BACKGROUND: Accumulation of mucus into the lungs in bronchiectasis lowers the patients' quality of life. Hypertonic aerosols stimulate the removal of mucus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 37 bronchiectasis patients without cystic fibrosis inhaled 4 ml of a 6 per cent saline solution twice a day for three months. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to establish an animal model of laryngeal burn and to investigate the temperature distribution of heated air in the upper airway.
METHODS: The animal model was established by inhalation of dry heated air at 80, 160 and 320 °C in 18 healthy, male, adult hybrid dogs. Time for inducing injury was set at 20 min. We describe a patient with occupational asthma induced by the inhalation of samba (Triplochiton scleroxylon) wood dust. To elucidate whether deep inhalation (DI) modulates changes in airway caliber in childhood, we measured the effect of DI on respiratory impedance before and after inhaled methacholine or salbutamol in 4- to 7-yr-old children (n = 15) suffering from recurrent wheezing.
