Acute cocaine reduces renin secretion. To determine a peripheral versus central site of action, intracerebroventricular (ICV) versus intraperitoneal (IP) injections of cocaine were compared. Cocaine was more potent reducing plasma renin activity (PRA) and concentration (PRC) when injected ICV (0.050 mg/kg) than IP (5 mg/kg), suggesting a central site of action. This articles presents a rare case of accidental insertion of an intravascular catheter into an artery by an experienced nurse (RN). Due to the patient's hypotension, this faulty positioning was misdiagnosed and a potential peripheral ischemic necrosis was, fortunately, avoided only because the anesthesia drug injection was performed through another vein. Clinical signs were also present but were also underestimated. After intra-arterial confirmation of the incorrect position, the catheter was subsequently removed. No further complications were observed.

Report of two patients with severe loss of visual acuity after surgery in the head and neck area. Ophthalmic examination and imaging studies demonstrate an occlusion of the ophthalmic and central retinal arteries. In both cases, the underlying physiopathology is the embolisation by an intra-operatively injected substance. Embolisation is thought to occur via anastomosing branches between the external and internal carotid arteries. These cases demonstrate that surgery in head and neck area can result in unexpected and devastating ocular complications.

35 patients with acute arterial occlusions [27] and graft thromboses [8], responsible for severe and recent ischemia, were treated by fibrinolytic therapy (Urokinase: 1 000 units/kg/hour, and Lys Plasminogen). Cosmetic facial filler-related central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a devastating complication of facial hyaluronic acid (HA) injection and can be managed by intra-arterial thrombolytic therapy (IATT). The effects of crude blue-ringed octopus venom gland extract and tetrodotoxin (TTX) on anaesthetised rats and rabbits were studied. Paralysis of the respiratory musculature causing anoxia and cyanosis was overcome with positive, artificial respiration. The second lethal mechanism of the toxins: rapid and severe hypotension, had to be counteracted peripherally, since neural transmission had been drastically reduced by the toxins.
