Field evaluation of commercial off-the-shelf spatial repellents against the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes Albopictus (Skuse), and the potential for use during deployment.

The Testing and Evaluation Department of the US Navy Entomology Center of Excellence (NECE), Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, is dedicated to the evaluation of novel equipment and vector control techniques to provide guidance on effective protection measures against human pathogens transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods. Personal protective measures (PPM), to include repellents, are part of a series of techniques that contribute toward reducing human-vector contact for globally and domestically deployed military forces. However, improper PPM use and limited availability has created v

Draw inspiration from research on the insecticidal, irritant and mosquito-repellent properties of plants used by chimpanzees to build their nests.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases are still responsible for the deaths of one million people worldwide every year, particularly in African countries. Plans to combat this worldwide burden, including strategies to control vectors, are still being investigated. Among them, the behavior of chimpanzees, our closest relatives living in African forests, has been studied. In Kibale National Park in Uganda, chimpanzees ingest plants that are biologically active against Plasmodium falciparum responsible for malaria but also select tree species to build their nests. The essential oils extracted from the

Cellulose Hydrogels Containing Geraniol and Icaridin Encapsulated in Zein Nanoparticles for Arbovirus Control.

The most important arboviruses are those that cause dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika, for which the main vector is the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The use of repellents is an important way to combat mosquito-borne pathogens. In this work, a safe method of protection employing a repellent was developed based on a slow release system composed of zein nanoparticles containing the active agents icaridin and geraniol incorporated in a cellulose gel matrix. Analyses were performed to characterize the nanoparticles and the gel formulation. The nanoparticles containing the repellents presented

Arthropod repellency, especially tick (Ixodes ricinus), exerted by extract from Artemisia abrotanum and essential oil from flowers of Dianthus caryophyllum.

A toluene extract of southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum) and the essential oil from flowers of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllum ) exerted pronounced a repellent effect both against ticks (nymphs of Ixodes ricinus) and yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti). The most potent repellents found were coumarin and thujyl alcohol from A. abrotanum and phenylethanol from D. caryophyllum where coumarin and thujyl alcohol were also detected.

Laboratory and field trial of developing medicinal local Thai plant products against four species of mosquito vectors.

Oils of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) and Zanthoxylum limonella (makaen), widely used essential oils for dental caries or flavoring of food in Thailand, were prepared as 10 experimental repellent products in gel or cream form against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles dirus under laboratory conditions, using the human-arm-in-cage method. Two products that gave the longest-lasting complete protection were selected to examine their repellency against a variety of mosquito species under field conditions. In laboratory tests, 0.1 g of each product was applied to 3x10 cm of exposed

Behavioral Responses of the Bumblebee Bombus terrestris to Volatile Compounds from Blueberries.

Bumblebees are important pollinating insects in crop pollination. Chemical attractants can effectively improve the flower-visiting efficiency of bumblebees, thereby increasing blueberry yields. To identify volatile compounds that attract bumblebees, we collected volatile compounds from blueberry flowers using headspace extraction. Gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified 32 volatile compounds, with Linalool and Styrene being the primary substances that accounted for 25.93% and 14.28%, respectively. The olfactory threshold of bumblebee antennae was assessed using electroantennog

Infectious Disease: Mosquito-Borne Viral Illnesses.

Due to rapid globalization and ease of travel, mosquito-borne viral infections are now a concern for family physicians throughout the United States. Zika virus infection is one such concern. It is spread via mosquito bites or by sexual contact with an infected individual. Most patients are asymptomatic, and when symptoms occur, they are mild and nonspecific. The main concern is the potential of the infection to cause fetal anomalies. Dengue is another mosquito-borne viral infection. Symptoms of initial infection are mild, and may include arthralgias. Subsequent infection with a different serot

Semiochemicals and odorant receptors underlying potato cultivar susceptibility and resistance to potato tuber moth.

Infestation of potato by the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella) varies markedly among cultivars, yet the chemical and molecular mechanisms underlying this variation remain poorly understood. Here, we combine field surveys, chemical ecology, functional genomics, and structural modeling to reveal how cultivar-specific volatile profiles shape moth oviposition behavior and pest outcomes. Field and laboratory assays identified marked differences in adult attraction, oviposition, and larval damage among potato cultivars, which correlated with distinct blends of emitted volatile organic comp

An odorant receptor from the southern house mosquito Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus sensitive to oviposition attractants.

BACKGROUND: Insect odorant receptors (ORs) are heteromers comprised of highly variable odorant-binding subunits associated with one conserved co-receptor. They are potential molecular targets for the development of novel mosquito attractants and repellents. ORs have been identified in the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, and in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. However, they are still unknown in the Southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, which transmits pathogens that cause human diseases throughout the world, including West Nile Virus in the United States. METHODOLOGY:

The potential use of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) as a prophylactic agent in the control of schistosomiasis.

DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is one of the reliable and most widely used insect repellents. This work was planned to study the effect of DEET on Schistosoma mansoni cercariae viability (in vitro) and skin penetration and migration (in vivo). DEET concentrations of 30%, 15% and 7.5% were highly efficient in killing all cercariae in vitro within 30, 60 and 240 minutes respectively. Two concentrations of DEET (15%) and (7.5%) were tested separately for their antipenetrant and protective effects in mice by immersing their tails in the drug and then exposed to cercariae, 30 minutes later. DEET a…

The Botfly, A Tropical Menace: A Distinctive Myiasis Caused by Dermatobia hominis.

Dermatobia hominis, also known as the human botfly, is native to tropical and subtropical Central and South America and seen in travelers from endemic to temperate regions including the United States and Europe. Cutaneous infestation botfly myiasis involves the development of D. hominis larvae in the skin and is common in tropical locations. The distinct appearance of a cutaneous D. hominis infestation facilitates early diagnosis and intervention where cases are common. However, the identification of D. hominis in temperate regions may prove challenging due to its rarity. D. hominis may be mis
