Knowledge of vector species composition and monitoring their change over time is critical to evaluate malaria transmission and assess control interventions. This is especially important in countries such as Botswana, where malaria transmission is subjected to fluctuations due to climate variability. Another important aspect that impacts vector populations is the insecticide resistance. In order to assess species composition and the presence of mutations associated with insecticide resistance, Anopheles specimens from larval samplings and indoor pyrethrum spray sheet collections were analysed. …

BACKGROUND: Treatment of head lice infestation relies on the application of topical insecticides. Overuse of these products has led to the e … failure in prospective studies.
CONCLUSION: The high occurrence of kdr mutant allele suggests that insecticide resistance was already strongly established in the studied population. This finding must be interpreted with caution as it may not be predictive of treatment failure.

BACKGROUND: Phthorimaea absoluta is one of the most devastating pests of tomato crops worldwide, with its control relying heavily on chemical insecticides. Assessing the risk of control failure and resistance levels is critical for evaluating insecticide efficacy. The globally adopted bioassay protocol is Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) method 022 (IRAC 022), which estimates mortality after a 3-day exposure. However, this short-term method may underestimate the effectiveness of slow-acting insecticides. Recently, the insecticides azadirachtin and spirotetramat were evaluated usi…

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is an important vector of chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. Vector control remains an important means for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases. The development of insecticide resistance has become a serious threat to the efficacy of insecticide-based control programs. To understand the resistance status and the underlying genetic mechanism in mosquitoes in Guangyuan City of Sichuan Province, China, we investigated the susceptibility of Ae. albopictus to four commonly used insecticides. We found that all the examined …

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used in many countries for chemical-based control of Ae. aegypti. Regardless of their efficacy, the constant use of insecticides has induced insecticide resistance mechanisms, such as knockdown resistance (kdr) in mosquitoes. Sri Lankan Vector Controlling Entities (VCE) have been using a variety of pyrethroid insecticides as the primary approach for dengue control. However, development of any resistance among the Aedes mosquitoes has been limitedly studied in the country. Therefore, the current study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of F15…

Increasing insecticide resistance in malaria vectors threatens the efficacy of current control tools, however knowledge of metabolic and cuticular mechanisms is widely lacking in Ghana. We examined the metabolic and cuticular resistance mechanisms in Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes from coastal and sahel zones of Ghana. WHO susceptibility tests and synergist assays were performed on F0 field collected An. gambiae s.l. Gene expression profiles of eight key metabolic and cuticular genes were determined using qRT-PCR. Moderate to high pyrethroid resistance (< 70%) were observed across all the sites.…

Insecticide resistance in malaria vectors threatens control efforts. Anopheles funestus Giles s.l. increasingly contributes to malaria transmission in Côte d'Ivoire especially in central and western regions, yet resistance data remain poorly known. This study assessed the susceptibility of An. funestus s.s. from Toumbokro to major insecticides and identified underlying metabolic resistance mechanisms. Blood-fed An. funestus s.l. females were collected indoors with an electric aspirator and induced to oviposit. F1 progeny from PCR-confirmed An. funestus s.s. were exposed to permethrin (0.75%), …

Aedes aegypti Linnaeus 1762 (Diptera: Culicidae) is the primary vector of several pathogens of public health significance. Insecticide-based preventative measures are a key component of vector-borne disease control programmes. However, widespread insecticide resistance threatens the effectiveness of current control strategies. Sarolaner, an isoxazoline insecticide, offers a novel mode of action and is primarily used for controlling ticks, fleas and mites in companion animals. This study evaluates the insecticidal efficacy of sarolaner against both laboratory-susceptible and resistant strains o…

Although pesticides have been a constant concern for decades, in the last ten years, public discussions and scientific research have emphasized their impact on human health and the environment, drawing increased attention to the problems associated with their use. The association of environmental stressors such as pesticides with a sugar-rich diet can contribute to the growing global metabolic disease epidemic through overlapping mechanisms of insulin resistance, inflammation, and metabolic dysregulation. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the behavioral effects of the exposure of Silv

The house fly, Musca domestica L., is a cosmopolitan insect with the ability to develop resistance to insecticides used for their management. In the present study, we investigated the genetics of spinosad resistance, and cross-resistance potential to other insecticides by selecting a field strain with a commercial spinosad formulation. Bioassays with the field strain, before selection with spinosad, gave resistance ratios (RRs) of 4, 5, 66, 21 and 5 fold for spinosad, indoxacarb, abamectin, imidacloprid and deltamethrin, respectively, in comparison to a laboratory susceptible (Lab-susceptible)

Carboxylesterases (CarEs) are critical enzymes involved in insecticide resistance, yet their specific roles in pyrethroid resistance of Aphis spiraecola remain unclear. In this study, enzymatic activity and synergism bioassays initially implicated CarE involvement in lambda-cyhalothrin resistance of A. spiraecola. RT-qPCR revealed that AsCarE13 and AsCarE15 were significantly upregulated in the lambda-cyhalothrin resistant strain (LC-R), with predominant expression in the gut and hemolymph, and marked inducibility upon insecticide exposure. RNAi of AsCarE13 and AsCarE15 significantly increased…

Insecticides are valuable and widely used tools for the control of insect pests. However, we know very little about the genes and processes involved in the key steps of the poisoning sequence. Besides, the excessive and indiscriminate use of insecticides is generating mechanisms of resistance in various insect pests. To improve our understanding of insecticide toxicity, we need a powerful model organism to help describe the processes underlying insecticide poisoning and the use of genomic tools to identify and analyze the genetic basis of the toxicological response of the insecticides. In this

Pest insect species are a burden to humans as they destroy crops and serve as vectors for a wide range of diseases including malaria and dengue. Chemical insecticides are currently the dominant approach for combating these pests. However, the de-registration of key classes of chemical insecticides due to their perceived ecological and human health risks in combination with the development of insecticide resistance in many pest insect populations has created an urgent need for improved methods of insect pest control. The venoms of arthropod predators such as spiders and scorpions are a promisin…

Despite significant progress in malaria control over the past two decades, the disease remains a major challenge. This review explores novel mosquito-targeting and transmission-blocking solutions to combat the growing concerns of antimalarial and insecticide resistance. The emergence of drug-resistant Plasmodium spp. parasites and insecticide-resistant mosquitoes, coupled with changes in vector behaviour and the spread of invasive species, necessitates the development of new control strategies. We examine a range of approaches ranging from low-tech repurposing of existing technologies to high-…

Mosquitoes are a major threat to human health globally because they transmit infectious diseases, such as malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and arboviruses. The conventional mosquito control efforts, based on synthetic insecticides, have been compromised owing to the eventual development of insecticide resistance and the adverse environmental impacts of insecticides. Alternative eco-friendly approaches using entomopathogenic fungi to alleviate vector-borne disease burden have gained an increasing interest because of their selective specificity and environmental safety. Existing literature reveale…

The invasive tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a very destructive pest that poses a major threat to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), causing extensive yield losses through larval feeding on leaves, stems, and fruits. Chemical insecticides remain the primary control method, but resistance development, biodiversity loss and environmental concerns necessitate alternative strategies. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of synthetic and botanical insecticides against T. absoluta during two consecutive cropping seasons 2023-20
