BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In dermatology, interferon Alfa 2 is used in adjuvant therapy of melanoma (stage IIa/b) as well as in treatment of cutaneous lymphoma or melanoma (stage III or higher). In the past 2 years, several case reports have described interferon-induced ocular side effects, including sudden loss of vision and ischemic retinopathy. We wondered if incidence and prognosis of ocular complications were elevated in patients receiving an adjuvant treatment of melanoma with interferons.

A 59-year-old woman with chronic active hepatitis C was treated with recombinant human interferon alpha-2a. After three days of administration, the patient complained of diplopia with dizziness and head heaviness. Ophthalmic examinations revealed a disturbance of the movement of left eye ball to the outer side without any other neurological signs. We report a case of poorly differentiated carcinoma of the prostate with lymph node metastasis in a 19-year-old male. He was managed with bilateral orchiectomy, flutamide and recombinant interferon alfa-2b therapy. He showed subjective improvement for 2 months. We report the disease characteristics and therapeutic results for 25 patients suffering from essential thrombocythaemia (ET), treated with recombinant interferon-alpha-2b (IFN-alpha 2b). ET was diagnosed according to the criteria of the Polycythaemia Vera Study Group. All patients were programmed to receive a subcutaneous induction treatment consisting of 3 MU of IFN-alpha 2b daily for 6 months. Cold agglutinin disease is an immunohemolytic anemia in which the autoantibody directly agglutinates human red blood cells below body temperature, maximally at 0 to 5 degrees C. Acquired von Willebrand's disease in a 40-year-old woman affected with essential thrombocythemia (ET) is reported. The profile of plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) revealed decreased ristocetin cofactor activity and diminished large multimers of vWF in spite of a normal vWF antigen level. There was no evidence of circulating inhibitor against the factor VIII complex. The vWF abnormality improved by controlling the platelet count following treatment for ET with interferon-alpha 2b and ranimustine. The possible mechanism of the development of AvWD in ET is briefly discussed.

Treatments for chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients intolerant to pegylated interferons (peg-IFNs) are lacking.
