BACKGROUND: Nasal polyposis (NP) is frequently associated with asthma. In this disease, asymptomatic bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) is thought to precede the development of asthma. IL-9 and its receptor have been reported as candidate genes for asthma and to be associated with BHR.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the contribution of 11-9 to the pathogenesis of BHR in NP by comparing the expression of IL-9 and its receptor in bronchial biopsy specimens from three groups of patients with NP: NP without BHR, NP with asymptomatic BHR, and NP with BHR and asthma.

CME: Mepolizumab, an Additional Therapeutic Agent for Severe Asthma Abstract. The challenging therapy of severe uncontrollable bronchial asthma aims primarily at sufficient symptom control and the minimization of the exacerbation rate. If, despite extended drug therapy, symptom control is very difficult to achieve, biologics should preferably be used instead of corticosteroid therapy. The aim of this article is to point out these different asthma therapy pathways and to describe diagnostic criteria as well as practical experiences through application in patients.

Preliminary results of IL-5 levels in homogenates derived from nasal polyps tissue are presented. The IL-5 concentration was assessed by immunoenzymatic method (ELISA, R&D, Systems Minneapolis). 26 patients at age 21-60 years were examined. IL-5 cevels were higher in polips with allergic and were examined. IL-5 levels were higher in polips with allergic and aspirin idiocracy background compared with inflammatory polips. In addition, IL-5 levels were increased in recurrent polips.
