Borderline personality disorder (BPD) was introduced in the DSM-III in 1980. From the DSM-III to the DSM-5, no major changes have occurred in its defining criteria. The disorder is characterized by instability of self-image, interpersonal relationships and affects. Further symptoms include impulsivity, intense anger, feelings of emptiness, strong abandonment fears, suicidal or self-mutilation behavior, and transient stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms. There is evidence that BPD can be reliably diagnosed and differentiated from other mental disorders by semi-struct

A report has been given how patterns of diagnostic contributed by a Balint group led to a better understanding of patients afflicted with perioral dermatitis. The interaction between internalized and unconscious conflicts and specific, actual conflict situations has been elucidated. Various factors of individual biography and contemporary history were seen to play concurrent roles. In agreement with the results of psychological testing, certain personality attributes were observed, which manifested themselves in two types, i.e. a rather passive and a more active one. This is important for the

Despite substantial efforts to counter sexual assault and harassment in the military, both remain persistent in the Armed Services. In February 2021, President Biden directed the U.S. Department of Defense to establish a 90-day Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military (IRC) to assess the department's efforts and make actionable recommendations. As servicemembers discharge from the military, effects of military sexual trauma (MST) are often seen in the Veterans Health Administration (VA). In response to an IRC inquiry about VA MST research, we organized an overview on pre

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition characterized by instability in identity, relationships, and affect. Individuals, with BPD typically lack a coherent sense of self, are highly sensitive to interpersonal stressors, experience intense fluctuations in mood, and frequently engage in impulsive and self-destructive behaviors. Although both empirical research and development of effective psychotherapy have evidently progressed over the past years, many aspects regarding the structure of experience and the life-world typical for persons with BPD are not yet fully

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading cause of disability among adolescents, with the burden disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where access to mental health care is limited. Interpersonal therapy (IPT), a structured psychological intervention, has shown promise in treating adolescent depression but there is limited evidence from LMICs and research on how it works and in which contexts it works best. This protocol describes a realist cluster-randomised controlled trial (cRCT) assessing the effectiveness, cost-utility and mechanisms of school-based group IPT for

UNLABELLED: Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) has a striking impact on the somatopsychic balance of patients and their families, including physical, psychological, and interpersonal problems. The aim of this systematic literature review was to investigate what psychological interventions are offered to patients with MM and their caregivers worldwide.
METHODS: The review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The literature search led to the identification of 12 articles. Results were categorized into five categories. 1. Individual psychological s

In summary, depressed patients with a history of childhood trauma may have a distinct depression endophenotype characterized by a specific neurobiology and risk genotype that may be responsive to different treatment strategies than depressed patients without childhood adversity. Based on current findings, treatment strategies should be multimodal and include the following: 1. Psychotherapy that addresses a number of domains, such as emotional regulation, cognitive reframing, careful exploration of past traumatic events, attachment, and interpersonal relationships in a safe and trusting therape

The aims of this study were: to develop a measure to examine the relationship between socially driven eating and specific eating behaviours; to examine whether different social situations increase or decrease eating in different diagnostic groups; and to determine whether dimensional links exist between responses to social triggers and different aspects of eating pathology. A clinical group of 107 eating-disordered women and 143 nonclinical women completed a measure of socially driven eating and restriction (the Social Eating Scale, or SES) and the Eating Disorders Inventory. The SES had good

Binge eating disorder (BED) is a new proposed eating disorder in the DSM-IV. BED is not a formal diagnosis within the DSM-IV, but in day-to-day clinical practice the diagnosis seems to be generally accepted. People with the BED-syndrome have binge eating episodes as do subjects with bulimia nervosa, but unlike the latter they do not engage in compensatory behaviours. Although the diagnosis BED was created with the obese in mind, obesity is not a criterion. This paper gives an overview of its epidemiology, characteristics, aetiology, criteria, course and treatment. BED seems to be highly preval

Clients suffering from the fasting and gorging syndromes of anorexia and bulimia nervosa are at significant risk of self-harm even if treated with apparent success in hospital. Two major issues (not inevitably co-existing) appear to be at work in these illnesses; distorted perception by the sufferer of his or her own body appearance and stressful interpersonal relationships originating in one of a variety of groups of which the sufferer is a member. (Fear of psychosexual maturity, that is, the clients' inability to develop an age-appropriate sexual identity, is treated in this paper as being t

UNLABELLED: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by excessive preoccupation with a slight or imagined defect in one's physical appearance, believing they look ugly, abnormal or deformed. While the most common preoccupations focus on the skin, hair and nose, any part of the body may be involved. Preoccupations are intrusive, time-consuming and hard to control. Repetitive behaviors are performed in response to the preoccupations. BDD is associated with marked impairment in socio-professional functioning, poor quality of life and high suicide rates.
CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS: BDD appea

OBJECTIVES: Depression in older patients contributes to personal suffering and family disruption and increases disability, medical morbidity, mortality, suicide risk, and healthcare utilization. The majority of clinical trials of antidepressant treatments are conducted in younger patients. For this reason, clinicians often have to extrapolate from studies in populations that do not present the same problems as older patients. For example, older patients often have serious coexisting medical conditions that may contribute to the depression and complicate the choice of treatment. Older patients

BACKGROUND: Role-playing has been employed across diverse psychotherapeutic traditions, yet no comprehensive synthesis has examined contemporary applications with adult populations and analyzed which theoretical orientations have reported beneficial or positive outcomes and under what implementation modalities.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review with narrative synthesis aimed to summarize empirical evidence (2015-2025) on the use of role-playing in adult psychotherapy, examining implementation patterns (clinical populations, design and duration, descriptions of role-playing procedures), therap

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders are complex mental disorders characterized by interpersonal difficulties and are notoriously difficult to treat. Inpatient treatment offers patients the opportunity to establish therapeutic alliances, which can help alleviate their clinical dilemmas. However, there is currently a lack of research that takes the perspective of inpatients as the main subject. This study aims to delve into the significant events experienced by inpatients with personality disorders from their own perspective and explore their significance and impact on the individuals.

Although descriptive psychopathology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is well-established, this disorder still presents very enigmatic and puzzling aspects. Hence the usefulness for further contributions to better clarify the picture. For example, one of the most problematic manifestations of OCD consists in pathological doubt, whose origin, however, remains unclear. For this purpose, a psychopathological analysis of several cases of OCD, in which decisional uncertainty is involved, is conducted, as well as a rereading of a famous case by Freud. As a result, the existence of a new psycho

Progress in understanding borderline personality disorder has unfolded in the last decade, landing in a new COVID-19-influenced world. Borderline personality disorder is now firmly established as a valid diagnosis, distinct from its co-occurring mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and behavioral disorders. Further, it is also understood as a reflection of general personality dysfunction, capturing essential features shared among all personality disorders. Neuroimaging research, representing the vast neurobiological advances made in the last decade, illustrates that the disorder shares frontolimbic
