Iron deficiency, the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, has negative effects on work capacity and on motor and mental development in infants, children, and adolescents, and maternal iron deficiency anemia might cause low birthweight and preterm delivery. Although iron deficiency is more common in developing countries, a significant prevalence was observed in the United States during the early 1990s among certain populations, such as toddlers and females of childbearing age. One of the national health objectives for 2010 is to reduce iron deficiency in these vulnerable populations by

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common form of anaemia world-wide. IDA is the simple result of an imbalance between iron loss and absorption. Gastric function with hydrochloric and ascorbic acid is essential for iron absorption. Some strains of Helicobacter pylori are able to acquire iron, competing with the host. A large percentage of patients with atrophic body gastritis (ABG) develop IDA and 61% of them are H. pylori positive. Recent evidence suggests that H. pylori infection could cause IDA in the absence of peptic ulcer or other upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding lesions

Menetrier's disease (MD) or polyadenomes en nappe is a form of hypertrophic gastropathy occurring primarily in middle-aged males. Patients generally present clinically with dyspepsia and, on occasion, with hypoproteinemic edema and anemia. The latter feature, when combined with the radiographic appearance of the stomach in MD, can lend to confusion with carcinoma and malignant lymphoma. To illustrate this diagnostic problem, a case is reported of a 41-year-old female who initially presented to her family physician with symptoms of easy fatigue and dyspnea on exertion and signs of pallor and an

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in late infancy. In healthy term infants iron stores are depleted at the age of four to six months and the infant becomes increasingly dependent on exogenous sources of iron. Furthermore, the iron content and bioavailability in a traditional weaning diet are low. The consequences of iron deficiency in late infancy span from pallor to risk of impaired psychomotor development. Approaches to prevent iron deficiency and problems associated with these approaches are reviewed, and general guidelines for a weaning diet as well as guidelines wi

Iron deficiency anemia is nowadays the world most prevalent nutritional problem. Several studies concerning anemia prevalence were carried out in Brazil with pregnant women and children aged less than 5 years, restricted mainly to northeast and southeast regions of the country. More recently, groups other than those of pregnant women and children aged less than 5 years, such as school children and adolescents, have become the target of those concerned with the issue. The differences found out among the groups and the diversity of methodologies employed, prevent us from reaching an evolutionary

The hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale infect approximately 1 billion people worldwide. The prevalence of hookworm infection increases with age in children, typically reaching a plateau in late adolescence, whereas the intensity of infection may continue to increase throughout adulthood. Hookworms cause intestinal blood loss in amounts proportional to the number of adult worms in the gut. The relationship between hookworm infection intensity and hemoglobin concentration is evident in epidemiologic studies, but may be apparent only above a threshold worm burden that is relat

Iron is an essential nutrient, and disorders of iron metabolism are common. Nonetheless, intestinal iron absorption and cellular iron transport are poorly understood. Biochemical approaches to elucidating these processes have yielded little in the past decade. As an alternative approach, we have begun to study spontaneous mouse mutants, that have inherited defects in key steps in iron transport. We have undertaken positional cloning of the gene responsible for microcytic anemia (gene symbol mk). This report describes the important characteristics of these mice, and our progress in studying the

To determine the effect of iron status on the seizure threshold, measures of iron sufficiency were prospectively evaluated in 51 children presenting to a pediatric emergency department with a febrile illness with (26) or without (25) an associated febrile seizure. A higher proportion of children from the febrile seizure group had a family history of mental retardation (5/26 versus 0/25, P = .02) or of previous febrile seizures (10/26 versus 2/23, P = .01). The two groups were otherwise comparable for age, sex, race, family history of afebrile seizures, temperature at presentation, white blood

Dietary cells and the vitamins B12 and folate are necessary for the production of the red blood cells (erythrocytes), which carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide from tissues to lungs. Deficiency of either one results in anaemia, which is characterised by low haemoglobin concentration. Symptoms result from reduced tissue oxygenation and include weakness, lethargy, palpitation, headache and shortness of breath. The first-time laboratory test of all patients suspected of being anaemic is the full blood count. Results of a full blood count may suggest the anaemia is caused

Since 1980 investigations, by this group, of patients with iron deficiency anaemia and no obvious cause, have been limited to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, with small bowel biopsy, and barium enema. This study attempted to follow up 93 consecutive patients whose anaemia remained obscure after these investigations to determine the outcome and assess the safety of this limited approach. In 1991/92 questionnaires were sent to the general practitioners. Eighty three completed questionnaires were received. Ten patients had died all unrelated to the iron deficiency anaemia. The mean follow up of

Plummer-Vinson syndrome is a clinical entity associated with dysphagia, sideropenic anemia and atrophic glossitis. Using rabbits with iron deficiency anemia, the author investigated the cause of dysphagia in this syndrome. Iron deficient animals were produced by bolus feeding without iron and intramuscular injection of an iron-chelating agent. The fibers of swallowing muscles (the thyro-pharyngeal, cricopharyngeal and cervicoesophageal muscles) were classified into three types (Type 1, 2A and 2B fibers) by actomyosin ATPase staining. No significant difference between the muscles of sideropenic

The hematological indices (Hb, Ht, MCHC) and iron status (serum iron, TIBC, LIBC, transferrin saturation), the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in 224 women aged 31 to 47 years, working in textile industry in Lódź were examined. Nutritional status was evaluated as follow: body height and weight, body mass index (BMI kg/m2) and body fat content (%) calculated from the four skinfolds sum. Anemia (Hb < 12 g/dl) was stated in 11.2% participating women, evident iron deficiency (Fes < 60 micrograms/dl, Sat % < 16) in 13.4% of population. The positive correlation was found among hematological ind

Iron is essential for human metabolism. Under normal circumstances its homeostasis is strictly kept by absorption and excretion through genitourinary, gastrointestinal tracts and skin losses. In several systemic disorders, dietary iron is insufficient to keep such a dynamic balance: development of iron deficiency may be due to increased requirements, decreased intestinal absorption, inadequate dietary uptake. Low birth weight newborns, children and adolescents are at increased risk for developing iron deficiency. Although clinical aspects may vary, hematochemical findings show a three-step gra

Three models were used to examine the requirement of bleomycin (Blm) for iron (Fe) to carry out its antitumor or cytotoxic activity. Mice were made iron deficient by dietary means. Animals with depressed iron stores in liver and low plasma and ascites fluid iron supported Ehrlich tumor growth as well as mice maintained on a control diet. Bleomycin was equally effective against this tumor in iron-deficient mice as it was against the tumor in iron-sufficient controls. Likewise, nutrient copper deficiency did not change the efficacy of the drug. Ehrlich cells in culture were treated with a non-gr

Providing with ascorbic acid, vitamins A and E, thiamine, riboflavin and pyridoxine was biochemically investigated in 108 children aged from 9 to 15 years. Significant disorders in the providing with all these vitamins were observed, the highest deficiency of ascorbic acid and pyridoxine being recorded. Vitamin deficiency in children was expressed as polyhypovitaminosis. Children with latent iron deficiency are less provided with vitamins than normal children, and the incidence of this or that vitamin deficiency in them is higher. The data obtained have evidenced that normalization of the body

39 pregnant women, hemoglobin in serum less than or equal to 6,80 mmol/l were treated with Vitaferro, Folicombin and additional vitamins. Test groups were formed by means of randomisation. Hematological and clinicochemical parameters were measured before, as well as 2 and 6 weeks after starting treatment and the results were evaluated.--In the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy serum iron concentration and iron-binding capacity are sufficient. The diagnosis is proved by an increase of the serum hemoglobin 2 weeks after starting therapy. For the total number of patients an increas

169 hospital inpatients were studied to assess the association of blue sclerae with iron-deficiency anaemia. Three observers independently graded the signs of blue sclerae and mucosal pallor as absent, equivocal, definite, or striking. Blue sclerae were seen more often in patients with iron-deficiency anaemia (40/46, 87%) than in those with other anaemias (2/28, 7%; p less than 0.001) or without anaemia (5/95, 5.3%; p less than 0.001). The specificity of blue sclerae in iron-deficiency anaemia was 0.94 with a sensitivity of 0.87. By comparison, mucosal pallor was noted in only 30% of patients

Studies of anaemia and tissue iron distribution were carried out in copper-deficient rats and pair-fed control animals given Fe orally or parenterally in varying doses. The anaemia of Cu deficiency was partially but incompletely corrected by oral Fe supplementation of one- to five-fold normal dietary levels or by intramuscular Fe supplementation. Serum Fe increased in Cu-deficient animals as the dose of supplemental Fe was increased. Hepatic Fe accumulation occurred in Cu-deficient rats which were administered with either oral Fe in two- to five-fold excess or low doses of intramuscular Fe. Th
