Laboratory and Molecular Diagnosis of Factor XI Deficiency.

The prevalence of factor XI (FXI) deficiency is 1 per 10 to 20,000 in the general population, much higher than that reported in most texts. The prevalence is higher in Ashkenazi Jews where it is about 1:20. Clinically, FXI deficiency presents as a mild bleeding disorder mostly associated with posttraumatic or postsurgical hemorrhages or unexplained minor bleeding. It is often discovered due to incidental finding of a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) on routine laboratory screening. FXI deficiency is an autosomal recessive bleeding disorder with many causative F11 gene def…

Disclosing the abuse: The effect of ethnoreligious identity on CSA disclosure in forensic interviews.

Multiple studies have examined sexually abused children and their interactions with the legal system, as manifested in children's disclosure … closure moderated the relationship between abuse characteristics and ethnoreligious identity (among Jews) and forensic disclosure. Conversely, it did not moderate the relationship between child characteristics and disclosure during the forensic interview. The findings demonstrate the importance of a context-informed examination of child abuse disclosur …

[Kaposi's sarcoma in Tainan: report of five cases].

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an uncommon cutaneous neoplasm with an increased incidence among Jews and Italians of Europe and North America and Negroes of equatory Africa. In recent years, several cases have been diagnosed in AIDS patients and in patients who have undergone organ transplantation or received immunosuppressant treatments. We have diagnosed five cases of KS over a 3-year period in our department. They include four men and one women, aged from 58 to 79 years, and who were born and had lived in Tainan. They all denied a history of homosexuality, multiple sexual partners, or drug abuse.…

Veno-occlusive disease and primary hepatic vein thrombosis in Israeli Arabs.

In a survey of nine major Israeli hospitals, 29 patients diagnosed between 1955 and 1975 as suffering from hepatic vein thrombosis were identified. Fifteen of the patients were Jews and 14 were Arabs. In contrast to the Jewish patients, all of whom were adults, the majority of the Arab patients were children below 10 years of age. Primary hepatic vein occlusion was 2.4 times more common among Arab than among Jewish patients. Of the 11 Arab patients with primary hepatic vein occlusion, three had histological changes typical of veno-occlusive disease; whereas in five others, thrombotic occlusion…

The eyes of the angel of death: Ophthalmic experiments of Josef Mengele.

The infamous Schutzstaffel doctor Josef Mengele was known as the Angel of Death for choosing and condemning Jews, gypsies, and other prisoners to the gas chambers at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Less known was his active participation in ophthalmic research with equal disregard for life and ethical principles. Mengele was not an ophthalmologist, but he worked in close collaboration and complicity with two genetic researchers at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, Karin Magnussen and Otmar Von Verschuer. The objective of the eye color protocol was to demonstrate hereditary dif…

Whole-Exome Sequencing Identifies a Novel Homozygous Frameshift Mutation in the MTMR2 Gene as a Causative Mutation in a Patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Type 4B1.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease refers to a heterogeneous group of axonal and demyelinating polyneuropathies, characterized by chronic motor and sensory dysfunction. CMT is the most common genetic cause of neuropathy. The present study aimed to identify the gene mutation responsible for CMT in Ashkenazi Jew (AJ) patient. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood leukocytes of affected family and normal subject. Whole-exome sequencing was performed using the Illumina HiSeq2500. The DNA region containing the identified mutation was amplified by PCR and sequenced using dye-terminator chemistry

Phenotypic heterogeneity in patients with Gaucher disease and the N370S/V394L genotype.

Correlation between genotype and phenotype in Gaucher disease is limited. It is known that the most common mutation N370S is protective of neurological involvement, but for the V394L mutation, described as the fifth most common among Ashkenazi Jews, little data are available. This study reports all known patients from a large referral clinic and from the international registry with Gaucher disease who are documented to have the N370S/V394L genotype. Of 476 patients in the Gaucher Clinic, 7 patients (2.0%) had the N370S/V394L genotype; of 2,836 patients in the registry, there were 14 patients (…

Inflammatory bowel disease in Cape Town, 1975-1980. Part II. Crohn's disease.

Patients with Crohn's disease seen in the Gastro-intestinal Clinic of Groote Schuur Hospital between 1975 and 1980 were studied to establish the incidence and clinical features of this disease. There were 117 patients and the mean (+/- SEM) follow-up was 6,1 +/- 0,5 years. Of these patients 72% were White, 37% Coloured and 1% Black. The incidence for the Coloured and White population groups was calculated to be 0,4 and 0,9/100 000 per year during 1970-1974 and 1,3 and 1,2/100 000 per year during 1975-1980 respectively. Exploring climate-related health risks and behaviors among vulnerable populations in the eastern Mediterranean: the cases of Jewish and Bedouin Negev desert residents.

INTRODUCTION: The Negev region of Israel is susceptible to the impact of climate change, and future predictions include an increase in the intensity, length, and frequency of extreme weather events. The Negev is also home to a variety of vulnerable communities characterized by low socioeconomic status and inadequate availability of infrastructure as well as inadequate access to healthcare services. In this article we explored climate-related risks and coping practices of Jewish and Bedouin members of vulnerable communities in the Negev. METHODS: The article draws from 10 focus groups (n = 69

Polio, public health memories and temporal dissonance of re-emerging infectious diseases in the global north.

Social science research on polio has been centred in the global south, where countries that remain endemic or vulnerable to outbreaks are located. However, closely-related strains of poliovirus were detected in the sewage systems of several New York State counties and London boroughs in 2022. These detections constituted the first encounters with polio in the United States and United Kingdom for a generation - for both public health agencies and publics alike. This paper takes the transnational spread of poliovirus in 2022 as an opportunity to critique how public health memories of twentieth-c

The Prevalence of Amblyopia and Eye Diseases among Pediatric Jewish Ethiopian Immigrants in Israel: An Observational Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: In developed countries, amblyopia has an estimated prevalence rate of 1-4%, depending on the socioeconomic gradient. Previous studies performed on pediatric populations in Ethiopia demonstrated amblyopia rates up to 16.7. OBJECTIVES: To assess rates of amblyopia, refractive errors, strabismus, and other eye pathologies among Ethiopian-born children and adolescents who immigrated to Israel compared to Israeli-born children. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study included children and adolescents 5-19 years of age who immigrated to Israel up to 2 years before data collec

Bullous pemphigoid and neurological disorders among a Jewish population.

A retrospective case control study included data regarding 65 Jewish bullous pemphigoid (BP) patients diagnosed in a tertiary medical center and a control group consisting of 182 matched Jewish patients. The study indicates that Jewish patients with BP suffer from a higher prevalence of neurological diseases compared to patients with no BP, similarly to previous reports showing high prevalence of neurological diseases among BP patients from different ethnic groups.

Ethical Issues with Genetic Testing for Tay-Sachs.

Several genetic disorders are specific to Jewish heritage; one of the most devastating is Tay-Sachs disease.Tay-Sachs is a fatal hereditary disease, causing progressive neurological problems for which there is no cure. Ethical issues surrounding genetic testing for Tay-Sachs within the Jewish community continue to be complex and multifaceted. A perspective of Tay-Sachs, using rights-based ethics and virtue ethics as a theoretical framework, is explored.

[Tefillin-related contact dermatitis].

We describe a 14 year-old male with a background of atopic dermatitis who developed a contact dermatitis reaction on the left arm to the leather straps of tefillin (phylacteries), a religious article worn by observant Jewish men from the age 13 years during most morning prayer services. Patch testing revealed contact allergy to potassium dichromate, a chemical involved in leather tanning. Placing the leather straps over clothing and later switching to potassium dichromate-free leather straps resolved the condition. It is important to recognize this uncommon phenomena in a population in which a

The frequency of Tay-Sachs disease causing mutations in the Brazilian Jewish population justifies a carrier screening program.

CONTEXT: Tay-Sachs disease is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by progressive neurologic degeneration, fatal in early childhood. In the Ashkenazi Jewish population the disease incidence is about 1 in every 3,500 newborns and the carrier frequency is 1 in every 29 individuals. Carrier screening programs for Tay-Sachs disease have reduced disease incidence by 90% in high-risk populations in several countries. The Brazilian Jewish population is estimated at 90,000 individuals. Currently, there is no screening program for Tay-Sachs disease in this population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate th
