Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the commonest nerve entrapment syndrome, is one of the most frequent occupational disorders related to manual work. Both occupational and personal risk factors make it difficult to recognize the true origin of its occurrence and to devise prevention strategies. Most of the information available about occupational CTS originates from cross-sectional studies on various job titles, where the prevalence of the disease has been reported to vary between 0.6% and 61%. Few longitudinal studies are available on occupational CTS. Consensus has been reached about the criteri

The quantitative exposure to vibration for shipyard workers who have used several kinds of vibratory tools was studied. The dose-response relationship between lifetime exposure dose and hand-arm vibration syndrome also was studied. The study included 344 workers who were exposed to vibration in one shipyard and 53 unexposed workers in the same company. Vibration measurements were made on several vibratory tools according to the international standard, ISO 5349. The actual exposure times for the vibratory tools were measured. Questionnaires for demographics, exposure to vibration, and confoundi

To clarify the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and the value of EBV antibody testing in evaluating patients with chronic fatigue, we studied 200 consecutive patients with chronic fatigue (mean duration, 9 years). Complete EBV serologic panels were obtained for 154 patients, 35 (23%) of whom met serologic or clinical criteria for chronic or reactivated EBV infection. We compared these patients with chronic EBV infection (CEBV cases) to 35 age- and sex-matched patients who were selected from the same cohort of fatigued patients but who did not meet the criteria (CEBV control subjects)

In a brief review of advances made in endocrinology during the past two years surprisingly the receptors for TSH and thyroid hormones occupy the foremost position. Mutations of the TSH receptor may cause congenital hyperthyroidism or resistance to TSH (mutation of the gene for TSH-receptor). An interaction of thyroid hormone receptor with a conserved transcriptional mediator was discovered. The reports on the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome with TRH are still controversial. CRH deficiency reveals neonatal but not adult glucocorticoid need--at least in mice. The concept of r

BACKGROUND: Burnout is one of the main examples of health disorders directly related to work. This is a psychological syndrome that results from exposure to stressors in the workplace and represents a considerable psychosocial problem.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of and factors associated with burnout among professors at public and private universities.
METHODS: We administered two self-report questionnaires-one for sociodemographic, psychosocial, occupational and health-related data, and the other based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey-to professors at four publi

BACKGROUND: Although multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a well-known disorder caused by environmental exposures, MCS caused by occupational exposure has been reported in Korea. Therefore, we report a MCS case caused by environmental exposure to ignition coal after a differential diagnosis to exclude other diseases.
CASE REPORT: Since 2011, a 55-year-old woman had experienced edema, myalgia, and other symptoms when she smelled ignition coal near her workplace. She had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome(FMS) and was treated, with no improvement of symptoms. Since then, she showed the

BACKGROUND: Linburg-Comstock anomaly is typically defined as a tenosynovial interconnection between flexor pollicis longus and flexor digitorum profundus tendon of the second finger. There are several studies stating that the current anomaly is congenital or acquired. The aim of this study is to reveal whether overuse, which is mostly reported as an acquired etiologic factor, effective in development of the current anomaly.
METHODS: Three hundred thirteen medical secretaries who work with computer keyboard at least 6 hours a day were defined as study group. Three hundred twenty-three voluntee

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic inflammatory, demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system in young adults. This disorder is a heterogeneous, multifactorial, immune-mediated disease that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. In most patients, reversible episodes of neurological dysfunction lasting several days or weeks characterize the initial stages of the disease (that is, clinically isolated syndrome and relapsing-remitting MS). Over time, irreversible clinical and cognitive deficits develop. A minority of patients have a pr

Few supported employment programmes have been specifically designed for people with autism, especially those who are more able. This study examines the outcome of a supported employment service (NAS Prospects) for adults with autism or Asperger syndrome (IQ 60+) over an 8 year period. Approximately 68 percent of clients found employment. Of the 192 jobs, the majority were permanent contracts and most involved administrative, technical or computing work. Assessment of current clients indicates that IQ, language skills and educational attainments are high. However, work has also been found for t

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a frequent phenomenon among recruits undergoing military training. The causes, however, are largely unknown, which makes it difficult for medical staff and military personnel to deal with the problem. A prospective 2-year follow-up study was performed in 58 recruits with patellofemoral pain that had started prior to or during basic military training. Anthropometric data and patient history were recorded, and a clinical examination of the knee joint was performed according to established criteria at the time of inclusion into the study. At follow-up investigation

A variety of factors have been considered as contributing to plantar talalgia pain syndromes. This study was designed to explore a series of possible contributors to the etiology of plantar talalgia (PT) specifically in nonathletes. The influence of body mass index (BMI), SCFP thickness and compressibility index, plantar and heel surface area, BMI/heel area ratio, heel-lifting device utilization, a standing job, heel malalignment, and a calcaneal spur (CS) over the risk of developing PT was analyzed by a case-control design. Eighty-five cases were compared with 58 controls of similar age and s

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has devastated global public health systems and economies, with over 52 million people infected, millions of jobs and businesses lost, and more than 1 million deaths recorded to date. Contact with surfaces contaminated with droplets generated by infected persons through exhaling, talking, coughing and sneezing is a major driver of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, with the virus being able to survive on surfaces for extended periods of time. To interrupt these chains of transmission, there is an urgent need for devices that can b

Cement is widely used in construction. Acute exposures with immediate sequelae have been infrequently described. This case report describes a man who developed multifocal pneumonitis with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDs) and respiratory failure one day after cement dust exposure. Chromium, cobalt, and nickel components in cement may cause pulmonary tissue irritation. Sand and gravel in cement may cause direct abrasive injury. Inhalation may cause direct thermal injury through an exothermic reaction. The silicon dioxide component has been shown to cause pulmonary injury through cytoki

Physical assessment of 146 female workers in highly repetitive jobs found 54% to have evidence of musculoskeletal disorders in the upper limb that are potentially work-related. Many workers had multiple problems, and many were affected bilaterally (33% of workers). Muscle pain and tenderness was the largest problem, both in the neck/shoulder area (31%) as expected and in the forearm/hand musculature (23%), a previously unreported site. Most forearm muscle problems were found on the extensor side. Carpal tunnel syndrome was the most common form of neuritis with 16 people affected (7 people affe

There are few published reports of adults with Williams syndrome (WS). We have evaluated ten adult WS patients. The patients in our study were very variable in clinical presentation, ranging from severely affected patients with complicated medical histories to mildly affected patients who are generally in good health. Cardiovascular anomalies and hypertension were frequent. Supravalvular aortic stenosis was seen in four patients, mitral valve prolapse in three, bicuspid aortic valve in one, valvular aortic stenosis in one, and pulmonary stenosis with right ventricular hypertrophy in one. In industrialised countries, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is considered an epidemic work-related disease. We have set up the MODS (Malattie Occupazionali Da Sovraccarico biomeccanico, biomechanical overload-related occupational diseases) collaborative group, formed by epidemiologists, ergonomists and occupational physicians to investigate CTS in Italy, applying the methods that epidemiologists commonly use to understand epidemics. Several studies are already ongoing. Two different descriptive studies based on current hospitalisation data are in the reporting phase. A pilot case-control multice
