This article challenges the distinction the law draws between male and female. It focuses on the legal and medical treatment of intersexual people. Analysing the nature and rate of intersexuality it argues that there is a significant number of people who cannot be described as either male or female and instead exhibit a range of sexual characteristics. This analysis is based on a follow-up study of 48 White male young adults who had been former youth multiple drug abuse patients in day-care treatment. For the most part, these respondents came from middle-class homes. As youthful offenders, many had been sent into treatment as an alternative to incarceration. Information provided by the three commercial manufacturers of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine, adsorbed (DTP vaccine) indicates a striking increase in the number of lawsuits filed against them alleging damage caused by the vaccine. Only one such case was filed in 1978, whereas 73 were filed in 1984. During the seven-year period from 1978 to 1984, the average amount claimed per suit has risen from $10 million to $46.5 million. If the current trend continues, suits will pose an increasing threat to the availability of DTP vaccines in the United States.

A family with Huntington's chorea was evaluated. The 65-year-old male proband had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. Because of Huntington's chorea in the family, he was considered "affected" by many of his relatives. Following his death, autopsy was refused by the patient's son, who had been his legal guardian. Legal consultation eventually led to autopsy, which showed no evidence of Huntington's chorea. Genetic counselling was provided for his children and siblings. Pertinent legal and neuropsychiatric issues in Huntington's disease are reviewed.

For more than a decade the roles of non-physicians in fertility regulation have been expanding. The article discusses the relationship between law and the expansion of those roles. Young victims of child sexual abuse can - for a range of developmental, motivational and contextual reasons - have difficulties disclosing their experiences. In the present study, corroborated court cases concerning 57 preschoolers' disclosures of sexual abuse were examined using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Together, the cases involved 53 girls and 4 boys between 2-6 years (M=4.2, SD=1.2) during the (first) incident of abuse.
