[Descemetocele after Excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy in herpes simplex virus-induced keratitis: a clinico-pathologic correlation].

BACKGROUND: The indications for phototherapeutic keratectomy in superficial and deep corneal scars in Herpes simplex virus infections are controversial. Serious incidents after PTK have as yet not been reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 62-year-old patient had suffered from recurrent central herpetic keratitis since 1948 and was treated for corneal scarring for the first time in 1992 by PTK. In 1995, epithelial defects were noted and, since medical treatment was unsuccessful, repeat PTK was performed. Two weeks after the second PTK, stromal infiltration with a subsequent corneal ulcer was foll…

METHODS: This retrospective observational study was included eyes undergoing mitomycin C (MMC)-assisted PRK for myopia (with or without astigmatism) were categorized as low (spherical equivalent [SE] > -3.0 D), moderate (- 6.0 D < SE ≤ - 3.0 D), and high myopia (SE ≤ -6.0 D). Refractive, tomographic, densitometric, and biomechanical parameters were analyzed preoperatively and at 1, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: 145 eyes …

Central Toxic Keratopathy after Photorefractive Keratectomy: Two-Year Follow-Up Case Report and Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of central toxic keratopathy (CTK) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: A 22-year-old male underwent bilateral PRK for the correction of myopic astigmatism. Preoperative refraction measurements were -2.50 -1.00 × 65 in the right eye and -3.50 diopter (D) sphere in the left eye. The intended refractive correction was -3.25 -1.00 × 65 (in the right eye) and -4.25 D sphere in the left eye. Preoperative corneal thickness measured 489 μm (in the right eye) and 491 μm in the left eye, both values exceeding the minimum safe threshold for PRK. RESULTS: At …

Cold bandage contact lens use reduces post-photorefractive keratectomy or corneal collagen-crosslinking pain perception in patients.

PURPOSE: To compare post-operative pain perception using bandage contact lens (BCL) stored at 2-8°C (Cold BCL, CL-BCL) or room temperature (23 - 25°C, RT-BCL) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or corneal collagen-crosslinking (CXL) and determine status of nociception associated factors. METHODS: In this prospective interventional study, 56 patients undergoing PRK for refractive correction and 100 keratoconus (KC) undergoing CXL were recruited following approval from the institutional ethics committee with informed consent.
