A 71-year-old woman diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus with severe iron deficiency anemia and positive fecal occult blood. Colonoscopy was performed, showing a soft mass in the ascending colon, with biopsies compatible with plasmacytoma and restriction for Kappa light chains. After bone marrow aspiration, associated IgG multiple myeloma was detected, so chemotherapy with VMP (bortezomib, melphalan and prednisone) was started. Colonoscopy six months later showed that the ulcerated lesion had a reduction in tumor size of up to 80%. A 27-year-old male with a history of kidney transplantatio

OBJECTIVE: Leiomyomata are benign neoplasms that are rarely encountered in the genitourinary tract outside the uterus. Pathological confirmation is always needed for definitive diagnosis, in order to rule out malignancies such as leiomyosarcoma. In cases of small leiomyomata, a surveillance strategy can be suggested, although the preferred approach is complete resection. Prognosis seems to be excellent, but available data are based on few, inconsistent series, as is often the case with rare neoplasms. This article presents long-term follow-up data from the most heterogeneous series, in terms o

An extremely aggressive malignant epithelial neoplasm of the kidney has recently been described and named renal medullary carcinoma. The finding of this tumor is highly predictive of drepanocytes (sickle cells) in tissue sections and thus the presence of sickle hemoglobin, specifically sickle cell trait, in the patient. We present a case report of this rare tumor in a 10-year-old male. The tumor displayed a variable histologic architecture including gland-like areas with intra- and extracytoplasmic material resembling mucin with hematoxylin and eosin stain. This material was negative with peri

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with in-hospital and outpatient survival of patients with different types of stage IV cancer who p … ale sex and neoplasms with a high risk of thrombosis (lung, pancreas, stomach, uterus, bladder, and kidney neoplasms).
CONCLUSION: Patients with stage IV cancer and acute VTE have short survival. Poor prognostic factors are thrombocytopenia, the ECOG score, and certain types of cancer. These results may help physicians individualize decisions regarding initiation …

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is often critical for distinction between metastatic carcinomas of Mullerian organ and breast origin. Paired box family protein 8 (PAX8) has been described as a transcription factor highly specific to neoplasms derived from Mullerian organs, thyroid, and kidney. PAX8 IHC with polyclonal and monoclonal antibody reagents was performed on 27 primary and 22 metastatic breast carcinomas. Eight of 27 primary breast carcinomas (30%) were positive for PAX8 with the monoclonal antibody reagent only; 0 of 22 were polyclonal anti-PAX8 immunoreactive. Substantial numbers of meta

AIM: Tumors related to hereditary susceptibility seem to have an immunosensitive phenotype.
MATERIALS & METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study, to investigate if family history of cancer, multiple neoplasms and early onset of cancer could be related to clinical outcomes of anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy. Activity and efficacy data of 211 advanced cancer patients (kidney, non-small-cell lung cancer, melanoma, urothelium, colorectal and HeN), treated at seven Italian centers with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 agents, were analyzed.
RESULTS: In this preliminary report at multivariate analyses, posi

BACKGROUND: Population-based data on the development of second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) following the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are uncommon. We evaluated this clinical vignette in HCC patients within the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database.
METHODS: The SEER database (1973-2012) was queried using the SEER*Stat program to determine the clinico-pathological features of HCC patients with more than one year survival who developed SMNs. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated to determine the risk of each type of subsequent cancers. Relative

Studies of pancreatic cancer in the setting of second primary malignant neoplasms can provide etiologic clues. An international multicenter study was carried out using data from 13 cancer registries with a registration period up to year 2000. Cancer patients were followed up from the initial cancer diagnosis, and the occurrence of second primary malignant neoplasms was compared with expected values derived from local rates, adjusting for age, sex, and period of diagnosis. Results from individual registries were pooled by use of a fixed-effects model. People were at higher risk of developing pa

Retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPSs) are rare findings that can grow into large masses without eliciting severe symptoms. At present, surgical resection is the only radical therapy, whenever it can be performed with the aim to achieve a complete removal of the tumor. The present report describes two consecutive cases of RPSs that resulted in dedifferentiated liposarcomas (DDLPSs) and these patients underwent R0 surgical resection with and without a nephron-sparing procedure. The diagnostic workup, the surgical approach, the impact of late surgical management due to the COVID pandemic and the latest

The kidney is an important target for mineralocorticoids. Aldosterone, the major endogenously secreted mineralocorticoid, acts by binding to mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in the distal renal tubule. The enzyme 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type II (11beta-HSD2) prevents the binding of glucocorticoids to the MR by inactivating cortisol to cortisone. Our goal was to determine whether MR and 11beta-HSD2 expression could be used to characterize the major types of renal cell neoplasms. Using immunohistochemistry we analyzed tissue microarray specimens from 132 patients with renal cell neopl

With the continuous advancement of diagnostic technologies, an increasing number of renal and renal vascular lesions are being detected. However, cases involving renal tumors concurrent with renal vascular lesions remain exceedingly rare, and there is currently no established consensus regarding their optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies. Renal tumors often necessitate radical nephrectomy, which typically precludes the preservation of the affected kidney. In this report, we present the case of a young female patient diagnosed with a right-sided renal tumor in conjunction with bilateral r

Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common clinical presentation, but they can sometimes be the key signpost to a hidden anatomical surprise. We report the case of a 55-year-old obese woman with a decade-long history of recurrent UTIs and pelvic fullness. Examination revealed a vague pelvic mass, suspicious for a gynecological neoplasm. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan definitively diagnosed an asymptomatic ectopic pelvic kidney, with an empty right renal fossa. The pelvic kidney was the likely anatomical predisposing factor for her recurrent UTIs, which were compl

A 63-year-old man presented with a pulsatile cutaneous horn on the nose and multiple angiomatous nodules on the gingiva and scalp, which appeared over 2 months. He had severe hypercalcaemia, lytic lesions in multiple bones and acute kidney injury. Excision biopsy from the gingival nodule showed a clear cell neoplasm. The bone marrow showed atypical cells with similar morphology. Imaging showed a 7 cmx7.5 cm mass at the upper pole of the left kidney with metastases to the bones, liver and lung. Immunohistochemistry was consistent with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Renal cell carcinoma presen

A solitary fibrous tumour is an unusual spindle cell neoplasm. It frequently arises from the serosal surface of pleural cavity but has recently been described in diverse extrapleural sites. Urogenital localization is rare and only 36 cases of solitary fibrous tumours of the kidney have been described on published report. We report a case of a large solitary fibrous tumour clinically and radiologically thought to be renal cell carcinoma arising in the kidney of a 30 year old female. The radical nephrectomy was performed. The tumour was a well- circumscribed, solid mass attached to the renal pel

Schwannomas are benign tumors that arise from neural sheath Schwann cells. Solitary benign schwannomas are generally located in the head and neck, often along the cranial nerves, and are a particularly rare neoplasm among tumors of the retroperitoneal space. A 67-year-old man undergoing a general health check was incidentally found to have a mass beside the left kidney. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a cystic adrenal mass located cephalad to the left kidney. Retroperitoneoscopic resection of the retroperitoneal mass was performed. The pathological diagnosis was retroperitoneal benign schwan

The results of B-mode ultrasound examinations in 113 consecutive patients with unilateral renal nonfunction or severe azotemia were reviewed. The causes of nonfunction included the following: hydronephrosis; renal parenchymal disease; renal agenesis; atrophy or dysplasia; multicystic, medullary cystic, and polycystic kidneys; renal arterial or venous occlusive disease; extensively infiltrating neoplasm. The sonographic findings were consistent with the final diagnosis in 92 percent of the cases. A coronal view of the kidney for diagnosing hydronephrosis is described. This view demonstrates the

OBJECTIVE: With the evolution of robot-assisted surgery in the urology field, this technology is being applied to treat many genitourinary conditions.1 Although incidence of urolithiasis and renal neoplasm has increased, encountering both entities in a single kidney is noteworthy. Our video exhibits the concurrent management of a renal calculus and an ipsilateral renal neoplasm using a robotic platform.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 53-year-old man was diagnosed with a 1.7-cm left renal pelvis calculus and a 4.7-cm enhancing ipsilateral upper pole renal mass (R.E.N.A.L score 8a) after an episode o

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic adrenal tissue in the kidney, including "Ectopic adrenal tissue" and "Adrenal-renal fusion", is a rare event with a specific behavior which may be difficult to distinguish clinically from renal neoplasms. We performed a systematic review on ectopic adrenal tissue variants reported in the literature underlining its clinical aspects.
METHODS: Manuscripts which presented a case report or case series of ectopic adrenal tissue in the kidney were included even if published in original articles, reviews, or letters to the editor. A specific search on SCOPUS®, PubMed®, and Web o

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the kidney is a rare indolent lymphoma characterized by the monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells outside the bone marrow. Owing to its special site of origin, it is highly prone to misdiagnosis in clinical practice. Herein, we report a case of primary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the kidney. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) of the patient revealed a left renal mass, and renal carcinoma was considered. After adequate preoperative preparation, the patient underwent a radical nephrectomy for renal carcinoma. Pathological and immunohistochemical
