Knee pathologies are commonly associated with muscle inhibition, an inability to fully activate the knee extensors during voluntary contractions. This inhibition results in knee extensor weakness, and is thought to limit the functional recovery of the knee joint structures. The possible contribution of persistent knee extensor inhibition to osteoarthritis is discussed.

Patients with spinal cord injury are predisposed to knee effusions owing to osteoporosis, heterotopic ossification, trauma, and benign hydrarthrosis. This retrospective review discusses 11 patients with spinal cord injury and knee effusions seen during two years. One objective is to correlate the initial diagnosis based on clinical findings with the final diagnosis based on synovial fluid analysis and radiographic studies. Another is to describe the variety and complexity of clinical situations that involve knee effusions in spinal cord injury. The initial diagnosis was different from the fina

OBJECTIVE: To detect evidence for localised changes in bone matrix metabolism after joint trauma and in post-traumatic osteoarthritis by quantification of bone sialoprotein in joint fluid and serum after knee injury in a cross sectional study.
METHODS: Samples of knee joint fluid and serum were obtained from volunteers with normal knees (n = 19), patients with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament isolated or combined with tear of a meniscus (n = 114), and patients with isolated meniscus lesions (n = 80). Concentrations of bone sialoprotein were determined by ELISA. Concentrations of othe

Bone mineral density (BMD) and clinical status of 42 patients treated surgically 10-11 years earlier for an acute knee ligament injury were determined. The BMD was measured at the spine (L2-4) and the femoral neck, distal femur, patella, proximal tibia, and calcaneus of both lower extremities using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometric (DXA) scanner. The relative BMD results of the injured knee were correlated with sex, age, activity level, knee stability, and functional scores of the patient. In the 11 patients with moderate injury (isolated rupture of the medial collateral ligament), the BMDs of

Between 1978 and 1984, we examined and performed arthroscopy on 1000 consecutive patients. Ninety-eight of the 1000 had isolated ACL damage. These cases do not include patients with initial ACL injuries combined with other intraarticular damage. Diagnosis was by physical and arthroscopic examination. Examination took place an average 13.6 months after injury. Of the 98 isolated ACL injuries, 56 were complete ruptures and 42 were partial ruptures. In most cases of partial rupture, the clinical diagnosis was wrong. "Meniscal damage" was the usual diagnosis in these cases; the true diagnosis was

We measured levels of cartilage proteoglycan (PG) fragments in knee joint synovial fluid obtained from patients with previous trauma of the knee, early gonarthrosis, or pyrophosphate synovitis, and in age-matched control subjects. During the initial 3-4 weeks after rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament or the meniscus (confirmed by arthroscopy), markedly increased PG fragment levels were found. At later times after trauma (up to 4 years), many of these patients still had significantly elevated levels of cartilage PG fragments in the joint fluid. In a group of older patients with gonarthros

Fracture dislocations or dislocations of the knee can produce an arterial injury that may be difficult to evaluate clinically. Aggressive diagnosis and treatment can produce satisfactory results in both vascular and orthopedic situations if performed early after the injury. Five cases of popliteal arterial injury were seen from April 1974 to August 1976. Three cases were following posterior knee dislocation, one was a femoral fracture displacement, and one was a rotary tibiofibular displacement. Four of the patients had complete popliteal artery transection and one had intramural hematoma and

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent during military training, with overuse knee injuries representing a major source of medical attention and time-loss. The early transition into military academy life is marked by considerable physical and psychological stressors, creating a high-risk window for injury development-particularly among individuals with an injury history. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop and internally validate a multivariable prediction model for overuse knee injuries among first-year military cadets with a history of knee injury.

INTRODUCTION: Medial Hoffa fractures are exceptionally rare, especially when associated with intra-articular knee injuries (anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, and meniscus tears). The discussed case highlights a single-stage fully arthroscopic fixation of a medial Hoffa fracture with associated ligament and meniscal injuries - representing a novel and effective, though challenging, treatment option. This is the first report of this kind in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old male patient presented 5 days after an injury to the left knee after a slip and fall in the…

BACKGROUND: It is important to understand the role of muscle activation in knee joint protection against the injuries, such as meniscus tear, cartilage wear, and ligament damage, often caused by muscle weakness, improper running posture, or overtraining. Research on the finite element knee model with muscles has not been reported yet, nor have there been any biomechanical explorations on the internal tissues of knee joint with muscle activation.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of muscle activation in jogging for the protection against knee joint injuries based on the stress fields of the

OBJECTIVE: A digital classification system based on AO classification was adopted to study and summarize different types of floating knee injuries.
METHODS: One hundred cases with a floating knee injury from March 2005 to December 2020 were collected, including 74 males and 26 females with an average age of 43.74 years. The distribution of the affected limbs in there were 51 cases (51.0%) on the left and 46 cases (46.0%) on the right, as well as 3 cases (3.0%) that got bilaterally affected limbs. The femora and tibiae in this system were divided into three parts separately based on the AO cla…

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the research progress of anterior cutaneous nerve injury and repair in knee arthroplasty.
METHODS: The relevant literature at home and abroad in recent years was reviewed and summarized from the anatomy of anterior cutaneous nerve, nerve injury grade, clinical manifestations, prevention and treatment of anterior cutaneous nerve.
RESULTS: The anterior cutaneous nerve injury is a common complication of knee arthroplasty. Because the anterior cutaneous nerve branches are many and thin, and mainly run between the first and second layers of fascia, this level is often igno

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Floating knee injury is a rare injury that involves a simultaneous fracture of the femur and tibia. It is more common among young men and is generally caused by high-speed blows. Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder associated with various musculoskeletal conditions. Children with Down syndrome have generalized ligamentous laxity, joint hypermobility, and hypotonia, leading to musculoskeletal conditions such as atlantoaxial instability, hip instability, and patellar instability.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old boy with Down syndrome was admitted to the emergen

BACKGROUND: Patients with lower-leg injuries and those undergoing knee arthroscopy are at increased risk of developing venous thromboembolism. The mechanism is unknown, including the influence of lower-leg injury and knee arthroscopy on natural anticoagulant factors and fibrinolysis.
OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of lower-leg injury and knee arthroscopy on plasma levels of anticoagulant and fibrinolytic factors.
METHODS: We applied the following 2 designs to investigate this effect: a cross-sectional study for lower-leg trauma and a before-and-after study for knee arthroscopy. Plasma sampl

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic pediatric patients referred for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) commonly present with traumatic bone marrow edema (BME) patterns.
PURPOSE: We sought to associate discrete MRI patterns of BME with specific injury mechanisms in pediatric knee injuries to classify injury patterns by anatomical location of the BME. We aimed to group these into 6 patterns: patellar dislocation, extensor mechanism overload, hyperextension, single compartment impaction, ligament avulsion/translation, and direct contusion.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 314 MRIs performed with a standa…

BACKGROUND: Displaced pediatric tibial tubercle fractures are commonly stabilized with screws directed posteriorly toward neurovascular structures. Here, we (1) characterize the variation of the popliteal artery among pediatric patients; and (2) recommend a safe screw trajectory for fixation of tibial tubercle fractures.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified 42 patients (42 knees; 29 female) aged 12-17 years with lower-extremity magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at a tertiary academic center. The mean patient age was 14.5 (range: 12-17) years, and the mean body mass index value was 19.1 (rang

INTRODUCTION: In this we study identified potential risk factors for post-total knee arthroplasty (TKA) nerve injury, a catastrophic complication with a reported incidence of 0.3%-1.3%.
METHODS: Patients who developed post-TKA nerve injury from 1998 to 2013 were identified, and each was matched with 2 controls. A multivariable logistic regression model was built to calculate odds ratios (ORs).
RESULTS: Sixty-five nerve injury cases were identified in 39,990 TKAs (0.16%). Females (OR 3.28, P = 0.003) and patients with history of lumbar pathology (OR 6.12, P = 0.026) were associated with incre

High-pressure injection injuries occur when equipment capable of achieving high pressure injects its contents into the human body. These injuries are largely occupational and may present as small entrance wounds with very few symptoms. However, they represent a surgical emergency, often requiring amputation. They characteristically involve the upper extremities, but other regions of the body may be injured. We present the case of a 26-year-old man who sustained a high-pressure injection injury with hydraulic oil to the knee and a literature review of this type of accident. To our knowledge, th
