Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of language.

Functional neuroimaging of language builds on almost 150 years of study in neurology, psychology, linguistics, anatomy, and physiology. In recent years, there has been an explosion of research using functional imaging technology, especially positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), to understand the relationship between brain mechanisms and language processing. These methods combine high-resolution anatomic images with measures of language-specific brain activity to reveal neural correlates of language processing. This article reviews some of what has…

Discovering protein similarity using natural language processing.

Extracting protein interaction relationships from textual repositories, such as MEDLINE, may prove useful in generating novel biological hypotheses. Using abstracts relevant to two known functionally related proteins, we modified an existing natural language processing tool to extract protein interaction terms. We were able to obtain functional information about two proteins, Amyloid Precursor Protein and Prion Protein, that have been implicated in the etiology of Alzheimer's Disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, respectively.

Nonmainstream dialect use and specific language impairment.

Most work looking at specific language impairment (SLI) has been done in the context of mainstream dialects. This paper extends the study of SLI to two nonmainstream dialects: a rural version of Southern African American English (SAAE) and a rural version of Southern White English (SWE). Data were language samples from 93 4- to 6-year-olds who lived in southeastern Louisiana. Forty were classified as speakers of SAAE, and 53 were classified as speakers of SWE. A third were previously diagnosed as SLI; the others served as either age-matched (6N) or language-matched (4N) controls. The two diale…

Hearing loss in speech-language delayed children.

An infant begins to communicate with his/her environment from the first months of life. However, true words do not appear until the age of 12-15 months, following a rather predictable sequence. Delay or failure of normal language development is not a rare situation in childhood and may be due to a variety of reasons. Among these, hearing undoubtedly plays a leading part in the language acquisition process. The purpose of this study was to assess the percentage of hearing-impaired children in a group of phenotypically healthy children presenting with speech-language delay. Between March 1993 an…

Selective language aphasia from herpes simplex encephalitis.

We report the case of a 16-year-old right-handed Chinese/English bilingual patient who developed herpes simplex encephalitis involving the left temporal lobe, with resultant aphasia. His native language was Mandarin, but he had received extensive training in English for 6 years after moving to the United States and was fluent in English. One week after admission, he could not speak, comprehend, repeat, name, read, or write in English, but he had relative preservation of most of these facilities in Mandarin. He could not write in Mandarin, and his syntax was simplified. Two months later, along …

Preschool language intervention: a follow-up study.

A follow-up study was undertaken of 38 children who had attended a preschool language unit with detailed assessments of 25 by speech therapists and an educational psychologist. The subjects were assessed in a number of areas (language, learning and social skills) using standardized tests and rating schedules completed by teachers and parents. The initial results are presented in terms of group characteristics. At a mean age of 8.3 years the children were still making progress in all areas of development. Although some 16% of the children were attending specialist schools or classes (language u…

Early childhood language delay: the otolaryngologist's perspective.

Many etiologic factors have been implicated in delayed language development in the preschool child including: low birth weight, perinatal insults to the CNS, and chronic/recurrent middle ear disease with conductive hearing impairment during the first years of life. The results of an in-depth evaluation of 24 children, who manifested preschool language delay significant enough to require remedial intervention, are reported. A suggested early identification model employing High Risk Factors and a Developmental Screening Questionnaire for use by otolaryngologists, pediatricians and audiologists i…

Language Sample Analysis Practices in a Multilingual and Diglossic Context: A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists in German-Speaking Switzerland.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the frequency, purpose, target groups, and methods of language sample analysis (LSA) among speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in German-speaking Switzerland. LSA is particularly relevant in linguistically diverse and underresearched contexts such as diglossic settings, where everyday spoken language differs from standardized varieties. METHOD: A survey was conducted among 550 SLPs in German-speaking Switzerland. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data, focusing on reported use, target demographics, and analytical methods concerning LSA. RESULTS:…

Improving the language environment for children with cochlear implants, using the LENA language and environment analysis system - A CONSORT analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the contribution of family counseling based on Language and Environment Analysis (LENA) recording data to improving the language environment of children with cochlear implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cochlear implanted children with prelingual deafness were included from 2 French cochlear implant centers and randomized between 2 age-matched groups: intervention and control. LENA recording and lexical assessment (PPVT-R or GAEL-P) were performed at T1 and, 5 months later, T2. Between the two, intervention group families received feedback from the LENA recording and parenta…

Evaluation of the information transmission of treatment with dental aligners in social media: empathetic language versus non-empathetic language.

BACKGROUND: Information presented in audiovisual format, is more effective in the retention of information by patients than traditional writ … formative content about treatment with dental aligners. One video used non-technical and empathetic language, for the level of understanding of patients (empathic video: EG), and the other used technical (similar to that used in clinical practice) but non-empathetic language (non-empathetic video: N-EG). Thirty randomized participants watched the empathic …

Empowering Language Development: A Comparative Analysis of Parent-Implemented Intervention and Therapist-Implemented Intervention in Preschoolers With Language Delay.

PURPOSE: Evidence supporting parent-implemented intervention (PII) in treating young children with language delays mostly exists in Indo-European languages. Given the linguistic diversity and cultural differences, the purpose of the study is to examine the efficacy of PII compared to therapist-implemented intervention (TII) in treating Hebrew-speaking preschool children with language delay. METHOD: In a prospective controlled study using a convenience sample, 40 toddlers with language delays were divided into two intervention groups, PII (N = 19) versus TII (N = 21). Those in the TII group pa…

Merge-based syntax is mediated by distinct neurocognitive mechanisms in 84,000 individuals with language deficits across nine languages.

In the modern language sciences, the core computational operation of syntax, 'Merge', is defined as an operation that combines two linguistic units (e.g., 'brown', 'cat') to form a categorized constituent structure ('brown cat', a Noun Phrase). This structure can be further combined with additional linguistic units based on this categorial information, respecting non-associativity such that abstract grouping is preserved. Some linguists have embraced the view that Merge is an elementary, indivisible operation that emerged in a single evolutionary step. From a neurocognitive standpoint, differe…

Assessing Language Skills as a Predictor of Children's Listening Difficulties: Validation and Reference Data on a New Auditory Language Task.

OBJECTIVES: Some children experience greater listening difficulties in noisy and reverberant environments than their peers, despite having normal peripheral hearing. In these cases, other potential causes have to be explored. One is a language disorder. Testing this possibility in audiology requires a language screening test that can be used by audiologists. This study aims to establish reference data for a screening test, the auditory cloze test (AudiCloze), to examine sex differences and to validate the results by comparing them with the standardized Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundament…

Is frontal EEG gamma power a neural correlate of language in toddlerhood? An examination of late talking and expressive language ability.

Few studies have examined neural correlates of late talking in toddlers, which could aid in understanding etiology and improving diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD). Greater frontal gamma activity has been linked to better language skills, but findings vary by risk for developmental disorders, and this has not been investigated in late talkers. This study examined whether frontal gamma power (30-50 Hz), from baseline-state electroencephalography (EEG), was related to DLD risk (categorical late talking status) and a continuous measure of expressive language in n = 124 toddlers. F…

The Influence of Caregiver Language on the Association Between Child Temperament and Spoken Language in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the interaction between child temperament and caregiver linguistic input (i.e., syntactic complexity and lexical diversity) on receptive language in children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). DESIGN: Families of 59 DHH children ( Mage = 5.66 years) using spoken language for communication participated in this cross-sectional study. Caregivers completed the Child Behavior Questionnaire-Short Form, which measured child temperament across three established factors (i.e., effortful control, negative affectivity, surgency-extraversion) and participated with their child i…

Measuring Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language learners' resilience: Development and validation of the foreign language learning resilience scale.

Despite the growing body of research on the factors of resilience in diverse fields, there is still a dearth of particular attention on foreign language learning resilience. To fill the gap, this study seeks to develop the foreign language learning resilience scale (FLLRS) to measure its psychometric scale reliability and validity in Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language contexts. Valid data were collected from 313 Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language college students who voluntarily participated in the survey. The FLLRS was validated based on a series of reliability (e.g., item analysis, spl…

Factors Modifying the Amount of Neuroanatomical Overlap between Languages in Bilinguals-A Systematic Review of Neurosurgical Language Mapping Studies.

Neurosurgery on individuals with lesions around language areas becomes even more complicated when the patient is bilingual. It is thus important to understand the principles that predict the likelihood of convergent versus separate neuroanatomical organization of the first (L1) and the second language (L2) in these individuals. We reviewed all English-language publications on neurosurgical language mapping in bilinguals before January 2020 in three databases (e.g., PubMed). Our search yielded 28 studies with 207 participants. The reviewed data suggest several principles of language organizatio…
