[The association between human toxocariasis and pyogenic abscesses].

The association between hepatic abscesses and schistosomiasis mansoni was confirmed by clinical and experimental studies. Other parasites may cause systemic immunologic changes and local structural alterations in the affected organs that can facilitate the seeding of these areas by bacteria. Tropical pyomyositis, pyogenic liver and renal abscesses are frequent diseases in tropical areas. The visceral larva migrans syndrome is caused by the presence, in the human body, of larvae of worms that have other animals as their definitive host, most commonly being caused by Toxocara canis. The larvae m…

Effect of thiabendazole on the migration of Toxocara canis larvae in the mouse.

The effects of thiabendazole on the survival and migration of Toxocara canis larvae in mice were studied. Although thiabendazole had a negli … count for the clinical improvement observed after treatment with thiabendazole in cases of visceral larva migrans, the prevention of prenatal or mammary transmission of infection in dogs, and the suppression of tissue damage by nematode larvae in general.

[Toxocariasis in children from a subtropical region].

Toxocariasis is present worldwide but people living in areas with sanitary deficiencies are considered at the highest risk of infection, par … streets without pavement. The clinical forms of the infection were: 77.8% asymptomatic, 6.7% ocular larva migrans and 15.5% visceral larva migrans. In 22 children the serological follow up until 18 months after treatment showed 10 children without change in IgG levels, in 11 it decreased but remained high, and in one it increased. There were 19 children with hi …

Human Dirofilaria repens Infection in Romania: A Case Report.

Human dirofilariasis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by the filarial nematodes of dogs Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis. Depending on the species involved, human infections usually manifest as one cutaneous or visceral larva migrans that forms a painless nodule in the later course of disease. Dirofilariae are endemic in the Mediterranean, particularly in Italy. They are considered as emerging pathogens currently increasing their geographical range. We present one of the few known cases of human dirofilariasis caused by D. repens in Romania. The patient developed unusual and s…

[Skin diseases in returning travelers: etiologies according to clinical presentation].

Dermatoses are one of the three most common causes of health problem in returning travelers. These dermatoses include infections, environmental diseases (sunburns, arthropod-related reactions) and superficial injuries. Skin infections are the most common cause of consultation after return. They include bacterial infections of cosmopolitan origin (pyoderma, abcess, cellulites) and tropical diseases (hookworm-related cutaneous cutaneous larva migrans, localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, myiasis...). Travelers abroad must be appropriately vaccinated against tetanus and specifically inst…

[Destruction of Toxocara canis eggs by the nematophagous fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia].

INTRODUCTION: Toxocara canis is an ascarid parasite of the small intestine of dogs that causes visceral larva migrans in humans. METHODS: With the aim of demonstrating the effectiveness of the fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia on Toxocara canis eggs under laboratory conditions, a trial was set up in Petri dishes with 2% agar-water. RESULTS: There was ovicidal activity of 43.8% (p < 0.01) in the treated group in relation to the control group over the periods studied. CONCLUSIONS: The results from the present study suggest that Pochonia chlamydosporia can potentially be used as an alternative bi…

Eosinophilic meningomyelitis in toxocariasis: case report and review of the literature.

Toxocariasis is a worldwide-occurring parasitic infection leading to tissue damage in various organs due to wandering Toxocara larvae (visceral larva migrans). More than 40 cases of CNS involvement in children and immunocompetent adults have been documented in detail to date. Here, we present evidence of eosinophilic meningomyelitis in an adult without known risk factors and with positive Toxocara antibody response in CSF, but not in blood. Toxocariasis has to remain among the differential diagnosis in patients with eosinophilic CNS infection even if serological tests in blood are negative. Ad…

Eosinophilic pleocytosis and myelitis related to Toxocara canis infection.

Toxocara canis causes the visceral larva migrans syndrome in which central nervous involvement is rare. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman presenting with a subacute weakness of the right leg and dysaesthesiae in the right Th8-Th10 dermatomas. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging examination showed abnormal hyperintensity within the spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed eosinophilic pleocytosis. Antibody titres to Toxocara canis were higher in the cerebrospinal fluid than in the serum. Treatment using mebendazole led to a complete clinical recovery, normalization of cerebrospi…

Immunobiological diagnosis of tropical ocular diseases: Toxocara, Pythium insidiosum, Pseudomonas (Burkholderia) pseudomallei, Mycobacterium chelonei and Toxoplasma gondii.

Of the sera obtained from 18 patients with ocular diseases comprising ocular larva migrans (OLM), Toxoplasma gondii, Mycobacterium chelonei, Pythium insidiosum bacteria and tumour, 3 sera were positive for Toxocara antibody at the titre over 1/1600 ELISA. All 3 of these sera came from males with unilateral grayish fundi. We demonstrated the value of the direct immunofluorescent assay (DIFA) on vitreous specimens from 7 cases of Toxoplasma retinitis. One vitreous specimen under electronmicroscopic examination revealed bradyzoites of T. gondii. In addition, a few cases of keratoconjunctivitis/ c…

MRI in cerebral toxocaral disease.

Toxocara canis, the common roundworm in the dog, can cause "visceral larva migrans" syndrome in humans, which may include generalised illness, eosinophilia, and symptoms arising from larval invasion of different organs. Of these, the clinically most important are liver, lungs, eyes and CNS. Involvement of the different parts of the CNS in human toxocaral disease has been described, but not the CT or MRI appearances of the cerebral lesions. In one case with a single focal epileptic fit, CT was described as normal. In the Toxocara canis case described, the cerebral lesions on MRI, before and aft…
