Paratesticular leiomyosarcomas are rare. We report two cases of leiomyosarcoma of the epididymis diagnosed and treated in a regional community hospital in Canada in 2009 and 2010. Both patients were males of ages 58 and 75, respectively. They presented with painless masses which, on ultrasonography, appeared to be solid masses demonstrating blood flow. Each patient underwent trans-scrotal resection of the affected epididymis. Pathological examination of trans-scrotal epididymectomy specimens confirmed the diagnosis of high-grade leiomyosarcoma. Leiomyosarcoma is an important differential diagn…

Peyronie's disease is relatively frequent and can cause pain and penile induration. Penile soft tissue tumors, however, are exceptional, with fewer than 45 cases reported since 1930. Some clinical and imagery elements could lead to earlier diagnosis through biopsy, enabling more extensive resections and, ultimately, better prognosis.

Leiomyosarcoma of the scrotum is a rare tumor. Cutaneous and subcutaneous leiomyosarcomas constitute the two subtypes. We report a case of cutaneous leiomyosarcoma of the scrotum in a 73-year-old man. Cutaneous leiomyosarcoma arises from the smooth muscle of the dartos or arrectores pilorum. It is often mistaken for a benign lesion. We describe the clinical and pathologic features and review the published reports of this uncommon malignancy. It is best treated by wide local excision. Inguinal lymph node dissection is not advocated, unless a high degree of suspicion is present for lymph node me…

A primary leiomyosarcoma (LMS) arising from the left fallopian tube in a perimenopausal 48-year-old woman is reported. Primary tubal LMS is an uncommon, exceedingly rare neoplasm, accounting for only a few reported cases so far. To our knowledge, the present case is the 17th tubal LMS reported in the English-language literature. The diagnosis is usually made at the time of laparotomy for a pelvic or adnexal mass or other gynaecological indications. As in ovarian neoplasms, the mainstay of treatment is represented by debulking surgery consisting of total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpin…

We report a rare case demonstrating the relationship between secondary amyloidosis and uterine leiomyosarcoma. A 59-year-old female with high fever was referred to our hospital. Laboratory tests revealed increased white blood cells, eosinophilia and an accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Endoscopic examination of the stomach and colon revealed amyloid deposits in their mucosa. The patient showed no symptoms that suggested amyloidosis. No other organs or tissues were surveyed for amyloid deposition. Ga scintigraphy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested necrotic i…

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant smooth-muscle tumor that has a predilection for the gastrointestinal tract and the female genital tract. It is locally fast-spreading and highly aggressive, and the prognosis is poor. We report two cases of leiomyosarcoma of the maxilla in patients who sought treatment for maxillary swelling, nasal obstruction, and epistaxis; one patient also had orbital involvement and cervical lymph node metastasis. Both patients underwent radical surgery followed by chemo- and/or radiotherapy. The patient with orbital involvement died shortly thereafter, but the other was disea…

Primary leiomyosarcomas arising in the penis are rare, with only 29 reported cases to date. We review the published records on this entity and describe an additional case of penile leiomyosarcoma occurring in a 53-year-old patient who underwent postectomy for a firm nodule in the prepuce. Four years later he experienced local recurrence which was successfully treated with partial penectomy.

Leiomyosarcoma of the vulva is a rare gynaecological malignancy. To date, only few cases have been reported in the literature, the majority of which are from Western countries. Although leiomyosarcoma is classically regarded as a malignant tumor, the generally favorable prognosis following surgical treatment, as well as its reduced propensity for widespread metastasis, makes it one of the most enigmatic malignancies in the medical literature. In addition, the tumor may attain enormous morphological proportions, a situation unusual in many malignant tumors.

Two general types of metastases should be distinguished in metastatic salivary gland tumors: one of them are tumors originating in the head and neck region, and the other are tumors from distant tumor sites. Distant metastasis affecting the submandibular gland are a rare entity. We report a case of the uterus leiomyosarcoma which metastatised in the submandibular gland.

Leiomyosarcomas are soft tissue tumors that account for approximately 15% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Leiomyosarcomas may be located at almost any part of the abdomen but especially are more common in the retroperitoneum, followed by gastrointestinal tract and genital system. They develop mainly in adult life and are very rare in children. In this article, imaging findings of leiomyosarcomas in various abdominal locations are presented. Radiologic studies are capable of providing useful information on the localization, size, changes in the internal structure of the tumor, its extension and in…

BACKGROUND: Myxoid leiomyosarcoma of the uterus is an extremely rare neoplasm. In young women with this disease, fertility should be considered in the treatment protocol.
CASE: A 20-year-old woman presented with a huge pelvic mass originating from the uterine wall and showing a histopathology of myxoid leiomyosarcoma. Five and one-half years after laparotomy, the recurrent tumor was found and removed. Two years after the second operation, she became pregnant, and delivered a healthy baby by cesarean section. Multiple recurrent masses were evident and removed at cesarean section. She is alive …

PURPOSE: To report a case of gastrointestinal sarcoma with leiomyosarcomatous differentiation metastatic to the eyelid.
METHODS: Clinical data including a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination, histologic findings, a bone scan, and hospital records were reviewed.
RESULTS: A 56-year-old woman with a history of esophageal cancer had a rapidly growing lesion on her right upper eyelid that was initially treated as a chalazion. A biopsy specimen of the lesion was consistent with a gastrointestinal sarcoma with leiomyosarcomatous differentiation. The esophageal tumor was reclassified after hist…

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus was diagnosed in a dog with an intestinal leiomyosarcoma. The diagnosis of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus was made on the basis of results of serum biochemical tests, urinalyses, and a water-deprivation test, along with a lack of response to exogenous administration of vasopressin following the water-deprivation test. The temporal association between resection of the intestinal mass and resolution of clinical signs of diabetes insipidus (i.e., polyuria and polydipsia) and between recurrence of clinical signs and detection of metastatic disease suggests that there…

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) accounts for 7% of all smooth tissue sarcomas. The rarity of smooth muscle cells in the oral cavity makes LMS a rare tumor in this localization. We report a case of gingival LMS in a 43-year-old woman. We reviewed 23 cases of LMS or the oral cavity report in the literature since 1980. Age of occurrence varied from 2.5 to 63 years with a predominance in the 20 to 30 years age range. In two-thirds of the cases, the first symptom was the development of a painful mass. In half the mass developed in the maxilla and in one-quarter it occurred in the gingival mucosa alone. In nea…

The occurrence of a primary leiomyosarcoma of the mesentery is rare. A 61-year-old man was admitted to the hospital complaining of an abdominal mass. The findings of both abdominal ultrasonography and a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an irregular and heterogeneous mass located in the mesentery. A laparotomy was performed and a 7.0 x 6.5 cm tumor was thus found within the jejunal mesentery. The tumor was successfully resected by a combined resection of 40 cm of the jejunum and end-to-end anastomosis of the jejunum. Pathological examination of the resected specimen revealed leiomyosarcom…

We report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the jejunum with postoperative hepatic encephalopathy. A 60-year-old man was operated for tumor of the abdomen. He was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma of the jejunum with disseminated peritoneal metastasis, but no liver metastasis and cirrhosis. A palliative resection of the jejunum was performed. After operation, disturbance of orientation and apraxia with electroencepharographic abnormality and hyperammonemia developed. He was diagnosed as hepatic encephalopathy without lesion of the liver, and died 11 months after surgery. We consider that the portosystemic…

A surgical case of leiomyosarcoma arising from the ascending colon, presenting as acute suppurative peritonitis, is herein described. A 70-year-old woman complaining of lower abdominal pain presented to our clinic on October 12, 1994. She was admitted with a tentative diagnosis of peritonitis. At emergency laparatomy, purulent intraabdominal fluid was present, and a fist-sized mass was seen in the ascending colon just proximal to the hepatic flexure. A right hemicolectomy was thus performed based on a diagnosis of perforating colon cancer. The histologic findings were consistent with leiomyosa…

A case of advanced leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder is reported in a 25-year old man who, in a short time, experienced a complete 'spontaneous' regression of his fatal illness. He first presented with severe haemoperitoneum resulting from an unresectable bleeding tumour of the urinary bladder. Debulking surgery was performed, followed by salvage chemotherapy. Histological and ultrastructural examinations of the tumour confirmed a poorly differentiated leiomyosarcoma. The residual disease failed to respond to salvage chemotherapy, but regressed 'spontaneously' 5 months after cessation of t…

Ten renal smooth muscle tumors (seven leiomyomas, three leiomyosarcomas) and an unusual smooth muscle-invested renal cell carcinoma were studied for HMB-45 reactivity. All leiomyomas strongly expressed at least one, and most expressed three, smooth muscle markers (desmin, MSA, SMSA) and were negative for two cytokeratin markers (BDK, AE1). Six of seven leiomyomas and the smooth muscle investment of a renal carcinoma contained a population of cells strongly positive for HMB-45. A total of 15 blocks from the 6 HMB-45-positive leiomyomas were studied, and no adipocytes or abnormal vessels suggest…
