BACKGROUND: Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor is a gonadal tumor of the sex cord-stromal type. It is a rare tumor comprising 0.1 to 0.5% of all ovarian tumors. Management of these cases poses a difficult therapeutic challenge.

A 53-year-old male presented with a right inguinal mass of one-year duration. The fine needle aspiration of the inguinal mass showed a highly cellular tumor composed of sheets and isolated, large round to polygonal cells with moderate pleomorphism. Many bare nuclei were seen with occasional intranuclear inclusions. A provisional diagnosis of metastasis probably of testicular tumour was made. The orchidectomy showed a brown tumor replacing the entire testis and infiltrating the epididymis. The histological features showed Leydig cell tumor without Reinke crystalloids.

Color Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic modality that has been gaining popularity in the evaluation of gynecological tumors. It demonstrates blood flow in a visually familiar way, and facilitates detection of neovascularity in pelvic tumors. In this article we describe, for the first time, a case in which a small androgen-producing ovarian tumor was localized by color Doppler ultrasound after other non-invasive imaging techniques failed.

A Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary is described in which there were heterologous elements consisting of enteric cysts and an evolving carcinoid. Endocrine cells in the cysts and carcinoid were found to contain gastrin and other polypeptide hormones. Aspects of the organization of the enteric epithelium, its histogenesis, and the possible relationship of this tumor to other cystic ovarian neoplasms are discussed.

We report 19 Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) of the testis with adipose differentiation (n = 12) and/or spindle cell growth (n = 8) in patients 28-70 years of age; three tumors with adipose differentiation showed psammomatous calcifications, two of which also had foci of ossification. This study examined the effect of continuous dark exposure (DD) on male reproductive maturation in a rat model. Male rats were reared without light from postnatal day (pnd) 21 and analyzed at pnd 35 (juvenile), 42 (peripubertal), and 90 (adult), periods related to key stages of Leydig cell development. Hyperandrogenism is a highly prevalent and debilitating hormonal disturbance encountered in women presenting with variable phenotypical features.
