From Stress to Obsession: The Role of Inferential Confusion and Obsessive Beliefs in Adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently emerges. This study examined cognitive models of OCD, the associations between stressful life events (SLEs) and symptom severity, and the unique challenges faced by adolescents living with OCD symptoms. Two indirect pathways were tested: one involving SLEs and the other perceived stress, with both pathways including inferential confusion and obsessional beliefs as mediators. A sample of adolescents presenting with OCD symptoms completed validated measures assessing stress, obsessive belie

Longitudinal association between negative life events and depression among Chinese senior high school students: the mediating role of psychological inflexibility and the moderating role of meaning in life.

BACKGROUND: Negative life events are a risk factor for depression among Chinese senior high school students. Psychological inflexibility may mediate this relationship, whereas meaning in life may serve as a buffer. Prior cross-sectional studies lack temporal evidence; this two-wave 3-month time-lagged design preliminarily tests sequential moderated mediation, whereas multiwave data support stronger causal inference. METHODS: A longitudinal survey with 3-month intervals was conducted among 940 senior high school students in Hunan Province, China. The participants completed measures assessing t

From past to present: the connection of traumatic childhood experiences, recent stressful life events, and treatment expectations in depression.

Background: Depression is often linked to adverse experiences across the lifespan, including traumatic childhood experiences and recent stressful life events. These experiences may further amplify the pre-existing pessimistically biased future perspective in depression, also affecting treatment expectations for psychotherapy. More pessimistic treatment expectations, in turn, are associated with less favourable treatment outcomes. However, little is known about how traumatic childhood experiences and recent stressful life events affect treatment expectations in depression. Objective: This analys

Sports participation moderates the risk of family-specific negative life events on alcohol use among adolescents: Evidence from the longitudinal MyLife study.

Negative life events (NLE) have been associated with increased alcohol use (AU) during adolescence. However, whether this risk association may be modified by leisure activities such as sports participation (SP) remains poorly understood. This study examined whether accumulated family-specific NLE in particular were associated with greater AU, and if so, whether SP moderated this association to reduce AU among high-NLE adolescents. We examined five annual assessments from a nationwide cohort of 3,422 Norwegian adolescents (13-15 year-olds; 55.3 % girls at baseline) who participated in the MyLif

[THE ROLE OF STRESS IN MANIC-PSYCHOTIC EPISODE DURING THE TERROR ATTACK OF OCTOBER 7 - CASE REPORT].

INTRODUCTION: The bio-psycho-social model is mostly used to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders. Even though in our era, the biological factors became more dominant in the field, the stress-diathesis model is quite acceptable to explain and understand the evolution of psychotic as well as affective disorders. BACKGROUND: In this case report we present a patient, in her late 40's, admitted to our department with a manic-psychotic episode for the first time in her life, after the massive terror attack of October 7, and in which we suggest that the signs and symptom

Latent classes of gambling in youths: The role of comorbidity, alexithymia and stressful life events by sex.

Alexithymia is related with propensity towards impulsive behavioral responses, rather than cognitive regulation of stressful events. Youth is a particularly vulnerable time for the confluence of these variables, which may impact the severity of gambling disorders (GD). However, sex differences have hardly been explored. This study aimed, firstly, to explore the frequency of GD among young people, as well as the presence of GD with other comorbid addictions. Secondly, latent classes were examined on the basis of gambling risk and their relationship to other addictive behaviors, alexithymia and

Implementation of COVID-19 vaccination services in prison in six European countries: translating emergency intervention into routine life-course vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has shown that the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is much higher in prisons than in the community. The release of the COVID-19 vaccine and the recommendation by WHO to include prisons among priority settings have led to the inclusion of prisons in national COVID-19 vaccination strategies. Evidence on prison health and healthcare services provision is limited and often focuses on a single country or institution due to the multiple challenges of conducting research in prison settings. The present study was done in the framework of the EU-founded project RISE-Vac. It aime

Social anxiety in adolescence and the first timing of parental home leaving and living with a partner: a longitudinal population-based Young-HUNT3 study in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety can make significant life transitions from adolescence to young adulthood particularly stressful. Despite the potential impact, few population-based longitudinal studies have examined the relationship between social anxiety and the timing of key markers of the transition to adulthood. This study investigated the association between social anxiety and the timing of two critical life events: first leaving the parental home and first living with a partner. METHODS: Data were drawn from 8,199 adolescents aged 13-19 who participated in the Young-HUNT3 survey (2006-2008)

Discrimination and bladder health among women in the CARDIA cohort study: Life course and intersectionality perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether discriminatory experiences are associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and their impact among 972 women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort study, which recruited participants from 4 cities in the United States. METHOD: Exposure to discrimination was assessed 3 times (1992-93, 2000-01, 2010-11) and averaged across assessments. Participants separately reported whether they experienced discrimination on the basis of their gender, race or color, and socioeconomic position or social class. For each social ident

Passive Smoking Throughout the Life Course and the Risk of Incident Rheumatoid Arthritis in Adulthood Among Women.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate passive smoking throughout the life course and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), while accounting for personal smoking. METHODS: We analyzed the Nurses' Health Study II prospective cohort, using information collected via biennial questionnaires. We assessed the influence of 1) maternal smoking during pregnancy (in utero exposure), 2) childhood parental smoking, and 3) years lived with smokers since age 18. Incident RA and serostatus were determined by medical record review. Using the marginal structural model framework, we estimated the controlled direct effect

Child Maltreatment, Youth Violence, Intimate Partner Violence, and Elder Mistreatment: A Review and Theoretical Analysis of Research on Violence Across the Life Course.

This article reports the results of a scoping review of the literature on life-course patterns of violence that span the developmental periods of childhood, adolescence, and early and middle adulthood. We also assess the evidence on elder mistreatment and its relation to earlier forms of violence. Additionally, we draw on theories and empirical studies to help explain the transmission of violence over time and relational contexts and the factors that appear to mitigate risks and promote resilience in individuals exposed to violence. Results suggest that encounters with violence beginning in ch

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Childhood Traumatic Loss: A Secondary Analysis of Symptom Severity and Treatment Outcome.

Loss is a commonly experienced traumatic event among children. Although the experience of loss can potentially lead to posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), little is known about PTSS levels after traumatic loss versus other traumatic events. We investigated data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) on trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) versus a waitlist condition for children with PTSS. In a secondary analysis, we compared participants who reported traumatic loss as their index event (n = 23) to those who reported the two most frequently reported index events in the RCT:

Social stress predicts preterm birth in twin pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether stress, anxiety and depression predict preterm birth in twin pregnancies. METHODS: A prospective cohort study with a convenience sample of women pregnant with dichorionic, diamniotic twins. They were interviewed at 24-28 weeks using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Corticotrophin-releasing hormone, ACTH and cortisol levels were assessed at 28 weeks. The main outcome was premature delivery; there were 42 preterm and 73 term births. RESULTS: Preterm births (<37 weeks) were predicted by higher levels of so

Core beliefs shaken by an earthquake correlate with posttraumatic growth.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG), psychological growth as a result of personal struggle with trauma, is hypothesized to occur when a highly stressful life event, such as a natural disaster, forces people to reexamine their core beliefs. To the authors' knoweldge, the present study is the first investigation in Japanese people examining the role of core beliefs, intrusive rumination, and deliberate rumination in PTG. Hypotheses that the level of reexamination of core beliefs, intrusive rumination, and deliberate rumination correlate with the seismicity of an earthquake and that the challenge to core

Emotional response patterns of depression, grief, sadness and stress to differing life events: a quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: In clarifying the clinical definition of an episode of major depression, DSM-5 equates bereavement with a number of other loss-related stressors (e.g. financial ruin, serious medical problems) and infers differences between such loss-related and non-loss-related responses. We undertook a study with the aim of examining the likelihood of varying life stressors leading to depression or to other emotional responses, and so allowing consideration as to whether bereavement might be equivalent to other loss-related stressful triggers. METHODS: We studied a sample comprising sub-sets of

The role of anger and ongoing stressors in mental health following a natural disaster.

OBJECTIVE: Research has established the mental health sequelae following disaster, with studies now focused on understanding factors that mediate these outcomes. This study focused on anger, alcohol, subsequent life stressors and traumatic events as mediators in the development of mental health disorders following the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, Australia's worst natural disaster in over 100 years. METHOD: This study examined data from 1017 (M = 404, F = 613) adult residents across 25 communities differentially affected by the fires and participating in the Beyond Bushfires research study.

Prospective associations between negative life events and youth tobacco use.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prospective associations between commonly-occurring negative life events (NLEs) and adolescent tobacco use. METHODS: NLEs were examined prospectively over 4 years from 1111 adolescents (mean age = 15.17 years). Family structure and parent education were assessed as confounders. Fourteen NLEs were examined and categorized into none, one, 2, or 3 or more events. RESULTS: Prospective analyses indicated that NLEs were significantly associated with tobacco use in the following wave. NLEs assessed at each wave were significantly associated with tobacco use the next year.

Mental and Physical (MAP) Training: a neurogenesis-inspired intervention that enhances health in humans.

New neurons are generated in the hippocampus each day and their survival is greatly enhanced through effortful learning (Shors, 2014). The numbers of cells produced can be increased by physical exercise (van Praag, Kempermann, & Gage, 1999). These findings inspired us to develop a clinical intervention for humans known as Mental and Physical Training, or MAP Training. Each session consists of 30min of mental training with focused attention meditation (20min sitting and 10min walking). Meditation is an effortful training practice that involves learning about the transient nature of thoughts and
