Assessment of a personalized and distributed patient guidance system.

OBJECTIVES: The MobiGuide project aimed to establish a ubiquitous, user-friendly, patient-centered mobile decision-support system for patients and for their care providers, based on the continuous application of clinical guidelines and on semantically integrated electronic health records. Patients would be empowered by the system, which would enable them to lead their normal daily lives in their regular environment, while feeling safe, because their health state would be continuously monitored using mobile sensors and self-reporting of symptoms. When conditions occur that require medical atten

Identifying Long Covid phenotypes and their association with personal characteristics, healthcare use, and daily life burden: population-based study in Belgium.

Long Covid (LC), a multisystem disorder with persistent symptoms > 4 weeks post COVID-19, has impacted healthcare systems substantially. As information is scarce for Belgium, this study aimed to identify LC phenotypes and assess participant characteristics, healthcare use and daily life burden by phenotype. The last survey wave of COVimpact (a longitudinal online cohort study among Belgian adults recruited after SARS-CoV-2 infection) focused on LC with questions on healthcare utilization and perceived daily impact. A latent class analysis (LCA) identified phenotypes, based on symptom type, dis

The Humidifier Disinfectant Disaster in Korea: Implications for Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

The humidifier disinfectant disaster in Korea was one of the most severe environmental health disasters of recent decades. It showed that indoor household chemical products used in daily life can cause fatal health effects at the population level when inhalation risks are not adequately assessed before marketing. The disaster also reaffirmed the central role of epidemiology in detecting emerging environmental health threats and guiding public health responses. Fifteen years after the disaster was recognized, major challenges remain, including defining the full spectrum of health damage, provid

Bioethics Artificial Intelligence Advisory (BAIA): An Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) Framework for Bioethical Clinical Decision Support.

Healthcare professionals face complex ethical dilemmas in clinical settings in cases involving end-of-life care, informed consent, and surrogate decision-making. These nuanced situations often lead to moral distress among care providers. This paper introduces the Bioethics Artificial Intelligence Advisory (BAIA) framework, a novel and innovative approach that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to support clinical ethical decision-making. The BAIA framework integrates multiple bioethical approaches, including principlism, casuistry, and narrative ethics, with advanced AI capabilities to pro

Behavioral and psychiatric manifestations in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare genetic syndrome with clinical manifestations due to multiple affected organ systems including limbs, gastrointestinal, skin, and central nervous systems. Although the genetic basis of CdLS is now uncovered, how behavioral manifestations are associated with genetic and brain differences are less well understood. The current focused review systematically describes the main behavioral observations to date in individuals with CdLS, which have a significant impact on quality of life and adaptive functioning. RECENT FINDINGS: The CdLS

The Family is the Patient: Promoting Early Childhood Mental Health in Pediatric Care.

Advances in developmental psychology, child psychiatry, and allied disciplines have pointed to events and experiences in the early years as the origin of many adult mental health challenges. Yet, children's mental health services still largely lack a developmental or prevention-focused orientation, with most referrals to mental health professionals occurring late, once problems are well established. An early childhood mental health system rooted in the principles of life-course health development would take a very different approach to designing, testing, and implementing prevention and interv

Using the RE-AIM Framework to Understand Pathway Home's Impact, Reach, and Long-Term Sustainability Within the Healthcare System.

Consistent evidence demonstrates that care transition programs can significantly improve mental health outcomes, treatment engagement, satisfaction, and overall quality of life. However, the extent and fidelity of implementation across behavioral health systems remain underexamined. This article applies the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework to evaluate the Pathway Home model, a community-based care transition program in New York that supports individuals returning to the community after psychiatric hospitalization or other institutional settings

Life cycle performance of urine-to-fertilizer pathways: Critical review of technologies and products.

Human urine is a concentrated nutrient stream, but its recovery is often evaluated separately in terms of treatment, fertilizer-product performance, and environmental impacts. This review integrates these dimensions from source separation to fertilizer use. Stabilization, concentration, and element-specific recovery pathways are synthesized to show how process design determines nutrient retention, product form, composition, handling, and fertilizer properties. Product performance is evaluated through mineral-fertilizer substitution, nutrient use efficiency, and soil responses, together with co

Metabolic Responses to Exercise and Nutritional Strategies in Type 1 Diabetes Using Automated Insulin Delivery Systems: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems have improved the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but exercise and nutrition remain challenging because they rapidly alter glucose flux, substrate oxidation, hepatic glucose output, insulin requirements, and fuel availability. This narrative review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the interaction between AID systems, physical activity, and nutritional strategies from a metabolism-oriented perspective. METHODS: A narrative bibliographic approach was used to integrate evidence from clinical trials, observational studies

Chronic disease multimorbidity and mental health among older adults in China: The moderating roles of family and social support.

Population aging has been accompanied by a growing prevalence of chronic disease multimorbidity among older adults, raising increasing concerns about its implications for mental health. Although previous studies have documented the negative association between multimorbidity and mental health, evidence regarding how support systems influence this relationship remains limited. Using nationally representative cross-sectional data from the 2020 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS), this study examined the association between self-reported multimorbidity and mental health among older adu

A Novel Digital Educational Strategy Improves Treatment Adherence and Quality of Life in Patients with Multiple Myeloma.

Multiple myeloma, the second most common hematologic malignancy worldwide, is an aggressive disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. Although myeloma remains incurable, new treatments have improved patients' life expectancy and quality of life. However, as these therapies are administered for prolonged and often indefinite periods, their success depends on high treatment adherence and significant patient engagement. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a novel digital educational strategy on treatment adherence, quality of life, and the development of complications in patients wi

Acceptability of supporting lay-carer administration of anticipatory subcutaneous medications at home: a qualitative study using the theoretical framework of acceptability.

BACKGROUND: Globally, evidence indicates that most people prefer to receive care and die at home, provided high-quality care is available. However, systemic and logistical challenges often prevent this outcome. Palliate is a nurse-led intervention aiming to address these barriers, supporting lay-carers in administering end-of-life subcutaneous medications to their loved ones, through training, written guidance, and documentation. AIM: To explore the perceptions and experiences of patients, carers, and healthcare professionals regarding the acceptability of the Palliate intervention, using the

Bridging Faith and Palliative Care: Catholic Clergy and Community Engagement in the United States.

Spiritual care is a core component of high-quality palliative care, yet persistent gaps remain between health care systems, professional chaplaincy, and patients' home religious communities. While patients and families frequently desire spiritual support at the end of life, evidence suggests that spiritual needs are often insufficiently addressed by medical teams and inconsistently supported by local congregations. Moreover, spiritual care delivered by community clergy when disconnected from contemporary palliative care principles may, in some cases, unintentionally contribute to delayed hospi

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Addressing Menopausal Mental Health Challenges.

Menopause marks a crucial transition in a woman's life and is often accompanied by physical and psychological changes that can adversely affect mental health. Depression, anxiety, cognitive changes, and sleep disturbances are common during the menopausal transition, yet they are frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated, particularly in lowand middle-income countries. Emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), offer new opportunities to narrow this care gap. Although AI has shown considerable promise in identifying menopause-related physical health conditions (e.g., osteo
