Risk factors in multiple carcinomas of the lip.

Certain risk factors appear to separate subjects with repeated primary carcinomas of the lip from the general population of patients with carcinoma of the lip. Factors that were found statistically significant in increasing the chance of recurrent carcinoma of the lip include outdoor occupations requiring prolonged exposure to sunlight or the use of tobacco on a regular basis. Significant risk factors of a clinical nature include a positive serologic reaction for syphilis; the presence of leukoplakia, hyperkeratosis, or actinic cheilitis; or the presence of a basal cell or squamous cell carcin

One-stage reconstruction of a defect of the oral commissure and of the cheek with a radial forearm free flap.

Several reconstructive methods have been proposed for complex clinical cases. These methods are based on composite graft tissue flaps which allow to obtain modest aesthetic-functional results. Only recently, revascularized flaps (fasciocutaneous free flap of radial) have been used. In this work, the authors present a clinical report of cheek mucosal carcinoma extended to the omolateral lip commissure, which has required the full thickness removal of the cheek, the lip commissure, and part of both lips; the use of a bileft free fasciocutaneous flap of radial (to reconstruct with a single flap b

Lower lip reconstruction with the Karapandzic flap or the Colmenero flap: Description of results.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Reconstruction of medium and large oncological defects of the lower lip must preserve the functionality and aesthetics of the area and is usually solved with local pedicled flaps, rarely compared between them. The aim of this study is to analyse our case series of lower lip reconstruction using the Karapandzic flap or the Colmenero flap, and to describe their techniques and results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent lower lip resection and reconstruction with the Colmenero flap or Karapandzic flap during the period 2

Reconstruction of Mohs Defects of the Lips and Chin.

Reconstruction of defects of the lips after Mohs micrographic surgery should encompass functional and aesthetic concerns. The lower lip and chin compose two-thirds of the lower portion of the face. The focus of this article is local tissue transfer for primarily cutaneous defects after Mohs surgery. Various flaps exist for repair. For small defects, elliptical excision with primary closure is a viable option. During reconstruction of the lip, all of the involved layers need to be addressed, including mucosa, muscle, and the vermillion or cutaneous lip. It is especially important to realign the

[Karapandzic flap for reconstruction of extensive defects of the lower lip].

OBJECTIVE: To discuss advantages and disadvantages of Karapandzic flap for reconstruction of extensive defects of the lower lip. METHODS: Two clinical observations and a review of the literature are presented. RESULTS: The Karapandzic flap requires only one operating time. The tissue used to reconstruct the lower lip is very close to the resected lip. The functional result is satisfactory, the lips being continent, allowing speech and feeding. The main advantage of this technique is the preservation of the labial sphincter, which is vascularized, mobile and sensitive. The aesthetic result is

Arteriovenous malformations and vascular anatomy of the upper lip and soft palate.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are a difficult clinical problem. These lesions may be extensive and diffuse and frequently prove refractory to the usual surgical methods of treatment. This paper presents three unusual AVMs of the orofacial region. Two were acquired AVMs of the upper lip, one involving columella; the third was a congential AVM of the soft palate. Complete surgical excision, following embolization, is the most successful therapy of traumatic AVM of the upper lip at this time. In addition, the blood supply of the upper lip and columella is presented, as it was found in ten cad

Gingivobuccal Cancers: Demographics and Geographic Variations.

Gingivobuccal cancer (GBC), a squamous cell carcinoma of the inner cheek and gum, accounted for more than 389,485 new lip and oral cavity cancer cases worldwide in 2022. Its incidence varies geographically, mainly due to endemic habits like smokeless tobacco and betel nut use. GBC is highly prevalent in South Asia compared to the West. In India, more than 30% of adults consume tobacco. Most cases in South Asia are diagnosed late, with 50% to 70% presenting in advanced stages. Males are predominantly affected, with a ratio up to 4:1, linked to higher tobacco, betel quid, and alcohol use.

Burden of Lip, Oral Cavity, and Pharyngeal Cancers in China: Estimated in 2022 and Projections to 2050.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal (LOCP) cancers comprise a heterogeneous group of malignancies with a substantial and evolving disease burden in China. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the burden of LOCP cancers in China and to project future trends. METHODS: Estimates from the GLOBOCAN database were used to quantify the incidence, mortality, and prevalence of LOCP cancers in China in 2022. Future trends were projected through 2050. Subsite-specific analyses were conducted to assess epidemiologic variations and temporal dynamics across different anatomic loca

Primary malignant melanoma of the lower lip.

Melanomas in the anatomically complex area of the head and neck impose formidable obstacles to treatment. Mucosal melanomas, for reasons which remain uncertain, are associated with a poorer prognosis. Because no systemic treatment is known to be effective, increased awareness by patients and a high index of suspicion is warranted. The disease is potentially curable if diagnosed and treated at an early stage.

Wolf's Isotopic Response: Acquired Arteriovenous Haemangioma Following Oral Herpes Simplex Virus Infection.

Cutaneous arteriovenous haemangioma (AVH) is a rare benign vascular lesion, which typically occurs on the head and neck. Its aetiology is unclear but thrombosis, trauma, infection or endocrine triggers have been proposed. We report the case of a 64-year-old female presenting with acquired AVH of the upper lip following oral herpes simplex virus infection. This is the first documented occurrence of AVH as a post-herpetic isotopic response (PHIR).

Solar cheilosis: a comprehensive narrative review.

Solar cheilosis is a premalignant disease of the lip, typically presenting on the lower lip as a precursor to in situ squamous cell carcinoma. It is primarily caused by chronic exposure to sunlight and predominantly affects individuals with lighter skin pigmentation. This review explores solar cheilosis while providing an update on its epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, disease course, and other recent advancements. Specifically, we discuss the various molecular markers involved in the pathogenesis of solar cheilosis and their respective functions. Through our analysis, we aim to highlight

Laser Therapy for the Treatment of Actinic Cheilitis: A Systematic Review.

Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a chronic inflammation of the lip considered an oral, potentially malignant disorder associated with an increased risk of lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) development. Controversies surrounding current therapeutic modalities of AC are under debate, and the implications of laser treatment have not been specifically investigated through a systematic review design. The present study aims to evaluate the degree of evidence of laser for the treatment of AC in terms of efficacy and safety. We searched for primary-level studies published before January 2022 through MEDLINE/
