The effects of ascorbate and Fe++ on lipid peroxidation are compared in liver mitochondria isolated from control and copper-deficient rats. Spontaneous, Fe++- and ascorbate-induced formation of compounds reacting with the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and the swelling in the mitochondria are studied as indicators of lipid peroxidation. The binding of products derived from the peroxidation of liver microsomal lipids to the non-lipid constituents of the microsomes was studied. Data are submitted from the published literature and the authors' investigations on the state of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant defence (AOD) in liquidators of the effects of the Chernobyl accident and those working under watch rate. Both groups patients revealed activation of LPO and AOD processes. Long-continued activation of AOD can lead to its exhaustion and become a trigger factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases and digestive disorders.

Lipid peroxides, glutathione, and metals (lead, cadmium, and arsenic) were measured in pregnant women residing in the vicinity of a copper smelter. With the carrageenin food oedema assay, we studied in rats the effects of indomethacin on inflammation, gastric ulcers and lipid peroxide levels. Our results show a positive correlation between ulceration and plasma lipid peroxides. We suggest that the ulceration could be due to inhibition of prostacyclin synthetase by lipid peroxides.

The effects of black tea (Camellia sinensis L.) on lipid peroxidation and glutathione (GSH) levels in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-treated female Wistar rats were examined. The article addresses the issue of comparative efficacy of those drug preparations having hepatoprotective action (hepatofalk, ursofalk, lipin, lavalon) by parameters characterizing lipid peroxidation (LPO). The above drug preparations enhance resistance of brush membranes, lower LPO processes. It was hepatofalk and lipin that had the most pronounced positive effect on LPO processes in patients with chronic toxic and postviral hepatitis.
