Light and Electron microscopic alterations in lymph nodes after intradermal vaccinia virus inoculation are described. In the early stages the lymph nodes show a diffuse lymphoreticular proliferation associated with the appearance of peculiar large cells called reticulolymphoblasts. This appearance can be mistaken for malignant lymphoma. Later on, these changes are replaced by markedly hypertrophied lymphoid follicles which persist for long periods. These alterations can be mistaken for follicular lymphoma. Evidence is presented that reticulolymphoblasts are derived from transformed lymphocytes

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self-limiting form of necrotizing lymphadenitis that primarily affects young adults and often mimics lymphoma or autoimmune lymphadenitis both clinically and histologically. We report the case of a 28-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis presenting with progressive cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, weight loss, and myalgia. Laboratory findings showed leukopenia, elevated transaminases, and increased LDH. Imaging revealed bilateral lymphadenopathy and mildly enlarged spleen. Histopathological examination of an excised lymph …

Retropharyngeal infections (RPIs) are uncommon in young infants and are difficult to diagnose due to their non-classical presentation. RPI c … ion and difficulty with feeding attributed to an isolated HNP caused by suppurative retropharyngeal lymphadenitis. The infant underwent incision and drainage with complete recovery of the tongue function after 8 weeks.

Behçet's disease (BD) is thought to be elicited by triggers such as tuberculosis (TB) infection in individuals with genetically aberrant immune activity, although the exact pathogenesis remains unknown. Seven cases of BD thought to be triggered by TB have been reported to date. In all cases, Behçet's symptoms improved smoothly after starting TB treatment. We present the first report of uveitis developing two months after starting TB treatment in a 46-year-old woman with tuberculous lymphadenitis presenting with oral and genital ulcers and erythema nodosum-like lesions on diagnosis of TB. The a…

BACKGROUND: Radioiodine (RAI) therapy for Graves' disease is a well-accepted and effective treatment with a good side effect profile. Short-term adverse effects can occasionally include radiation-induced thyroiditis. To my knowledge, cervical lymphadenitis associated with RAI therapy for Graves' disease has not been reported before.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old woman initially presented with uncontrolled thyrotoxicosis secondary to Graves' disease. She subsequently received RAI therapy for her condition. Within a week, she developed painful bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy that progressed to …

Ipilimumab is indicated for the treatment of melanoma in both the metastatic and adjuvant setting. Ipilimumab inhibits cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4, leading to the augmentation of T-cell activity and an antitumor immune system response. The side effect profile of ipilimumab consists of autoimmune-like events such as dermatitis, colitis, and thyroiditis. These immune-related adverse events can be serious, often resulting in the need for systemic immunosuppression with corticosteroids. We present a case of diffuse, nonnecrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis and granulomatous vasculitis in a …

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The emergence of drug resistance tuberculosis (TB) is a significant challenge for TB control and prevention programmes, and the major problem is multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The present study was carried out to determine the frequency of drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates among newly and retreated TB lymphadenitis patients and risk factors for acquiring this infection.
METHODS: Two hundred twenty five M. tuberculosis isolates from TB lymphadenitis patients who were diagnosed as new and retreated tuberculosis cases between April 2012 and M…

We retrospectively analyzed the features of the size, morphology, attenuation, the enhancement patterns, and anatomic distribution of 45 patients with mediastinal tuberculous lymphadenitis shown on contrast-enhanced multislice spiral CT (MSCT). 80% of the patients showed peripheral enhancement, and 38% of them showed multilocular appearance. deltaCT (The CT on enhanced scan minus that on the unenhanced scan) in the central area (15 +/- 12) HU was less than that in the peripheral area (27 +/- 16) HU (P < 0.01). The enlarged lymph nodes were predominantly distributed in the regions of 4R (87%), …

In the present case study, a 75-year-old, immunosuppressed man presented with recurrent cervical abscesses after a peritonsillar abscess. In the cervical region, an ulcer developed with persistent wound healing deficit. Subsequently, the patient's general condition deteriorated, showing symptoms of a Landouzy sepsis. In the course of the examination, Mycobacteria tuberculosis was detected in the cervical ulcer. He suffered from latent tuberculosis, which was reactivated by a combination of his disease, immunosuppressive therapy and the preceding peritonsillar abscess. Upon treatment with tuber

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination as a part of the global expanded program for immunization. Although the BCG vaccine is usually a safe vaccine, a number of complications with lymphadenitis being the most common complication, can occur.
AIM: We evaluated the frequency, the clinical presentation and treatment modalities of lymphadenitis after BCG vaccine in Saudi children.
RESULTS: A total of 145 patients with BCG lymphadenitis presented between January 2005 and December 2010. In the majority (103) of the cases, the lymp…

AIMS: Light-chain-restricted germinal centres are generally associated with the existence of a neoplastic lymphoproliferative disorder. The aim was to present a series of cases with persistent lymph node enlargement that featured some germinal centres showing light chain immunoglobulin restriction.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A series of six reactive lymphadenitis and two Castleman's disease cases was analysed by immunohistochemistry, IgH-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and microdissected PCR. In all cases some germinal centres contained a population of plasma cells and plasmacytoid germinal centre …

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is a rare entity, and even more rarely, it is associated with other diseases. In a few cases, the condition is associated with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis predominantly affects young women, who present with solitary or multiple cervical lymphadenopathy accompanied by symptoms such as fever, weight loss, sweating, or, in exceptional cases, hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory examinations show normal or nonspecific results. The disease is of unknown origin, although a viral origin has been…

Human infection with a zoonotic Brugia species in the United States is uncommon. Positive identification of the filarial nematode is required for histopathologic diagnosis. Many cases may go unrecognized because of the nonspecific clinical manifestations and the nondiagnostic histologic changes occurring in involved lymph nodes. A case of zoonotic Brugia lymphadenitis is described in a patient from Rhode Island, in which a small nongravid female worm was identified in a lymph node biopsy specimen. The lymph node also showed a spectrum of reaction changes including the presence of florid monocy…

To clarify the clinicopathological significance of the suppurative lesions without an epithelioid granulomatous response (SLs without Ep) in lymph nodes and their relationship to abscess-forming granulomatous lymphadenitis (AGL) and cat scratch disease (CSD), 10 cases were assessed clinicopathologically and immunohistologically. SLs without Ep were located in the subcapsular sinus, paracortical area and medullary cords, but not in the germinal centers. The microabscesses were surrounded by collections of monocytoid B-lymphocytes (MBLs), histiocytes without epithelioid features, neutrophils, sm…

This study describes the ultrastructure of Warthin-Starry (WS) stain-positive bacteria in abscess-forming reticular lymphadenitis (ARL) compatible with cat scratch disease (CSD). Sections containing WS-positive bacteria were re-embedded in Epon, and semithin sections were examined by electron microscopy. Silver particles were aggregated on the outer surfaces of the bacteria. Stereoscopic observations clearly showed that the bacteria were pleomorphic, rod-shaped, arranged in a row or at an angle, and frequently showed septal formation. Electron microscopy of ultrathin sections revealed that the…

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadentis (HNL) is an uncommon clinical and histologic entity, essentially diagnosed in Japan since 1972. The clinical picture is usually characterized by cervical lymphadenopathy and fever, females being more often affected. Leukopenia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate are frequent. The etiology is still unknown, but a viral origin is most likely. The clinical course is always favorable without treatment, except in one case. The histological picture, with necrotic foci surrounded by histiocytes, immunoblasts, small T lymphocytes and plasmacytoid monocytes
