A young gastric carcinoma patient with umbilical and scrotal metastasis.

A 21-year-old gastric carcinoma patients who showed umbilical and scrotal metastasis is reported. Cutaneous metastases are seen in 3-4% of malignant tumors. The most frequent primary sites are the breast, lung, stomach, ovary, colon, uterus and kidney. Intraabdominal malignancies may produce umbilical metastasis. The primary cancer is usually in the stomach, colon, pancreas or ovary. Umbilical metastasis from the stomach seen in our case is known as Sister Joseph's nodule which is a sign of a poor prognosis. Metastatic scrotal carcinoma is a relatively rare condition which occurs by the hemato

[Principles and technique of lymph node dissection in colorectal carcinoma].

Colorectal carcinoma is a common malignant tumor which shows a standard behavior for lymphogenic metastasis. Depending on the localization of the primary tumor the corresponding lymphatic area also has to be removed because lymph node metastases can already be present by every tumor even if there is no obvious intraoperative evidence. Lymphatic drainage is essentially oriented to the supplying arteries of the corresponding intestinal segment. The anatomy of arterial supply is individually variable and often deviates from the usual textbook presentation. In this review the oncological requireme

Rare Pituitary Metastasis from Adenocarcinoma of Right Lung in 18F FDG PET/CT.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer and cancer-related deaths, and India ranks the fourth highest country. Lung cancer is a highly aggressive malignancy with a tendency for rapid progression, making early detection and prompt treatment essential for improving patient outcomes. Lung cancer can spread locally into surrounding tissue as well as travel through lymphatics to other parts of the body, most often to bone, brain, liver, and adrenal glands. Metastasis to pituitary and pineal glands is extremely rare. The differential diagnosis for pituitary metastasis could be pituitary adenoma w

A tale of colorectal carcinoma metastases in the head and neck region: a case report.

Colorectal cancer ideally spreads via the haematogenous or lymphatic route with the most common metastasis to the liver or lungs. Metastasis of this cancer to the parotid gland has not been previously reported. This paper presents a case of rectal adenocarcinoma in a 34-year-old Pakistani male, who presented with histopathological evidence of metastasis in the parotid gland within one year of treatment. He had previously undergone neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy with surgical resection of rectal adenocarcinoma. Metastasis to the parotid gland is an uncommon occurrence in our setting and to our

Metastasis of lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma to buccinator lymph node: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Metastasis of oral cancer to the buccinator lymph nodes (BN) is uncommon. The antegrade lymphatic flow in patients with normal anatomy and physiology makes metastasis of lower gingival cancer to BN unlikely. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman presented with a 46 × 25-mm tumor on her lower gingiva, along with metastatic foci in BN and cervical lymph nodes. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, she underwent radical resection of the primary tumor and BN, along with neck dissection. Following surgery, she received adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Two years after treatment, there has been no

Lymphovascular space invasion and positive pelvic lymph nodes are independent risk factors for para-aortic nodal metastasis in endometrioid endometrial cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Para-aortic lymph node dissemination in endometrioid endometrial cancer is uncommon, and systematic para-aortic lymph node dissection increases morbidity. The purpose of this study was to identify a subgroup of endometrioid endometrial cancer patients who did not require para-aortic lymphadenectomy. STUDY DESIGN: All patients who had undergone surgery for endometrioid endometrial cancer between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with higher risk factors for nodal metastasis and inadequate lymphadenectomy were excluded. Para-aortic lymph node

Macrophage diversity in cancer dissemination and metastasis.

Invasion and metastasis are hallmarks of cancer. In addition to the well-recognized hematogenous and lymphatic pathways of metastasis, cancer cell dissemination can occur via the transcoelomic and perineural routes, which are typical of ovarian and pancreatic cancer, respectively. Macrophages are a universal major component of the tumor microenvironment and, in established tumors, promote growth and dissemination to secondary sites. Here, we review the role of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in cancer cell dissemination and metastasis, emphasizing the diversity of myeloid cells in differen

Intraureteral Metastasis From Colon Cancer Mimicking Primary Ureteral Carcinoma on FDG PET/CT.

Hematogenous or lymphatic intraureteral metastasis from distant primary cancer is very rare. We present contrast-enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings in a case of intraureteral metastasis from colonic adenocarcinoma 3 years after colectomy. The intraureteral showed moderate enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT and increased FDG uptake on PET/CT mimicking a primary ureteral carcinoma. This case suggests that metastatic tumor of the ureter should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with hypermetabolic ureteral lesion and known malignancy.

Spatial transcriptomics reveal tumor microenvironment and SLCO2A1 correlated with tumor suppression in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) is a type of head and neck tumor with malignant behavior and poor prognosis. Spatial transcriptomics is a method that spatially analyzes gene expression patterns in tissues and has been used to discover tumor microenvironment and molecular markers in various tumors. However, there are no published reports on spatial transcriptomic analysis of HSCC. METHODS: In this study, spatial transcriptomic analysis was performed on tumor tissues in situ, peritumoral tissues, and lymphatic metastatic tissues of four patients with HSCC. Morphologica

[Morphogenesis, structure and properties of lymphatic vessels].

In this paper, we present literature results related to structure and various manners of lymphatic vessel formation during embryonic development and in pathological events, such as tumorigenesis, wound healing, and other diseases. The functions of the lymphatic system include the collection of fluids that enter tissues from the circulation, absorption of lipids and lipid-soluble vitamins from the intestine and their subsequent transport, participation in antigen, dendritic cell, and lymphocyte migration. The lymphatic system is also a route for tumor cell and inflammatory cell transport. Nativ

Failure of sentinel lymph node mapping in a patient with endometrial cancer with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: A case report.

We aimed to report a detection failure of sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping via indocyanine green in a patient with endometrial cancer with a previous history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), which is a potential risk factor to obstruct lymphatic channels. A 64-year-old woman with a 12-year history of CLL presented to the clinic with grade 2 endometrioid carcinoma. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgical staging. Indocyanine green was used intraoperatively to locate the SLN. No lymph node or lymphatic vessels were identified during SLN mapping. At the final pathology, the morphologic

Hypopharyngeal and parapharyngeal space metastasis of papillary thyroid carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the thyroid gland is one of the most commonly encountered endocrine malignancies. Papillary carcinoma is the most common histological type, and its spread is usually lymphatic. About 30-80% patients with papillary carcinoma develop lymphatic metastases. CASE REPORT: We present here the case of a 70-year-old female patient who had undergone total thyroidectomy 10 years previously, with a histological diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma. A neck dissection was performed ten years after the primary operation due to a mass in the parapharyngeal space and hypopharynx.

[News on the surgical pathology of colorectal cancer].

The incidence of regional lymph node metastases in colorectal carcinoma is influenced primarily by depth of invasion, but also by histological grade of malignancy and histologically demonstrable invasion of lymphatics. With regard to the indication for limited treatment of colorectal carcinoma, a differentiation between high risk and low risk tumors is recommended. In 6% of tumors with regional lymph node metastases only micrometastases are observed whose prognostic significance is not yet established. In most cases, lymphatic spread occurs regularly, in conformity with the anatomical situatio

Role of Sentinel Lymph Node Drainage Mapping for Localization of Contralateral Lymph Node Metastasis in Locally Advanced Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma - A Prospective Pilot Study.

AIM/BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the standard of care for nodal staging in early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) as an alternative to elective neck dissection. However, the role of sentinel lymph node (SLN) and lymphatic drainage mapping with image-guided surgery has not been studied in locally advanced OSCC. Therefore, this study was undertaken to evaluate the role of lymphatic drainage mapping in the identification of contralateral cervical lymph node metastasis in locally advanced OSCC (Stage III-IVb). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have prospectively analy

Residual or recurrent head and neck cancer presenting with nerve root compression affecting the upper limbs.

Nerve root and spinal cord compression are oncological emergencies that require early detection and prompt management. These phenomena are most frequently diagnosed in patients with haematogenous metastases from lung, breast and prostate cancers and are rarely seen in patients with squamous cell cancer of the head and neck (SCCHN). SCCHN tends to spread by direct extension and lymphatic metastasis, with haematogenous dissemination occurring late in the natural history of the disease. In this paper, we report three patients with residual or relapsed SCCHN who presented with symptoms and signs o…
