Most human beings will do almost anything to prolong their existence or to relieve themselves from the suffering of a disease. Others will do anything to exploit these desires by selling what they claim to be magical remedies or panacea for all diseases-even for the incurable ones. Quack is one of the several names used for practitioners or peddlers using supposedly ineffective medicines while it also relates to advertising by doctors. This article describes the practice of quackery in ano-rectal diseases, their presentations and the complications arising out of such procedures.

Ablation of peristent AF remains challenging with questions unanswered about what the ideal next step after pulmonary venous isolation should be. Ibutilide is a highly effective class III agent for cardioversion of acute-onset atrial flutter and fibrillation, with limited clinical use due to risks of ventricular pro-arrhythmias. However, results from the on-going MAGIC-AF trial may re-invigorate its role in clinical electrophysiology as an invaluable adjunct to facilitate controlled substrate modification during ablation of persistent AF.

Some health leaders and researchers have launched mass prevention programs without sound biomedical groundwork. They have oversold the benefits of prevention and underestimated the secondary effects. Some have forced nonmedical concerns into the medical model. Others have blurred the distinctions between prevention and other measures such as screening or therapy. The fusiform gyrus is important for face and object recognition, is abnormal in schizophrenia, but has not been studied in schizotypal personality disorder (SPD). Thin-slice MR images showed no differences, either in right, left or total fusiform gyri volumes, between subjects with SPD (N=21) and normal controls (N=19). However, there was a correlation between severity of illusions and magical thinking suffered by the SPD subjects and smaller right fusiform gyrus volumes. This suggests that future studies may be useful in determining the functional competence of this gyrus in SPD.
