Characterization of transient events during intermittent photic stimulation.

Analyzing single-trial neuroelectrophysiological data complements average processing pipelines aiming to better understand generation mechanisms of brain oscillations and transient events. Given a lack of characterization of alpha-band transient events during photic stimulation, we aim to describe and characterize these transient events. EEG/MEG were simultaneously recorded during an intermittent photic stimulation paradigm employing each subject's individual alpha peak frequency. Transient events were detected in the sensor space in the time-frequency domain and were characterized by the numb

Regionally specific cortical lateralization of abstract and concrete verb processing: Magnetic mismatch negativity study.

The neural underpinnings of processing concrete and abstract semantics remain poorly understood. Previous fMRI studies have shown that multi … isentangle early processing stages from later post-comprehension phenomena. To tackle this, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG), a time-resolved neuroimaging technique, in combination with a task-free oddball mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm, an established approach to tracking early automatic activation of word-specific memory traces in the brain. We recorded the ma …

Neural signatures of task-related fluctuations in auditory attention and age-related changes.

Listening in everyday life requires attention to be deployed dynamically - when listening is expected to be difficult and when relevant information is expected to occur - to conserve mental resources. Conserving mental resources may be particularly important for older adults who often experience difficulties understanding speech. In the current study, we use electro- and magnetoencephalography to investigate the neural and behavioral mechanics of attention regulation during listening and the effects that aging has on these. We first show in younger adults (17-31 years) that neural alpha oscill…

Somatosensory and motor representations following bilateral transplants of the hands: A 6-year longitudinal case report on the first pediatric bilateral hand transplant patient.

A vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation (VCA) was performed at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), on an 8-year-old patient in 2015, six years after bilateral hand and foot amputation. Hand VCA resulted in reafferentation of the medial, ulnar, and radial nerves serving hand somatosensation and motor function. We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to assess somatosensory cortical plasticity following the post-transplantation recovery of the peripheral sensory nerves of the hands. Our 2-year postoperative MEG showed that somatosensory lip representations, initially observe…

Frontoparietal network and neuropsychological measures in typically developing children.

Resting-state activity has been used to gain a broader understanding of typical and aberrant developmental changes. However, the developmental trajectory of resting-state activity in relation to cognitive performance has not been studied in detail. The present study assessed spectral characteristics of theta (5-8 Hz) and alpha (9-13 Hz) frequency bands during resting-state in a priori selected regions of the frontoparietal network (FPN). We also examined the relationship between resting-state activity and cognitive performance in typically developing children. We hypothesized that older childr

Dynamic Construction of Reduced Representations in the Brain for Perceptual Decision Behavior.

Over the past decade, extensive studies of the brain regions that support face, object, and scene recognition suggest that these regions have a hierarchically organized architecture that spans the occipital and temporal lobes [1-14], where visual categorizations unfold over the first 250 ms of processing [15-19]. This same architecture is flexibly involved in multiple tasks that require task-specific representations-e.g. categorizing the same object as "a car" or "a Porsche." While we partly understand where and when these categorizations happen in the occipito-ventral pathway, the next challe

Alpha keeps it together: Alpha oscillatory synchrony underlies working memory maintenance in young children.

Working Memory (WM) supports a wide range of cognitive functions, and is positively associated with academic achievement. Although fMRI studies have revealed WM networks in adults, little is known about how these networks develop to support successful WM performance in children. Using magnetoencephalography, we examined the networks underlying the maintenance of visual information in 6-year-old children. We observed an increase in mean whole-brain connectivity that was specific to the alpha frequency band during the retention interval associated with correct compared to incorrect responses. Ad…

Out-of-synchrony speech entrainment in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a reading disorder often characterized by reduced awareness of speech units. Whether the neural source of this phonological disorder in dyslexic readers results from the malfunctioning of the primary auditory system or damaged feedback communication between higher-order phonological regions (i.e., left inferior frontal regions) and the auditory cortex is still under dispute. Here we recorded magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals from 20 dyslexic readers and 20 age-matched controls while they were listening to ∼10-s-long spoken sentences. Compared to controls, dyslexic

The neural bases of taxonomic and thematic conceptual relations: an MEG study.

Converging evidence from behavioral and neuroimaging studies of human concepts indicate distinct neural systems for taxonomic and thematic knowledge. A recent study of naming in aphasia found involvement of the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) during taxonomic (feature-based) processing, and involvement of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) during thematic (function-based) processing. We conducted an online magnetoencephalography (MEG) study to examine the spatio-temporal nature of taxonomic and thematic relations. We measured participants' brain responses to words preceded by either a taxonomical…

Early MEG markers for reading Chinese phonograms: evidence from radical combinability and consistency effects.

Studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging have indicated that activities in the left inferior frontal cortex and left temporoparietal regions are associated with orthographic neighborhood size. To elucidate the temporal dynamics of reading-related cortical activities, we manipulated two types of neighborhood properties for Chinese phonograms, phonetic combinability and consistency. By using source analysis techniques in combination with magnetoencephalography, the results demonstrated a combinability effect in the right fusiform gyrus at ∼ 170 ms, which may reflect perceptual experti…

[Anatomic and topographic models of the cerebral areas that activates during the linguistic functions].

AIM: A brief revision was performed in order to develop a topographic model of cerebral activation during silent reading, syllable's repetition and emotional prosody, based in recent neuroimaging studies. DEVELOPMENT: It has been reported that the words are analyzed in both occipital hemispheres during silent reading, after they are 'written' in the right temporal cortex while the integration of the semantic and phonologic processes are integrated on different left temporal areas and also in the left frontal lower part. The understanding is achieved in the left-middle temporal cortex. In the

[Focal cortical dysplasia at the primary somatosensory cortex could manifest both intractable partial epilepsy and cortical reflex myoclonus].

We report a 31-year-old patient who suffered from the left foot motor seizure since 6 years of age. In addition to spontaneous seizures, the seizures tended to be triggered by somatosensory stimulus to the left foot. Recently, he developed irregular myoclonic jerks of the left foot. Neurologically, he had mild impairment of fine movements of the left foot, but otherwise no weakness or sensory disturbance was noted. Interictal spikes were frequently recorded at the vertex region, where ictal discharges also started during the video-EEG monitoring. Electrical stimulation of the left tibial nerve

Direct or indirect? Graphical models for neural oscillators.

Univariate and bivariate time series analysis techniques have enabled new insights into neural processes. However, these techniques are not feasible to distinguish direct and indirect interrelations in multivariate systems. To this aim multivariate times series techniques are presented and investigated by means of simulated as well as physiological time series. Pitfalls and limitations of these techniques are discussed.

Cortical drives to human muscle: the Piper and related rhythms.

During voluntary activity in humans, motor units are exposed to a number of descending drives that tend to synchronize motor unit activity at particular frequencies. In particular, the contralateral motor cortex drives muscle discharge in the beta (15-30 Hz) and Piper (30-60 Hz) bands. The cortical activity in these bands is task-specific, somatopicly distributed and generally precedes muscle discharge by an interval appropriate for conduction in fast pyramidal pathways. Coherence between cortex and muscle in the beta band is found during isometric contractions of weak to moderate strength. Th

Facilitation of rhythmic events in progressive myoclonus epilepsy: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Twelve subjects with progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME) were studied with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), using single and paired magnetic stimuli at different interstimulus intervals (ISIs), and polygraphic recording. Motor threshold (T) and silent period (SP) were normal. Paired TMS showed a loss of inhibition at 100-150 ms ISI and a marked facilitation at 50 ms ISI of conditioned motor evoked potential (MEP). Polygraphic analysis showed 20 Hz oscillatory activity over the sensorimotor area coupled to contralateral myoclonic jerks. These findings suggest a condition of increased s
