Sexual assault: review of a national model protocol for forensic and medical evaluation. New Hampshire Sexual Assault Medical Examination Protocol Project Committee.

A national hospital/community model protocol was developed for the forensic and medical examination of victims of sexual assault. This review is designed to assist states in the development of sexual assault protocols. Controversial issues were addressed, including the collection of hair evidence, the importance of semen, mandatory reporting, pregnancy testing and prophylaxis, and sexually transmitted diseases including human immunodeficiency virus. The current role of DNA profiling is reviewed. These issues at the interface of medicine, forensic science, victim advocacy, and the law are analy…

Safe use of fluorinated gases in vitreoretinal surgery: learning from patient safety incidents with expert panel recommendations from the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons (BEAVRS).

BACKGROUND: Errors in intravitreal fluorinated gas selection or dilution can result in unintended expansile concentrations, causing irreversible visual loss. We aimed to quantify the problem using national incident reporting, published literature and a UK surgeon survey, developing expert consensus recommendations on safe storage, handling and intraocular use. METHODS: NHS England patient safety incident repositories (National Reporting and Learning System and Learn from Patient Safety Events) were searched for events related to intravitreal gas use (2010-2025), followed by thematic analysis.

The cutaneous manifestations and common mimickers of physical child abuse.

The cutaneous manifestations of physical child abuse are some of the most common and easily recognized forms of injury. To make an accurate assessment and diagnosis, it is important to differentiate between inflicted cutaneous injuries and mimickers of physical abuse. Likewise, an understanding of reporting guidelines helps guide practitioners in their decision making.

High burden of tick-borne encephalitis in Slovenia--challenge for vaccination policy.

Slovenia is one of the countries with the highest reported incidence rates of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Vaccination uptake is low, estimated to be 12.4%. TBE surveillance data for the last 20 years were analysed. Though nearly all of Slovenia is endemic for TBE with national yearly incidence rates up to 26.7/100,000, we showed that two regions (Gorenjska and Koroška) were much more affected than other seven regions, with annual incidence rates up to 57.2/100,000 and 76.9/100,000 population, respectively. In the last decade, there was a shift in the age distribution of reported TBE cases t

Estimating coccidioidomycosis endemicity while accounting for imperfect detection using spatio-temporal occupancy modeling.

Coccidioidomycosis, or Valley fever, is an infectious disease caused by inhaling Coccidioides fungal spores. Incidence has risen in recent years, and it is believed the endemic region for Coccidioides is expanding in response to climate change. While Valley fever case data can help us understand trends in disease risk, using case data as a proxy for Coccidioides endemicity is not ideal because case data suffer from imperfect detection, including false positives (eg, travel-related cases reported outside of endemic area) and false negatives (eg, misdiagnosis or underreporting). We proposed a Ba

Animal Rabies in Kazakhstan: Stable Endemicity, Surveillance Pitfalls, and Priority Actions.

Rabies is endemic in Kazakhstan, with the primary reservoirs being wild canids, such as foxes and dogs, maintaining distinct sylvatic and urban cycles. This paper outlines three high-return priorities for rabies control in the country, informed by the epidemiological patterns of the disease, the national regulatory framework (Order No. 7-1/587), and evidence on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the Kazakh population. The three priorities are (a) transition into a One Health, real-time surveillance system featuring standardized digital reporting and GIS-guided interventions; (b)

Clinical Reporting of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the Way Forward for Patients With Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Prospective Correlational Study.

Background Lower back pain (LBP) is a major cause of increasing years lived with disability. Many adults suffer from LBP once in their lifetime. Multiple environmental, genetic, and acquired factors lead to disc degeneration. Spinal stenosis can be caused due to bony, ligamentous, or discogenic origin. The majority of cases have a combined etiology of bony, ligamentous, and disc disease. Lumbar disc disease (LDD) has been mentioned by various terminologies in the literature. A standardized nomenclature is needed for better research and communication. Our study is based on the correlation betwe

Mandatory helmet legislation and the print media in Viet Nam.

With motorcycle ownership high and rising in Viet Nam, and motorcycle riders vulnerable to both fatal and non-fatal injury, the re-introduction of mandatory helmet legislation in 2007 has been a priority for the Vietnamese government. The paper uses a qualitative analysis of web-based versions of the eight most popular newspapers in Viet Nam to track reporting over four phases of the implementation of the legislation, identifying codes and constructing the dominant themes of the media coverage. The study documents the justification and promotion of the legislation, and the mechanisms for prepa
