A total of 130 patients with mandibular fractures of various sites were observed. One group of these patients were administered routine treatment, the other group patients were administered drugs improving the local circulation along with the physical modalities. Local circulation normalized two times sooner in this latter group, which fact accelerated the reparative processes and the treatment resulted in a sooner coalition of bone fragments and recovery of the working ability and functional parameters.

Thirty-seven children younger than 11-years-old with mandibular fractures were studied regarding age, sex, type of fracture, incidence, etiology, methods of treatment, and complications. This injury was found to represent 4.5% of all facial injuries. The male-to-female ratio was 2.4:1.0. Unilateral fractures were more common than bilateral. The condyle was involved in 36.7% of cases, and 9.2% of the fractures were subcondylar. Maxillomandibular fixation for 2 weeks was the method of treatment used in 35.1% of patients. Another 32.4% who had a combination of body and condyle fractures were trea…

Maxillofacial fractures, especially those of the mandible, pose a significant risk in microgravity environments because astronauts experience progressive bone loss during long-duration flights because of skeletal unloading. In this study, we explored the biomechanical response of the mandibular angle to high-impact trauma caused by gravity and microgravity. A human mandibular model was subjected to a force of 2000 N at an angle of 45°, which was directed posterosuperiorly at the right-angle region with simulations comparing healthy and osteoporotic bone (bone loses its density in long flights

Though the incidence of maxillofacial injuries in children is lower compared to their adult counterparts, nasal bone and mandibular fractures are among the most commonly encountered. Management and treatment of mandibular fractures, in particular condylar, in this population is challenging due to anatomical and functional considerations, and conservative management remains the treatment of choice. This case report highlights an innovative technique of conservative management using orthodontic brackets and a myofunctional appliance in a patient who sustained a condylar fracture after falling fr…

BACKGROUND: We developed a novel interlocking three-dimensional (3D) miniplate design with an adjustable configuration. As this device is new, surgeons must become familiar with its application. This study evaluated the usability and learning curves associated with the novel interlocking 3D miniplate for mandibular fracture fixation.
METHODS: The study participants, nine plastic surgeons, were asked to apply an interlocking 3D miniplate and a standard miniplate to polyurethane mandible models. The participants had completed the Basic Craniomaxillofacial Osteosynthesis course during residency

The goal of surgical treatment of mandibular head fracture is to restore anatomical relations; however, it also carries other implications. The purpose of this study is to present the alteration in the size of lateral pterygoid muscles after surgical treatment of unilateral mandibular head fractures and the impact of this change on the range of motion of the mandible. Another issue addressed is the persistence of changes in the appearance of the lateral pterygoid muscles after surgical treatment. In this study, 66 patients with unilateral mandibular head fracture were included. An additional 1

BACKGROUND: The principal transfacial routes described to approach condylar process fractures are preauricular, retromandibular, high submandibular, and their various modifications. The selection of a specific surgical approach mainly depends on the level of condylar fracture, displacement/dislocation of the proximal segment and time elapsed from the date of trauma. Not too many studies proclaim a unanimous consensus on "gold standard" approaches for particular levels of fracture.
AIM: This study was conducted with the aim to lay down guidelines for determining the ideal surgical approach for

BACKGROUND: Mandibular angle fractures (MAF) have a recognized complexity of treatment and an increased risk of incurring complications.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 45 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with an isolated MAF and no other facial fractures. The average age was 27.3 (SD = 7.7).
RESULTS: A comparatively low rate of complications (11.1%) and a low rate of reoperation (1.8%) are reported, along with a significant role of smoking in complications (p = 0.022). A non-significant association was noted between complications, male gender and assault as an aetiological

The aim of the study was to compare open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) and endoscopic open reduction with internal fixation (EORIF) of condylar fractures (CF) in adults in terms of reducing both needing of reoperation and/or facial nerve injury. An electronic search was undertaken (PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and The Cochrane Library). The inclusion criteria were full text, published from their inception to June 2020, clinical trials, randomized or not, and retrospective studies, that compared ORIF and EORIF. The estimates of an intervention were expressed as the risk rat

OBJECTIVES: Dental implants are cylindrical metallic screws inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Their location may affect the pattern of fractures that occur as a result of the traumatic forces to the mandible. The aim of this study was to investigate possible influences of dental implants on the patterns of mandibular fractures triggered by external forces.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this observational cross-sectional study, a total of 390 patients with mandibular fractures diagnosed between February 2016 and December 2020 were examined and the presence or absence of dental imp…

BACKGROUND: The maxillofacial structures are commonly affected in motorcycle crashes, with the mandible being one of the most frequently fractured bones. Helmets have been shown to have a protective effect in preventing maxillofacial injuries, however, its effect on the occurrence of mandibular fractures is not very well established.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the pattern of mandibular fractures among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania, and determine the role of helmets in occurrence of mandibular fractures among the motorcyclists.
METHODOLOGY: This was a 6-months prospective, cross-sectional…

PURPOSE: The use of plates for open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular fractures has become a widely accepted method in the past 3 decades. However, the anterior mandible is well suited to lag screw fixation owing to the thickness of its bony cortices. Hence, the purpose of the present study was to comparatively evaluate clinical outcomes of fixation using lag screws and miniplates in anterior mandibular fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty patients reporting to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery with noncomminuted anterior mandibular fractures were randomly divided…

PURPOSE: Mandibular fractures are amongst the most common facial fractures and are usually treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injuries are seen frequently in mandibular fractures as well as after ORIF of these fractures due to the exposition and the close proximity of the nerve during fracture reduction. Therefore the continuity of the IAN can be disrupted. Permanent injury to the IAN can result in diminished quality of life. This retrospective study was designed to objectively analyse the incidence and the outcome of pre- and postoperative me…

BACKGROUND: Although the fractures of the mandibular condylar region are very common, the controversies about the treatment of this area is still ongoing. In recent years, general agreement has emerged that open treatment is more effective than closed approaches for extracapsular condylar fractures. However, this time, the method of surgical approach has become controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the retromandibular transparotid approach for the fixation of subcondylar/high ramus mandible fractures.
METHODS: Subcondylar/high ramus mandible fractures were
