Steroid-Induced Ocular Hypertension in Children: A Review on Risk Factors.

Purpose: Steroid-induced ocular hypertension is poorly understood in children, despite its frequent occurrence. Significant knowledge voids exist in steroid responsiveness, especially in the pediatric population. Therefore, highlighting the most critical risk factors in pediatric patients can help ophthalmologists identify who is at increased risk of developing a high steroid response. Methods: A manual search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar in search of relevant articles on the steroid-induced glaucoma subtopic. Results: Key risk factors for high steroid response include glaucoma f

New insights into cataract surgery in patients with uveitis: A detailed review of the current literature.

Cataract is a common cause of visual impairment in uveitic eyes. The management of cataract in patients with uveitis is often challenging due to pre-existing ocular comorbidities that may limit the visual outcomes. A meticulous preoperative ophthalmic evaluation is needed to assess the concomitant ocular pathologies with special emphasis on the status of the macula and optic nerve. Preoperative control of inflammation for at least 3 months before surgery is a key prognostic factor for successful surgical outcomes. Perioperative use of systemic and topical corticosteroids along with other immun

Bone Mineral Density in Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy: The Role of Bone Marrow Tissue, Adipokines, and Insulin Resistance.

Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy (CGL) is a rare syndrome characterized by the almost total absence of subcutaneous adipose tissue due to the inability of storing lipid in adipocytes. Patients present generalized lack of subcutaneous fat and normal to low weight. They evolve with severe metabolic disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, early cardiac abnormalities, and infectious complications. Although low body weight is a known risk factor for osteoporosis, it has been reported that type 1 and 2 CGL have a tendency of high bone mineral density (BMD). In this review, we discuss the r

Otolaryngeal and Oropharyngeal Conditions: Common Ear Conditions.

Ear pain (otalgia) is a common reason for visits to family physician offices and emergency departments. Otalgia is primary when the pathology originates from the ear, and is secondary for disease processes associated with otalgia and an ear examination with normal findings. The most common diagnosis related to otalgia in children and adults is acute otitis media (AOM). It is characterized by an erythematous, bulging, and cloudy tympanic membrane. Otitis media with effusion is the presence of fluid behind the tympanic membrane without signs of inflammation. Chronic middle ear effusion is manage

Predictive validity of the GOSLON Yardstick index in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate: A systematic review.

Among the various indices developed for measuring the results of treatment in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), the GOSLON Yardstick index is the most widely used to assess the efficacy of treatment and treatment outcomes, which in UCLP cases are closely linked to jaw growth. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to validate the predictability of growth using the GOSLON Yardstick in patients born with UCLP. A systematic literature review was conducted in four Internet databases: Medline, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Embase, complemented by a manual s

Pre-trained artificial intelligence language model represents pragmatic language variability central to autism and genetically related phenotypes.

Many individuals with autism experience challenges using language in social contexts (i.e., pragmatic language). Characterizing and understanding pragmatic variability is important to inform intervention strategies and the etiology of communication challenges in autism; however, current manual coding-based methods are often time and labor intensive, and not readily applied in ample sample sizes. This proof-of-concept methodological study employed an artificial intelligence pre-trained language model, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, as a tool to address such challenges.

Update on skin cancer prevention modalities and screening protocols in solid organ transplant recipients: a scoping review.

Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) are at significantly increased risk for skin cancer, particularly due to lifelong immunosuppressant use. Despite this risk, standardized guidelines for skin cancer risk stratification and screening in SOTRs are lacking in the United States. This scoping review aims to summarize existing evidence on skin cancer prevention and screening protocols to inform the development of standardized guidelines. A systematic search was conducted using OVID, MEDLINE, and CINAHL Plus databases, focusing on English-language articles published between January 1, 2019, an
