BACKGROUND: Mass screening program for prostatic cancer (PC) using prostate specific antigen (PSA) filter paper method was performed in an urban area of Kyoto in 1995.

BACKGROUND: Elevated phenylalanine levels in maternal blood (hyperphenylalaninaemia) during pregnancy damages the developing foetal tissues. Early detection of pregnant women with hyperphenylalaninaemia and adherence to a low phenylalanine diet already before conception and throughout pregnancy can prevent this damage. We have initiated clinical selective screening for inborn errors of metabolism in China by analysing amino acids and acylcarnitines in a dried blood filter-paper samples using tandem mass spectrometry. Samples from a total of 3070 children suspected of inborn errors of metabolism were collected through a study network which covered most provinces of China.
