Influence of Contact Lens Parameters on Tear Film Dynamics.

This study employs a computational model to simulate the dynamics of tear fluid and tear film in conjunction with contact lens motion, examining the interplay between diverse contact lens characteristics-such as material, design, and dimensions-and key ocular factors like dry eye conditions, corneal size, and blink rate. These interactions are critical for customising lens fit to maximise wearer comfort. Utilising optical measurements from a single participant, the study integrates data on tear meniscus size, blink velocity, and palpebral fissure height with sixteen different contact lens para

A Mathematical Exploration of SDH-b Loss in Chromaffin Cells.

The succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) is a four-subunit enzyme complex (SDH-a, SDH-b, SDH-c, and SDH-d) central to cell carbon metabolism. The SDH bridges the tricarboxylic acid cycle to the electron transport chain. A pathological loss of the SDH-b subunit leads to a cell-wide signalling cascade that shifts the cell's metabolism into a pseudo-hypoxic state akin to the so-called Warburg effect (or aerobic glycolysis). This trait is a hallmark of phaeochromocytomas, a rare tumour arising from chromaffin cells; a type of cell that lies in the medulla of the adrenal gland. In this study, we leverage

Analysis of an HIV/AIDS Model with sexual transmission and travel in a patchy environment.

In this paper, a multi-patch HIV/AIDS epidemic model with heterosexual transmission is formulated to investigate the impact of travel among patches. It is a system of 6 n 2 ordinary differential equations describes HIV/AIDS spread in an environment divided into n patches. We derive the basic reproduction number R 0 . Lower and upper bounds on R 0 are given. We prove that if R 0 < 1 , the disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable, and if R 0 > 1 , there is at least an endemic equilibrium. We apply the model to three patches in which the disease spreads in a patch and die

Dynamical modeling and data analysis of HIV infection with infection-age, CTLs immune response and delayed antibody immune response.

HIV infection, a leading cause of AIDS, continues to impose a substantial global health burden. This study investigates the mechanisms of HIV infection and immune responses through a delayed infection-age structured model that integrates viral target cell infection, CTLs-mediated immunity, and delayed antibody immune responses. We rigorously analyze the existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of the model's solution semi-flow, followed by detailed examinations of equilibrium states coexistence and local stability. Using clinical HIV case data from Jiangsu Province, we estimate model parameters

Who Should be Controlled? The Role of Asymptomatic Individuals, Isolation and Switching in the Dominant Transmission Route in Classical and Network Epidemic Models.

We introduce two mathematical models for the spread of an SIR-type infectious disease, incorporating direct (person-to-person) and indirect (environment-to-person) transmissions, latent periods, asymptomatic infections, and different isolation rates for exposed, asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. The first model employs the classical homogeneous mixing approach, while the second uses the edge-based compartmental approach to consider heterogeneity in the number of contacts within the population through a random contact network. Key epidemiological metrics, including the basic reproductio

Beyond SIRD models: a novel dynamic model for epidemics, relating infected with entries to health care units and application for identification and restraining policy.

Epidemic models of susceptibles, exposed, infected, recovered and deceased (SΕIRD) presume homogeneity, constant rates and fixed, bilinear structure. They produce short-range, single-peak responses, hardly attained under restrictive measures. Tuned via uncertain I,R,D data, they cannot faithfully represent long-range evolution. A robust epidemic model is presented that relates infected with the entry rate to health care units (HCUs) via population averages. Model uncertainty is circumvented by not presuming any specific model structure, or constant rates. The model is tuned via data of low unc

Nonstationary Model of Oxygen Transport in Brain Tissue.

The paper addresses the mathematical study of a nonstationary continuum model describing oxygen propagation in cerebral substance. The model allows to estimate the rate of oxygen saturation and stabilization of oxygen concentration in relatively large parts of cerebral tissue. A theoretical and numerical analysis of the model is performed. The unique solvability of the underlying initial-boundary value problem for a system of coupled nonlinear parabolic equations is proved. In the numerical experiment, the tissue oxygen saturation after hypoxia is analyzed for the case when a sufficient amount

Monitoring the educational achievement of primary school children: an international collaboration.

Recent development in measuring educational outcomes has led to increased collaboration between international organisations and better understanding of education systems. From SACMEQ (Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality) a full data archive of the achievement of Grade 6 pupils in fourteen developing countries (including Seychelles) has been prepared. At the same time, from the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS) a longitudinal information system has been built on a cohort of Seychellois children from early childhood through their primary education. Application of Optimal Control to Influenza Pneumonia Coinfection with Antiviral Resistance.

Influenza and pneumonia independently lead to high morbidity and mortality annually among the human population globally; however, a glaring fact is that influenza pneumonia coinfection is more vicious and it is a threat to public health. Emergence of antiviral resistance is a major impediment in the control of the coinfection. In this paper, a deterministic mathematical model illustrating the transmission dynamics of influenza pneumonia coinfection is formulated having incorporated antiviral resistance. Optimal control theory is then applied to investigate optimal strategies for controlling th

Prefrontal neuromodulation reverses spatial associations of non-numerical sequences, but not numbers.

Numerical and non-numerical sequence items interact with spatial responding, pointing towards mental representations that are grounded in space and referred to as SNARC effects (spatial-numerical association of response codes). An ongoing controversy pertains to the universal origin of different SNARC effects and whether their underpinning is a spatial arrangement of cardinal magnitude (mental number line) or a sequential arrangement of ordinal elements in working memory. Recent results from prefrontal neuromodulation with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) were supportive of the u

Global Visual Motion Sensitivity: Associations with Parietal Area and Children's Mathematical Cognition.

Sensitivity to global visual motion has been proposed as a signature of brain development, related to the dorsal rather than ventral cortical stream. Thresholds for global motion have been found to be elevated more than for global static form in many developmental disorders, leading to the idea of "dorsal stream vulnerability." Here we explore the association of global motion thresholds with individual differences in children's brain development, in a group of typically developing 5- to 12-year-olds. Good performance was associated with a relative increase in parietal lobe surface area, most s

Sex differences in number processing: Differential systems for subtraction and multiplication were confirmed in men, but not in women.

Neuroimaging studies suggest segregated neuronal systems underlying number magnitude processing (e.g. subtraction) and arithmetic fact retrieval (e.g. multiplication). While number magnitude processing is thought to rely on the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) bilaterally, arithmetic fact retrieval is thought to rely on the left angular gyrus (AG). However, evidence from brain damaged patients and brain stimulation challenges this view and suggests considerable overlap between the systems underlying number magnitude processing and arithmetic fact retrieval. This study investigates, whether sex diffe

A Mathematical Model of Anthrax Transmission in Animal Populations.

A general mathematical model of anthrax (caused by Bacillus anthracis) transmission is formulated that includes live animals, infected carcasses and spores in the environment. The basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] is calculated, and existence of a unique endemic equilibrium is established for [Formula: see text] above the threshold value 1. Using data from the literature, elasticity indices for [Formula: see text] and type reproduction numbers are computed to quantify anthrax control measures. Including only herbivorous animals, anthrax is eradicated if [Formula: see text]. For the

What graph theory actually tells us about resting state interictal MEG epileptic activity.

Graph theory provides a useful framework to study functional brain networks from neuroimaging data. In epilepsy research, recent findings suggest that it offers unique insight into the fingerprints of this pathology on brain dynamics. Most studies hitherto have focused on seizure activity during focal epilepsy, but less is known about functional epileptic brain networks during interictal activity in frontal focal and generalized epilepsy. Besides, it is not clear yet which measures are most suitable to characterize these networks. To address these issues, we recorded magnetoencephalographic (M

Delay differential systems for tick population dynamics.

Ticks play a critical role as vectors in the transmission and spread of Lyme disease, an emerging infectious disease which can cause severe illness in humans or animals. To understand the transmission dynamics of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, it is necessary to investigate the population dynamics of ticks. Here, we formulate a system of delay differential equations which models the stage structure of the tick population. Temperature can alter the length of time delays in each developmental stage, and so the time delays can vary geographically (and seasonally which we do not consi

Planar geometrical analysis for design of the shortest incision to open the dura mater: technical note.

Quadrilateral dural window is opened with a conventional incision design, such as a pair of diagonal lines or a rectangular shape, but the total cutting length is not the shortest possible. Shorter incision length will have a lower risk of dysraphia associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) liquorrhea or related CSF infection. We propose a new and effective dural incision design with the shortest cutting length for quadrilateral dural openings. We investigated the design of the dural incision using a simple planar geometrical figure. We discovered the shortest network design to connect the fou

New concepts in molecular imaging: non-invasive MRI spotting of proteolysis using an Overhauser effect switch.

BACKGROUND: Proteolysis, involved in many processes in living organisms, is tightly regulated in space and time under physiological conditions. However deregulation can occur with local persistent proteolytic activities, e.g. in inflammation, cystic fibrosis, tumors, or pancreatitis. Furthermore, little is known about the role of many proteases, hence there is a need of new imaging methods to visualize specifically normal or disease-related proteolysis in intact bodies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this paper, a new concept for non invasive proteolysis imaging is proposed. Overhauser-en

Modeling dynamic changes in type 1 diabetes progression: quantifying beta-cell variation after the appearance of islet-specific autoimmune responses.

Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease with a long prodrome, which is characterized by dysfunction and ultimately destruction of pancreatic beta-cells. Because of the limited access to pancreatic tissue and pancreatic lymph nodes during the normoglycemic phase of the disease, little is known about the dynamics involved in the chain of events leading to the clinical onset of the disease in humans. In particular, during T1DM progression there is limited information about temporal fluctuations of immunologic abnormalities and their effect on pancreatic beta-cell function and mass.

The cognitive-behavioral model of bulimia nervosa: a direct evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: This study represented the first attempt to directly evaluate Fairburn et al's (1986) cognitive-behavioral model of bulimia nervosa--the model on which the most widely used treatment for bulimia nervosa is based. METHOD: The major predictions of the model were tested using structural equation modeling. Data were collected from the responses of 526 subjects to a number of self-report measures. RESULTS: The factors of self-esteem, overconcern with weight and shape, and dietary restraint accounted for a large proportion of the variance in binge eating and purging. The key pathway in
