Effect of telithromycin and azithromycin on nasopharyngeal bacterial flora in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of the ketolide telithromycin compared with azithromycin in eradicating S pneumoniae from the nasopharynx of adults with acute maxillary sinusitis. The growing resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to penicillin and macrolides brought about the development of a new class of antibiotics-the ketolides-that are effective against resistant pneumococci. SETTING: Otolaryngology clinic. PATIENTS: One-hundred five patients with acute maxillary sinusitis. INTERVENTIONS: Nasopharyngeal cultures were obtained before therapy and 10 to 12 days after initiation of trea…

Comparison of natural ostiotomy and antibiotic therapy in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis in rabbits.

The goal of this study was to compare natural ostiotomy and the administration of a systemic antibiotic in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis. Maxillary sinusitis was induced in 28 rabbits by blocking the natural ostium with a bone chip and by introducing 0.2 ml of a suspension of Streptococcus pneumoniae (2 x 10(9) cells/ml). The animals were divided into natural ostiotomy and antibiotic therapy groups: the natural ostiotomy group comprised 14 rabbits, in which the bone chip that blocked the natural ostium was removed; and the antibiotic therapy group comprised 14 rabbits treated with…

Chronic sinusitis and woodworking as risk factors for cancer of the maxillary sinus in northeast Japan.

In the period 1983 to 1985, 66 patients presented to six Japanese university hospitals with squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. Using self-administered questionnaires, a case-control study was conducted to examine history of nasal diseases, occupational exposures, and other possible risk factors for this disease. For each patient, two controls were selected from the general population, matched to the patient by sex, age (+/- 5 years), and district of residence. A history of chronic sinusitis was associated with a 2.3-fold increase in risk (p = 0.05). A high relative risk was also o

Effects of phenylpropanolamine on ostial and nasal patency in patients treated for chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Ostial and nasal patency were measured in different body positions and after phenylpropanolamine (Ppa) treatment in 12 patients earlier treated for chronic unilateral maxillary sinusitis of varying severity. Six of the sinuses were of normal appearance on sinoscopy. Phenylpropanolamine in a single dose of 100 mg was found to increase the equivalent ostial diameter significantly in the sitting and recumbent positions. The drug also reduced the nasal airway resistance. The Ppa effect might be of benefit in patients treated for chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The effects of treatment with antibiotics, laser and acupuncture upon chronic maxillary sinusitis in children.

UNLABELLED: In a clinical study we compared three different types of therapy in chronic maxillary sinusitis. 45 patients, 3-40 years old, were treated, 19 with antibiotics, 18 with acupuncture and 8 with Laser-acupuncture. There was no statistical difference of results between Laser-therapy and antibiotics (Chi-Square-Test). Compared to previous treatments with antibiotics, results and duration of improvement was significantly better after acupuncture. CONCLUSION: acute sinusitis, especially of frontal sinus and in younger children, will better be treated by antibiotics because of the danger …

Augmentation of Therapeutic Efficacy of Extraction of Causative Teeth by Irrigation for Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis is a clinically popular disease, but radical surgery and endoscopic surgery are often required. In the present study, we compared for the first time the therapeutic efficacy of the extraction of causative teeth with or without irrigation of the extraction fossa. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients underwent extraction of causative tooth. Among them, 34 patients underwent irrigation, while other 26 patients did not. Based on computed tomography (CT) images, treatment efficacy was quantified by the percentage of the remaining maxillary si…

Development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the development of cranium in children on computed tomography imaging.

There are available studies assessing the development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the viscerocranium. However, there are no publications analyzing the development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the development of the cranium, i.e. both the viscerocranium and the neurocranium. The aim of the study was to analyze the correlation between the dimensions of maxillary sinuses and anthropometric measurements of the cranium in children. The study was retrospective and was conducted at the based on the results of head computed tomography investigation. The study group included 180 girls an

The Combination of Panoramic Imaging and Waters' Projection Contributes to the Diagnosis of Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of adding Waters' projection to panoramic imaging compared with panoramic imaging or Waters' projection alone. Maxillary sinusitis in 106 patients (206 sinuses) was retrospectively assessed with panoramic imaging, Waters' projection, and computed tomography imaging by two oral radiologists. The diagnostic performance was assessed with computed tomography imaging as the gold standard. Receiver operating characteristic curves and area under the curve values were obtained. Inter- and intra-observer agreement was quantified using weighted ka…

The Healing Effects of Autologous Mucosal Grafts in Experimentally Injured Rabbit Maxillary Sinuses.

OBJECTIVES: Healing processes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are quite complex, and poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to compare the effect of mucosal autologous grafts on the degenerated rabbit maxillary sinus mucosa with spontaneous wound healing. It is hypothesized that mucosal grafts will enhance ciliogenesis and improve the morphology of regenerated cilia. METHODS: Ten female New Zealand rabbits were included in the study. They underwent external maxillary sinus surgery through a transcutaneous approach. A total of 20 maxillary sinuses were randomly divided into 2 groups: 'sp
