Deployment of a computerized ward visitor registration system in coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic: Experiences of a large academic medical center in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Visitors to hospitalized patients during an epidemic might themselves be carriers and are therefore likely to spread the disease in wards. Although measures were taken to restrict hospital visits, traditional paper-based registration is insufficient to screen and monitor the numbers of visitors to a large hospital. METHODS: Throughout March 2020, during the coronavirus disease 2019 crisis, a computer system was deployed in the 2800-bed Taipei Veterans General Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan) to register, screen, and monitor inpatient visitors. This system comprised three parts: online re

Avoidable hospitalizations in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidable hospitalizations are hospitalizations for indications that could have been prevented by prompt and appropriate outpatient treatment. Avoidable hospitalizations thus serve as an indicator of poor access to, or underutilization of, medical care. This study examined risk factors for avoidable hospitalizations among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: Data were obtained on acute-care hospitalizations in a population-based sample of 8,670 patients with SLE age > or =18 years hospitalized in New York state in 2000, 2001, and 2002. Hospitalizations were cl

Shaken but prepared: Analysis of disaster response at an academic medical centre following the Boston Marathon bombings.

Over the last decade, there has been a rise in the number of mass casualty incidences (MCIs) and their subsequent effect on hospital systems. While there has been much discussion over improving procedures to treat victims of MCIs, there has not been a thorough, systems-based analysis concerning the costs incurred by hospitals during such events. Here the authors examine the history of the Hospital Incident Command Center and how its evolution at Tufts Medical Center helped mitigate the damage following the Boston Marathon Bombings. Tufts' unique variations to the Hospital Incident Command Cent

Online comments on smoking bans in psychiatric hospitals units.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with mental health concerns are disproportionately affected by and suffer the negative consequences of tobacco use disorder, perhaps because smoking has historically been part of psychiatry's culture. In the early 1990s, psychiatric inpatient facilities were exempted from U.S. hospital smoking bans, in response to public outcry with national media attention. Almost 2 decades later, the current study characterizes online conversation about psychiatric hospital smoking bans. Previous commenting studies have demonstrated commenting's negativity, documenting the "nasty effec

Quality of water for reprocessing of medical devices in healthcare facilities in Nepal.

Reusable medical devices are decontaminated and sterilized often many times by healthcare facilities across the globe. Reprocessing of medical devices comprises several processes and water plays an important role in some of these, including cleaning and steam sterilization. The water used is required to have certain qualities to ensure the effectiveness of the processes. In this short communication, we report findings of our study which measured quality parameters (pH, total hardness) for water used for medical device reprocessing in 13 primary and secondary care public hospitals in Nepal. Value-based outsourcing is associated with better environmental and economic sustainability metrics while maintaining patient safety: a comparative analysis of electricity use, water use, and prescription costs in public hospitals of Madrid (Spain).

BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems face growing pressure to maintain high-quality care while improving environmental and economic sustainability. Hospitals are resource-intensive institutions, contributing substantially to energy and water consumption, pharmaceutical expenditure, and healthcare-related greenhouse gas emissions. Value-based healthcare models, including value-based outsourcing of publicly funded hospitals to private networks, have shown promise in improving quality and efficiency. However, their impact on sustainability outcomes remains underexplored. This study compared environment
