INTRODUCTION: Neurological manifestations in Behçet's disease usually consist of meningoencephalitis and cerebral thrombophlebitis. Myelitis is rare, especially when it is the only neurological manifestation.
EXEGESIS: The authors report three cases of acute myelitis complicating Behçet's disease demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging. In two cases, Behçet's disease was revealed by myelitis. The three cases were transverse myelitis, two of which were juvenile Behçet's disease and two were meningomyelitis.
CONCLUSION: Magnetic resonance imaging can help guide diagnosis of myelitis in Behç

Between January 1995 and December 1996 nonendemic or only regionally occurring arthropodborne parasites including ehrlichiae and parasitic arthropods in Germany were detected in 484 dogs, whereby at least 15 species were involved. Listed in decreasing order, Leishmania infections occurred most frequently, followed by infections/infestations with Babesia canis, Ehrlichia canis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dirofilaria immitis and Dermacentor reticulatus. The other species, namely Babesia gibsoni, Trypanosoma congolense, Hepatozoon canis, Ehrlichia platys, Dirofilaria repens, Dipetalonema reconditu

The incidence of parental inbreeding on biological fitness was analysed in a sample of the Alpujarrenian population. Fitness was estimated as the fertility and offspring viability from conception to reproductive age. The analysed sample represents about 45% of the population from the Alta Alpujarra Oriental in southeastern Spain, and includes 847 families and 2916 pregnancies. The results showed slightly higher reproduction in consanguineous marriages, but the differences observed were not statistically significant. Higher pregnancy numbers are usually interpreted as stemming from greater immu

Toscana virus (named after Tuscany, Italy) is an arthropod borne virus transmitted by sandflies. It is common in the Mediterranean region, several southern European countries and some North African countries, but is rare in the UK. Most Toscana virus infections are asymptomatic, but severe infections can have neurological manifestations. Toscana virus encephalitis is an uncommon self-limiting encephalitis with a vasculopathy. We report an elderly man who developed Toscana virus encephalitis and vasculopathy causing multiple ischaemic strokes with evidence of reversible intravascular stenosis, …

Both X-linkage and a parent-of-origin effect have been hypothesized in manic-depressive disorder. We have previously shown an allelic association between X-linked G6PD deficiency and manic depression in Mediterranean populations. To test both X-linkage and a parent-of-origin effect in manic depression further, we have studied 274 Sardinian manic-depressive probands and their parents. Excess of maternal transmission (P = 0.005) of major affective disorder was found in male probands carrying the G6PD-Mediterranean mutation. Our results provide indirect molecular support for an association betwee

BACKGROUND: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD; E.C.1.1.1.49) deficiency is the most common human enzymopathy; nearly 400 different biochemical variants of the enzyme have been described. Sardinia is the Italian region with the highest frequency of this defect.
METHODS: We examined genomic DNA of 16 subjects with G6PD Mediterranean, 2 with G6PD Athens-like, 1 with G6PD Ferrara 2 (all as biochemically defined).
RESULTS: All G6PD Mediterranean subjects had a C-->T mutation at nucleotide 563 and a C-->T transition at nucleotide 1311; G6PD Athens-like and Ferrara 2 subjects had a G-->C muta

Increasing water scarcity and climate-related extremes are amplifying the need for safe water reuse, however, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may not fully remove viral pathogens, posing potential risks to freshwater environments. This study assessed human enteric and respiratory viruses using (RT)-qPCR, along with faecal indicators using culture-based methods, at WWTPs in two Mediterranean protected areas (Albufera Natural Park and the Ebro River region) across three campaigns. A total of influent (n = 33), reclaimed wastewater (n = 33), biosolids (n = 32), surface water (n = 33), and sed

BACKGROUND: Sand fly-borne phleboviruses (SbPV) are globally distributed and pose potential public health risks. Despite increased detection in recent decades, detailed knowledge of their ecology, characteristics and clinical relevance remains limited. Many cases of SbPV infection likely go unreported or misdiagnosed due to limited awareness and the lack of standardized screening. The External Quality Assessment (EQA) reported herein was organized within the framework of the European Union CLIMOS (EU Climate Monitoring and Decision Support Framework for Sand Fly-borne Diseases Detection and Mi

BACKGROUND: Diflubenzuron (DFB) is one of the most used insecticides in mosquito larval control including that of Culex pipiens, the proven vector of the recent West Nile Virus epidemics in Europe. Two mutations (I1043L and I1043M) in the chitin synthase (CHS) putative binding site of DFB have been previously reported in Cx. pipiens from Italy and associated with high levels of resistance against this larvicide.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we report the identification of a third mutation at the same I1043 position of the CHS gene resulting in the substitution of Isoleucine to Phenyla

BACKGROUND: The Leishmania developmental life cycle within its sand fly vector occurs exclusively in the lumen of the insect's digestive tract in the presence of symbiotic bacteria. The composition of the gut microbiota and the factors that influence its composition are currently poorly understood. A set of factors, including the host and its environment, may influence this composition. It has been demonstrated that the insect gut microbiota influences the development of several human pathogens, such as Plasmodium falciparum. For sand flies and Leishmania, understanding the interactions betwee

Under natural conditions, light exposure for Mediterranean shrubs can be highly variable, especially during cloudy days or under a canopy, and can interfere with other environmental factors such as temperature and water availability. With the aim of decoupling the effect of radiation and temperature from water availability, we conducted an experiment where two perennial and three summer semi-deciduous shrub species were subjected to different levels of irradiation. In order to follow plant responses to light exposure, we measured gas exchange, photosystem II photochemical efficiency, photosynt

We identified the ectoparasites and helminth fauna of yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis michahellis), breeding near to a solid waste landfill, and compared infection levels with those of other yellow-legged gull colonies. Moreover, we analysed correlations between parasites and sex and body condition of yellow-legged gulls, co-infections and the helminth community structure in order to propose the role of this species as reservoir of certain parasites. We also discuss the potential transmission of parasites between the yellow-legged gull and the endangered Audouin's gull, because interact

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Primary gout has traditionally been associated with obesity, arterial hypertension, and abnormal lipid and glucose homeostasis, but we do not know the prevalence of these vascular risk factors in patients with primary gout from a Mediterranean country.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: All patients with primary gout and 2 or more acute arthritis episodes documented by a physician were selected for the study. The diagnosis of MS required ≥3 criteria (ATP III). Patients were classified in two groups: decreased (underexcretors) and normal (normoexcretors) uric acid excretion relate

The incidence and prevalence of cystic echinococcosis have fallen dramatically over the past several decades. Nonetheless, cystic echinococc … ic echinococcosis in human and animal hosts is found in countries of the temperate zones, including Mediterranean regions, southern and central parts of Russia, central Asia, China, Australia, South America and north and east Africa. In this article, the geographic distribution and epidemiology of cystic echinococcosis worldwide are reviewed.

OBJECTIVES: In an endemic area for leishmaniosis and filariasis, coinfection can occur and the immunomodulation triggered by Wolbachia infection might influence the clinical signs and progression of both diseases. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of Wolbachia in dogs infected with Dirofilaria immitis and other filarial nematodes, to evaluate the prevalence of coinfection of Leishmania infantum, filariae and Wolbachia and their association with clinical presentation.
METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction assays were performed to detect filarial species, Wolbachia species an

Canine infection by vector-borne hemoparasites is frequent in tropical and sub-tropical areas where exposure to hematophageous ectoparasites is intensive. A reverse line blot (RLB) assay was designed to improve the simultaneous detection of all named canine piroplasm species combined with other vector-borne pathogens of dogs including Ehrlichia canis, Hepatozoon canis and Leishmania infantum common in the Mediterranean basin. Blood samples of 110 dogs from Spain (n=21), Portugal (n=14) and Israel (n=75) were analyzed. The study evaluated 2 groups of dogs, 49 dogs with piroplasm infection detec

We used a localized ozone (O3) fumigation (LOF) system to study acute and short-term O(3) effects on physiological leaf traits. The LOF system enabled investigation of primary and secondary metabolic responses of similarly and differently aged leaves on the same plant to three different O3 concentrations ([O3]), unconfounded by other influences on O3 sensitivity, such as genetic, meteorological and soil factors. To simulate the diurnal cycle of O3 formation, current-year and 1-year-old Quercus ilex (L.) and Quercus pubescens (L.) leaves were fumigated with O3 at different positions (and hence,

Mercury concentrations, non-protein thiol levels and the enzyme activities of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were measured in the blades and sheaths of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica. The seagrass was collected in January and June and at three sites: the Bay of Rosignano (Italy) known for its mercury contamination, the north of the Lérins islands (Bay of Cannes, France), the Bay of Tonnara (Corsica, France). The two latter sites are considered as free of any known industrial inputs. Mercury concentrations and GST activities in both tissues were always higher in samples from Rosignan

Concentrations of mercury and methylmercury residues were determined in the muscle tissue of three cartilaginous fishes Chimaera monstrosa (ghostshark), Torpedo nobiliana (electric ray) and Myliobatis aquila (eagle ray) from the Mediterranean Sea. The highest mean levels of total mercury were detected in ghostshark (3.14 mg/kg wet weight), followed by electric ray (2.42 mg/kg wet weight), and eagle ray (0.83 mg/kg wet weight). Such a variability is influenced by quite a number of factors, among which size, fish ecology and feeding habits. The percentages of the methylated form to total mercury
