Differential remoteness and emotional tone modulate the neural correlates of autobiographical memory.

Autobiographical memory relies on complex interactions between episodic memory contents, associated emotions and a sense of self-continuity … erm memory processing, which suggests a time-limited differential involvement of the hippocampus in memory consolidation. Interestingly, the observation of such a time-dependent involvement of the hippocampal region in memory consolidation corresponds to the course of retrograde amnesia observed in demented patients, with the loss of recent memories appearing during e …

Hippocampal electrical stimulation disrupts associative learning when targeted at dentate spikes.

KEY POINTS: Dentate spikes are fast fluctuations of hilar local-field potentials that take place during rest and are thought to reflect inpu … h after training retards associative learning. We suggest dentate spikes play a significant role in memory consolidation. ABSTRACT: Hippocampal electrophysiological oscillations, namely theta and ripples, have been implicated in encoding and consolidation of new memories, respectively. According to existing literature, hippocampal dentate spikes are prominent, short- …

Region-specific changes in brain activity and memory after continuous positive airway pressure therapy in obstructive sleep apnea: a pilot high-density electroencephalography study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Limited channel electroencephalography (EEG) investigations in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have revealed deficits in slow wave activity (SWA) and spindles during sleep and increased EEG slowing during resting wakefulness. High-density EEG (Hd-EEG) has also detected local parietal deficits in SWA (delta power) during NREM. It is unclear whether effective continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment reverses regional SWA deficits, and other regional sleep and wake EEG abnormalities, and whether any recovery relates to improved overnight memory consolidation. METHODS:…

Visuocortical tuning to a threat-related feature persists after extinction and consolidation of conditioned fear.

Neurons in the visual cortex sharpen their orientation tuning as humans learn aversive contingencies. A stimulus orientation (CS+) that reli … xperience-based changes in the sensitivity of visual neurons show response patterns consistent with memory consolidation and spontaneous recovery, the hallmarks of long-term neural plasticity.

Hippocampal-cortical interaction during periods of subcortical silence.

Hippocampal ripples, episodic high-frequency field-potential oscillations primarily occurring during sleep and calmness, have been described … activations of association and primary cortical areas. These findings suggest that during off-line memory consolidation, synergistic thalamocortical activity may be orchestrating a privileged interaction state between hippocampus and cortex by silencing the output of subcortical centres involved in sensory processing or potentially mediating procedural learning. Such …

Evidence for functional specialization of hippocampal subfields detected by MR subfield volumetry on high resolution images at 4 T.

Animal studies suggest an involvement of CA3 and dentate gyrus (CA3&DG) in memory encoding and early retrieval and an involvement of CA1 in late retrieval, consolidation and recognition. The aim of this study was to test if similar associations could be found between hippocampal subfield volumes measured in vivo using a manual parcellation scheme and selected scores of the California Verbal Learning Test II (CVLTII): total immediate free recall discriminability (IFRD), short free recall discriminability (SFRD), and delayed recall discriminability (DRD). 50 elderly subjects (25 controls and 25

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 modulates the transcriptional activity of the mineralocorticoid receptor and regulates expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

Glucocorticoids, major end effectors of the stress response, play an essential role in the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS) and contribute to memory consolidation and emotional control through their intracellular receptors, the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors. Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5), on the other hand, plays important roles in the morphogenesis and functions of the central nervous system, and its aberrant activation has been associated with development of neurodegenerative disorders. We previously reported that CDK5 phosphorylated the glucocorticoid rece…

Efficacy of slow oscillatory-transcranial direct current stimulation on EEG and memory - contribution of an inter-individual factor.

Despite many reports on beneficial effects of anodal slow oscillatory-transcranial direct current stimulation (so-tDCS) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep on memory consolidation, frequent negative outcomes have also been observed. Our working hypothesis is that so-tDCS efficacy is strongly dependent upon the susceptibility of the underlying network. One component determining susceptibility of the network is hypothesized to be reflected in learning or 'task-induced' plastic changes. Another component is hypothesized to represent inter-individual confounds. Twenty-five (15 female) healt…

Okadaic acid blocks the effects of 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine on consolidation, acquisition and retrieval of morphine-induced place preference in rats.

Recent studies indicated that epigenetic modification, especially DNA methylation, play an important role in the persistence of addiction-related memory. 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine (5-aza), an inhibitor of DNA methyltransferases, was approved for clinical treatment. However, it is not clear whether 5-aza is involved in opiate addiction. In this study, using the morphine-induced conditioned place preference (mCPP) model in rats, we injected 5-aza into hippocampus (CA1) and prelimbic cortex (PL), and tested the behavioral consequences at various stages of consolidation, acquisition and retrieval. Astrocytes in Fear Memory Processing: Molecular Mechanisms Across the Amygdala-Hippocampus-Prefrontal Cortex Network.

Fear memory is a critical adaptive process that enables organisms to avoid potential threats and survive in complex environments. Traditionally viewed as a neuronal phenomenon, emerging evidence has demonstrated that astrocytes play a fundamental role in fear memory acquisition, consolidation, extinction, and retrieval across the distributed neural network encompassing the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. This review presents recent advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which astrocytes modulate fear memory processing within the tripartite circuit. We examin

Vulnerability of skeletal and autonomic manifestations of memory in the rat to electroconvulsive shock.

A series of experiments was performed to probe the phenomenon of sparing of memory by electroconvulsive shock (ECS) when amnesia is assessed by autonomic indices. Differential vulnerability of memory as indexed by skeletal and autonomic responses was determined to be a function of a higher threshold to disruption for autonomically indexed memories. Autonomic responses spared by ECS were found to reflect underlying memory rather than artifact produced by nonassociative factors arising from the interaction of conditioned stimulus (CS), unconditioned stimulus (US), and ECS. Furthermore, retrograd

Spider toxin (JSTX-3) inhibits the memory retrieval of passive avoidance tests.

The effect of a spider toxin (JSTX-3)--a specific blocker of quisqualate sensitive type of glutamate receptors--on learning and memory was studied in mice using passive avoidance tests (step-through and step-down tests) and the water maze test. JSTX-3 was injected into lateral ventricles of chronically cannulated mice at a dose of 22.2 pmol/brain, which did not produce any apparent behavioral changes. This chemical significantly impaired the retrieval of memory in the step-through test and showed a similar (though not statistically significant) tendency in the step-down test, but it had no eff

Bridging cognition and emotion: A developmental model of quantitative skills growth in postsecondary education.

The interaction between cognition and emotional regulation is key to the acquisition of academic skills, and, at present, theoretical frameworks that combine these two aspects in the context of Postsecondary Education are underdeveloped. This paper will model how cognitive and emotional variables interact to contribute to the Development of quantitative skills in undergraduate students. We examined the two-way interaction among mathematics anxiety, self-efficacy beliefs, working memory capacity, and performance trajectories on quantitative reasoning tasks using a longitudinal dataset from thre

Learning as a model for neural plasticity in major depression.

BACKGROUND: The neuroplasticity hypothesis of depression proposes that a dysfunction of neural plasticity-the basic ability of living organisms to adapt their neural function and structure to external and internal cues-might represent a final common pathway underlying the biological and clinical characteristics of the disorder. This study examined learning and memory as correlates of long-term synaptic plasticity in humans to further test the neuroplasticity hypothesis of depression. METHODS: Learning in three tasks, for which memory consolidation has been shown to depend on local synaptic re…

Targeting fear memories: Examining pharmacological disruption in a generalized fear framework.

Labilization-reconsolidation, which relies on retrieval, has been considered an opportunity to attenuate the negative aspects of traumatic memories. A therapeutic strategy based on reconsolidation blockade is deemed more effective than current therapies relying on memory extinction. Nevertheless, extremely stressful memories frequently prove resistant to this process. Here, after inducing robust fear memory in mice through strong fear conditioning, we examined the possibility of rendering it susceptible to pharmacological modulation based on the degree of generalized fear (GF). To achieve this

The Cannabis Constituent Cannabigerol Does Not Disrupt Fear Memory Processes or Stress-Induced Anxiety in Mice.

Introduction: Medicinal cannabis has proliferated around the world and there is increasing interest in the therapeutic potential of individual plant-derived cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids). Preclinical evidence suggests the phytocannabinoid cannabigerol (CBG) could be useful in treating brain disorders, including stress and anxiety-related disorders. In this study, we aimed to explore whether CBG disrupts various contextually conditioned fear memory processes and trauma-induced anxiety-related behavior in a mouse model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Materials and Methods: All mice

Do greater mouse-eared bats experience a trade-off between energy conservation and learning?

Bats, some species of rodents and some birds are able to save energy during the summer period by decreasing their body temperature and falli … d shorter search times in bats exposed to 22°C than in those exposed to 7°C. Our data indicate that memory consolidation of bats under natural conditions is not affected by daily torpor when bats are in good condition and may therefore defend against a rapid fall into torpor. We suggest that homeostatic processes connected with the circadian rhythm allow protection of …
