Serum levels of placental protein 14 reflect ovulation in nonconceptional menstrual cycles.

Placental protein 14 (PP14), originally isolated from the human placenta and its adjacent membranes, was detected in the serum of nonpregnant women. The levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in 218 serum samples from 19 women throughout the menstrual cycle. In 13 women with a normal ovulatory cycle, the levels showed consistent variation. They were highest (up to 172 ng/ml) in the late secretory phase and remained high for the first days of the next cycle. Low concentrations were found from the midproliferative to the early luteal phase of the cycle. No similar variation was seen in anovula…

The influence of oral contraceptives on the frequency of acute appendicitis in different phases of the menstrual cycle.

From the results of the study presented, it can be concluded that, in a group of patients not using contraceptive pills, a significant difference is noted in the frequency of acute appendicitis and the number of appendectomies performed in the different phases of the menstrual cycle. This difference almost disappears in the group of patients using the contraceptive pill. These results suggest that the female sex hormones might have some influence on the biologic nature of acute appendicitis or influence the inflammatory process in the appendix. These findings might help to individualize the ap…

Skeletal muscle function does not differ between menstrual cycle phases: A prospective cohort study across three cycles.

Fluctuations in ovarian hormones across the menstrual cycle have been proposed to influence skeletal muscle function, yet current evidence remains inconsistent. This study investigated associations between menstrual cycle phases and multidimensional outcomes of skeletal muscle function across three menstrual cycles. In this prospective cohort study repeated within-subjects measurements were performed during the early follicular, ovulatory and mid-luteal phases in physically active eumenorrheic females. Cycle phases were verified using luteinizing hormone detection and salivary hormone analysis…

Variability of menstrual cycles by age, polycystic ovary syndrome, and early-life cycle irregularity in the apple Women's Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common endocrine disorder, characterized by oligomenorrhea and androgen excess. Only a few studies have addressed the natural history of menstrual cycles among women with polycystic ovary syndrome and/or irregular cycles, most with limited sample size and homogenous populations. OBJECTIVE: We describe age-related differences in menstrual cycle length and regularity for those with and without a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: We included participants in the Apple Women's Health Study, a digital US cohort, who consented and enrol…

A scoping review of hormonal clinical trials in menstrual cycle-related brain disorders: Studies in premenstrual mood disorder, menstrual migraine, and catamenial epilepsy.

UNLABELLED: Cyclic variations in hormones during the normal menstrual cycle underlie multiple central nervous system (CNS)-linked disorders, including premenstrual mood disorder (PMD), menstrual migraine (MM), and catamenial epilepsy (CE). Despite this foundational mechanistic link, these three fields operate independently of each other. In this scoping review (N = 85 studies), we survey existing human research studies in PMD, MM, and CE to outline the exogenous experimental hormone manipulation trials conducted in these fields. We examine a broad range of literature across these disorders in …

Linking knowledge, belief and awareness of menstrual cycle with oral health in young India women.

Limited awareness of the relationship between menstrual cycle-related hormonal changes and oral health remains a concern among young women, particularly in developing settings. Hence, this study assessed knowledge, beliefs and awareness regarding menstrual cycle and its correlation with oral health among women aged 18-30 years attending a government medical college. A total of 400 participants completed a validated questionnaire and underwent clinical examination using Gingival Index and Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified. Although general menstrual knowledge was adequate in 67.5% of participants, …

Predictors of Nurse Practitioners' Adherence to Menstrual Cycle-Related Practice Recommendations in Pediatric Primary Care.

PURPOSE: The menstrual cycle is an important but often neglected indicator of the overall health of menstruating adolescents. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offer menstrual cycle-related practice recommendations for providers caring for this population. About a quarter of primary care in the United States is provided by nurse practitioners (NPs); yet, factors influencing their adherence to these practice recommendations remain underexamined. We explored factors that predicted NPs' reported adherence to ACOG/AAP menstr…

Sex and menstrual cycle effects on cerebrovascular responses to a single foot cold pressor test.

The cold pressor test (CPT) involves cold water immersion of upper or lower limb(s) to elicit hemodynamic responses and can be used as a stimulus for understanding sex differences in vascular regulation. Limited research exists on understanding cerebrovascular responses to CPT, though previous work suggests males have higher levels of common carotid artery (CCA) dilation than females during CPT. Additionally, it is unclear whether menstrual cycle phase or use of exogenous hormones affect the CPT response in females. This study aimed to assess how the CCA responds to the CPT in males versus fem…

Menstrual cycle effects on foot and ankle musculoeskeletal biomechanics: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle are associated with a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in women; however, their impact at the foot and ankle level remains underexplored. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the potential biomechanical effect of the ovulatory phase on foot and ankle structure compared to other phases of the menstrual cycle, given its possible association with injury occurrence. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web Of Science, and Embase (last 10 years), following PRISMA gui…

Menstrual cyclicity of cannabis use: a longitudinal study using phase-aligned cycle time scaling (PACTS).

BACKGROUND: Despite rising rates of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) among females, research on female-specific implicated factors remains limited. Emerging evidence suggests that substance use behavior may fluctuate across the menstrual cycle, particularly among individuals with premenstrual disorders (PMDs). However, findings for cannabis use are limited and inconsistent. The present study aimed to investigate menstrual cyclicity of cannabis use likelihood and quantity, and potential implicated factors. METHODS: Naturally cycling individuals with diagnosed or suspected PMDs were…

HIV-Exposed Seronegative Female Sex Workers Show Different Cellular Immune Profiles Across the Menstrual Cycle.

PROBLEM: Female sex workers (FSWs) are at higher risk of acquiring HIV. Interestingly, some FSWs who are highly exposed remain seronegative for HIV (HESN). This natural resistance to HIV infection has been attributed to an immune quiescence (IQ) phenotype. Our study investigates how the menstrual cycle phases (follicular and luteal) impact the immune responses in Kenyan FSWs. METHODS: This is a part of the Longitudinal Assessment of Mucosal Immune Quiescence study (LAMIQ), 48 FSWs not living with HIV and not using hormonal contraception were followed for a menstrual cycle and divided into two…

Cortical morphology variations during the menstrual cycle in individuals with and without premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is hypothesized to stem from maladaptive neural sensitivity to ovarian steroid hormone fl … using structural magnetic resonance imaging during the mid-follicular and late-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Group-by-phase interaction effects on cortical architecture metrics (cortical thickness, gyrification index, cortical complexity, and sulcal depth) were assessed using surface-based morphometry. RESULTS: Independently of menstrual cycle phase, a m …

Proof-of-Concept for Long-Term Human Endometrial Epithelial Organoids in Modeling Menstrual Cycle Responses.

Endometrial disorders, such as infertility and endometriosis, significantly impact reproductive health, thus necessitating better models to study endometrial function. Current in vitro models fail to replicate the complexity of the human endometrium throughout the entire menstrual cycle. This study aimed to assess the physiological response of human endometrial organoids (hEOs) to in vitro hormonal treatments designed to mimic the hormonal fluctuations of the menstrual cycle. Endometrial biopsies from three healthy women were used to develop hEOs, which were treated over 28 days with three hor…

Influence of menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on MS symptom fluctuations: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, females with MS often report menstrually-related symptom fluctuations. Hypothetically, use of oral contraceptives (OCs) could reduce these fluctuations, particularly continuous OCs (11+ weeks of consistent exogenous hormones followed by 1 week placebo). OBJECTIVES: To prospectively capture (1) whether neurologic and generalized symptoms vary with menstrual cycle phase and (2) whether type of contraception impacts symptom fluctuations. METHODS: In this two-center pilot study, females with MS and a regular menstrual cycle prospectively tracked their menstrual …

The healthy female microbiome across body sites: effect of hormonal contraceptives and the menstrual cycle.

STUDY QUESTION: How does hormonal contraceptive use and menstrual cycle phase affect the female microbiome across different body sites? SUMMARY ANSWER: The menstrual cycle phase, but not hormonal contraceptive use, is associated with the vaginal and oral but not the gut microbiome composition in healthy young women. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Women with low vaginal levels of Lactobacillus crispatus are at increased risk of pre-term birth, fertility treatment failure, sexually transmitted infections and gynaecological cancers. Little is known about the effect of hormonal fluctuations on other bod…

Menstrual cycle affects iron homeostasis and hepcidin following interval running exercise in endurance-trained women.

PURPOSE: Menstrual cycle phase affects resting hepcidin levels, but such effects on the hepcidin response to exercise are still unclear. Thus, we investigated the hepcidin response to running during three different menstrual cycle phases. METHODS: Twenty-one endurance-trained eumenorrheic women performed three identical interval running protocols during the early-follicular phase (EFP), late-follicular phase (LFP), and mid-luteal phase (MLP). The protocol consisted of 8 × 3 min bouts at 85% of the maximal aerobic speed, with 90-s recovery. Blood samples were collected pre-exercise and at 0 h,…
