BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Forensic psychiatry has experienced a significant development in the last few decades. Several mechanisms underlie this shift, including deinstitutionalization of mental health patients and extraordinary progress in neurosciences, imaging technologies and psychology, just no name a few. This development has put in evidence specific needs for training and education. A review and comparison of forensic psychiatry training in several European countries, U.S.A. and Brazil is made.
METHODS: A mixed approach was used, including a) systematic literature review (Pubmed search, 19

The purpose of this literature review is to evaluate the extant research addressing food insecurity and mental health among street-involved 2S/LGBTQI+ youth in Canada. Searches were undertaken in academic databases, Google, and Google Scholar for relevant research articles, reports, and grey literature. Our team found nil research specifically addressing food insecurity and the mental health of street-involved 2S/LGBTQI+ youth in Canada. Given that, contextual and contributory factors affecting the mental health and food security of this population are discussed. The available research demonst

The field of psychopathology is in a transformative phase, and is witnessing a renewed surge of interest in theoretical models of mental disorders. While many interesting proposals are competing for attention in the literature, they tend to focus narrowly on the proximate level of analysis and lack a broader understanding of biological function. In this paper, we present an integrative framework for mental disorders built on concepts from life history theory, and describe a taxonomy of mental disorders based on its principles, the fast-slow-defense model (FSD). The FSD integrates psychopatholo

Throughout the world, women involved in criminal justice systems often present with substantial needs and vulnerabilities. Diverting vulnerable people away from prison is government policy in England and Wales, but full psychiatric and social assessments are expensive and hard to access. A screening and quick response initiative - alternatives to custodial remand for women (ACRW) - was implemented across three areas of London (West, South and East) to supplement existing court liaison and diversion services, to assess the feasibility of a supplementary custodial remand service as part of a wom

The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015 (ADMCA) provides a legislative basis for advance healthcare directives (AHDs) in Ireland. AHDs offer important benefits to patients, including preserving autonomy and allowing for greater control over end-of-life care. However, they can also create difficult ethical dilemmas, especially in respect of AHDs refusing basic care, pain relief and palliative symptom management. We use a hypothetical case study to interrogate how such directives should be addressed under the ADMCA and identify some uncertainties and ambiguities within the ADMCA concern

This article addresses the question of how the capacity to make a freely responsible decision in assisted suicide can be assessed and evaluated. Based on medical ethics and legal principles as well as international comparisons, it is argued that the decision to commit suicide places special demands on autonomy, decision-making and inner strength. The concept of "free responsibility" is analysed in contrast to legal capacity and capacity to consent and is located in its proximity to these concepts. An operationalisation is proposed that includes understanding, autonomous evaluation, sustainable

The Supreme Court's decision in Reference by the Attorney General for Northern Ireland [2026] UKSC 16 represents the most significant development in deprivation of liberty jurisprudence since P v Cheshire West and Chester Council; P and Q v Surrey County Council [2014] UKSC 19. Whilst the proceedings arose from a challenge to proposed revisions to the Northern Ireland Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Code of Practice under the Mental Capacity Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 (MCA (NI) 2016), the judgment extends considerably beyond the issue of consent that formed the basis of the Attorney

The high global prevalence of school violence underlines the need for prevention. However, there are few scientifically evaluated intervention approaches that aim at preventing violence by teachers. We evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of the preventative intervention Interaction Competencies with Children for Teachers (ICC-T). In a cluster randomized controlled trial we assessed attitudes towards and use of violence by teachers (self-reported and reported by students) at eight schools in four regions in Tanzania. Two regions were randomly assigned as intervention regions. Data were asses

Examples of patients with anorexia nervosa, depression or borderline personality disorder who have decision-making capacity as currently operationalized, but refuse treatment, are discussed. It appears counterintuitive to respect their treatment refusal because their wish seems to be fuelled by their illness and the consequences of their refusal of treatment are severe. Some proposed solutions have focused on broadening the criteria for decision-making capacity, either in general or for specific patient groups, but these adjustments might discriminate against particular groups of patients and

David Browne was suffering from motor neurone disease and was anxious to ensure that as his disease progressed and he ceased to be mentally capacitated he would not be given artificial feeding and ventilation. He therefore arranged to draw up a living will in which he gave an advanced refusal of such treatments. The document was duly signed and witnessed. Only 3 months after signing the living will he was severely injured in a road accident and brought into hospital unconscious. He was carrying his living will in his pocket. The doctors were concerned that if they operated and he required vent

Some bioethicists have argued in favor of a sliding scale notion of competence, paternalistically requiring greater competence in relation to more significant risk. I argue against a sliding scale notion, taking issue with the positions of Allen E. Buchanan and Dan W. Brock, Ian Wilkes, and Joel Feinberg. Rejecting arguments that a sliding scale is supported by legal cases, by ordinary usage, and by fallible judgments about competence, I argue in favor of greater evidence of competence when risk is greater. Two clinical cases are examined, both involving amputation, to show that my fixed conce

OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between patient-reported mental illness diagnosis and symptoms and BRCA1/2 genetic testing intention among women undergoing screening mammography.
SAMPLE & SETTING: 100 multiethnic women of lower socioeconomic status who were undergoing mammography screening and met family history criteria for BRCA1/2 genetic testing.
METHODS & VARIABLES: Descriptive and bivariate nonparametric statistics and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine associations between mental illness and genetic testing intention. Variables were anxiety, depression, patient-r

This study examined the effects of different plyometric training configurations on mental well-being in post-pubertal highly trained male soccer players. Participants were assigned to bilateral (4 × 8; n = 10), high-volume unilateral (4 × 8; n = 10), or low-volume unilateral (4 × 4; n = 11) training groups. Pre-post assessments included cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, self-confidence, attention, and emotional competence. Baseline scores were similar across groups for most variables (p > 0.05), except total emotional competence, which was higher in the unilateral 4 × 4 group (F = 13.4, p <

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience identity confusion, social difficulties, and internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Physical activity offers opportunities for peer interaction and teamwork, which may help alleviate negative emotions. This study aims to investigate the pathways through which physical activity influences internalizing problems in adolescents with ASD.
METHODS: A total of 436 adolescents with ASD were recruited using a combination of random and convenience sampling. Participants were assessed using the Physical Activit

OBJECTIVE: To identify and to measure entry level competencies (knowledge, skills, attitudes, judgements) for nurses to practice safely and effectively in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
INTRODUCTION: Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small sub-Saharan country between South Africa and Mozambique. There are four nursing programs approved by the Eswatini Nursing Council (ENC) that provide nursing education in the areas of general nursing, midwifery, mental health and community health. The mandate of the ENC is to protect the public and to this end licensed nurses must be able to meet standar

The chronic hair pulling of a 36-year-old woman with moderate mental retardation was initially treated with a simplified habit-reversal (SHR) procedure that consisted of awareness training, competing response training, and social support. When SHR did not produce large and sustained reductions in hair pulling, an awareness enhancement device was added, and it reduced hair pulling to near-zero levels in two settings. The results are discussed, and directions for future research with this device are provided.

A previously healthy and immuno-competent 22-year-old man presented in confusional psychosis. Cryptococcal meningitis was later found to be the underlying cause as proven by culturing Cryptococcus neoformans serotype A from the cerebrospinal fluid. Combined antifungal therapy with amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine resulted in sustained improvement of all mental and physical functions. Cryptococcosis has rarely been reported from the Middle East. This represents the second case from Kuwait.

We report the case of a 69-year-old Hispanic female with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis and a complex medical history who presented with acute altered mental status shortly after initiating valacyclovir at a non-renally adjusted dose. The patient was admitted to inpatient services and treated with a presumptive diagnosis of valacyclovir-associated neurotoxicity (VAN). The patient received hemodialysis for three consecutive days, resulting in neurologic improvement. Additional competing causes of altered mental status and encephalopathy were investigated and ruled out over the c
