The mental health status of 79 woman hospital nurses and 69 woman office workers with less than three years of service were examined with the "mental disorder" scale and the "loss of morale" scale in a cross-sectional survey. The mentally disordered status characterized by "neurasthenia symptoms" and "feeling job hard," which is similar to "burn-out syndrome," was observed in nurses especially in their first year of service. In 1987, a survey of eye abnormalities was undertaken of the mentally handicapped patients in Stoke Park Hospital, Bristol. The total population was 367 patients (262 females and 105 males). Of the 367 patients reviewed, 218 were found to have one or more eye anomalies (including the Down's Syndrome group), which shows that more than half the patients suffered from eye disorders (59%). A clinical and family study was carried out in 169 children attending schools for the mildly mentally retarded in Southampton to assess the prevalence of recognised medical risk factors; 71 children (42%) had such risk factors. These were prenatal in 22, perinatal in 41, and postnatal in eight. Risk factors of possible, but less certain, significance were found in a further 63 children (37%). In 86 families (51%) there was a history of serious educational problems in both parents. The prevalence of both types of risk factor was higher in the children whose parents had no educational problems.

Recent studies with strict management protocols for selection of cases for trial of vaginal delivery for full-term breech presentations show no significant differences in outcome brought about by the birth route. An ophthalmic evaluation was undertaken in 250 consecutive cases of mental retardation where no specific etiological diagnosis could be established, ie, "idiopathic" mental retardation. A seroepidemiologic investigation was conducted in order to determine the cause of an apparent increase in rates of eosinophilia among 1400 institutionalized children during 1976-1977. A study of the relationship of culture change to the frequency of mental illness in the outpatient clinic in the city of Cairo indicates that rapid industrialisation tends to produce significantly higher rates of patients who were judged to have serious symptoms of depression especially among village migrants who moved from their villages to work in the city's factories. A suggestive explanation is that the higher rates of depression are a factor of the social disorganisation associated with moving from the village to the city.
