Owner-reported treatments and outcomes of perceived injuries to the thoracic and pelvic limb of agility dogs.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the type of veterinary care sought by handlers of injured agility dogs, the types of treatm … ) and tibia (61%), and least likely for reported injuries to the carpus (34%), metatarsus (33%) and metacarpus (22%). Treatment of reported injuries to the antebrachium and stifle were most likely to be directed by a veterinarian (>70%), while reported injuries of the thigh (51%) and hip (53%) were least likely. Rest was the most common treatment for all inj …

The use of body surface temperatures in assessing thermal status of hutch-reared dairy calves in shaded and unshaded conditions.

The study was carried out in a Hungarian large-scale dairy farm during a 5-day period in hot August weather. Altogether 16 preweaning calves … me intervals as rectal temperature with an infrared thermometer. Measuring sites included: the leg (metacarpus), muzzle, eye bulb, scapula, and ear. Statistical analyses were performed to assess the effects of shading on environmental and body temperatures and to also assess the strength of the association between core, skin and ambient temperatures; to esti …

Clinical assessment of patients with systemic sclerosis: is there a place for thermography?

Recurrent changes of temperature and persistence of cooling along fingers at the room temperature make hands the most frequent region of int … ailfolds in thumbs and fingers II-V, as well as the difference in average temperatures (TΔ) between metacarpus of the hand and its thumb and fingers II-V. Both thumbs and fingers II-V remained cooler in subjects with dcSSc compared to those with lcSSc. This implicated a significantly greater TΔ along thumbs and fingers II-V in dcSSc group. Although Tavg at n …

Fractures in older adults. A view of the future?

INTRODUCTION: It is accepted that the incidence of fractures in patients aged ≥ 65 years is increasing but little is known about which fract … ce. In males there is an increasing incidence of fractures of the proximal humerus, distal humerus, metacarpus, pelvis, femoral diaphysis, distal tibia and ankle. In females the basic epidemiology of fractures in the ≥ 65 year old population was very similar to the fractures seen in younger females and we believe that the increasing incidence of fractures in …

Biomechanical testing of the calcified metacarpal articular surface and its association with subchondral bone microstructure in Thoroughbred racehorses.

BACKGROUND: Palmar/plantar osteochondral disease (POD) and third metacarpal/-tarsal condylar fractures are considered fatigue injuries of su … surface material properties can also be detected in horses that have fatigue injuries of the distal metacarpus and at other sites in the skeleton. Measures of SCB connectivity and trabecular surface shape may be more important determinants of resistance to failure of the calcified articular surface than traditional measures such as SCB volume and density.

Isolated avulsion fracture of the extensor carpi radialis brevis insertion due to a boxer's injury.

Avulsion fractures involving the radial wrist extensor tendons are extremely rare. Only 8 avulsion fractures of the extensor carpi radialis longus and 7 avulsion fractures of the extensor carpi radialis brevis have been previously reported. We know of no case involving an isolated avulsion fracture of the base of the third metacarpal where the extensor carpi radialis brevis attachment to the fracture fragment was still completely intact. This article reports a patient with an isolated avulsion fracture of the extensor carpi radialis brevis insertion treated by open reduction and internal fixat

Metacarpal lengthening by distraction osteogenesis in childhood brachydactyly.

Metacarpal lengthening was performed by callus distraction in six children with brachydactyly. Four of the patients were girls and two were boys, with ages ranging from 10 to 14 years (mean age: 12 years). Four of the patients had brachydactyly resulting from injury to the hand and damage to the epiphysis related to infection, while the other two had congenital brachymetacarpia. Two patients had short thumbs, two had short index fingers, and the remaining two had short ring fingers. General anesthesia with a pneumatic tourniquet was used during surgery for all patients. Distraction was initiat

Clinical results of intraarticular fractures of the base of the fifth metacarpal treated by closed reduction and cast immobilization.

This retrospective study evaluated the results of closed reduction and cast immobilization for isolated intraarticular fractures of the base of the fifth metacarpal. Twenty-two of 37 such fractures were available for follow-up at an average of 43 months, and these had all healed at an average of 5 weeks without any cast complications. Twenty patients reported excellent or good results, and two reported fair or poor results. At follow-up, 13 had no arthrosis and nine had mild arthrosis of the carpometacarpal joint. However, outcome was not influenced by fracture type, the degree of subluxation

A syndrome of digital fibromas, facial pigmentary dysplasia, and metacarpal and metatarsal disorganization.

We report on a girl with fibrous tumors involving hands and feet associated with unusual brachydactyly and facial abnormalities with pigmentary skin lesions. The multiple, infiltrative fibrous tumors clinically resembled recurring digital fibromata (RDF) of infancy, but eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies pathognomonic for RDF were not demonstrated in her tumor cells. Skeletal alterations of the hands and feet comprised brachymesophalangy with cone-shaped epiphyses and variable shortening and deformity of the metacarpals and metatarsals. Facial abnormalities included upward slant of palp

Ophthalmo-acromelic syndrome (Waardenburg) with split hand and polydactyly.

We report on a boy with anophthalmia, split hand, oligodactyly, syndactyly and polydactyly: These features are consistent with the diagnosis of the ophthalmo-acromelic syndrome (Waardenburg). However, the hand anomalies have not been reported yet. This observation helps to extend the wide range of expressivity of this rare syndrome.

[An unusual variation of luxation of the wrist: external vertical luxation. Apropos of a case. Review of the literature].

A case of lateral dislocation of the carpal scaphoid associated with a fracture of the triquetral and carpo-metacarpal dislocation of the ring and little finger is described. A thorough search of the literature failed to reveal any previous report of this combination of injuries. The dislocation was reduced by manipulation, but the scapholunate ligament required surgical repair. The results after two year was good.

Colles' fractures: the use of the metacarpal index as a prognostic indicator investigated.

The radiographs of 25 patients who presented to the Whittington Hospital with Colles' fractures were studied. Measurements of dorsal angulation and radial shortening were made on radiographs taken at presentation, following reduction (where performed) and 5 weeks after injury. The presence, and degree, of osteoporosis was assessed using the metacarpal index. There was a strong correlation between the degree of osteoporosis and age. There was no correlation between the degree of osteoporosis, as determined by the metacarpal index, and either the severity of the injury or the final result. Thus,

[Forum: reconstruction of the traumatised thumb. Reconstruction of the amputated thumb by progressive lengthening of the 1st metacarpal using mini-fixator. Apropos of 2 clinical cases].

The authors report two cases of reconstruction of a mutilated thumb by progressive elongation of the first metacarpal without the need for bone grafts, using a minifixation elongation device, which is very easy to use. It allows distraction which can be performed by the patient himself and adjustment to the desired length, up to 40 mm.

Coronal fracture of the body of the hamate: case reports.

Coronal fracture of the body of the hamate with associated dorsal subluxation of the bases of the fourth and fifth metacarpals is rare. Two cases of this injury with and without disruption of the dorsal carpometacarpal ligaments treated with open reduction and internal fixation are reported. Oblique roentgenographic views with the hand pronated 30 degrees from the true lateral were helpful in the assessment of the fracture.

Giant-cell reparative granuloma of the hand and foot bones.

Giant-cell reparative granuloma (GCRG) is an uncommon benign reactive intraosseous lesion. It occurs in the skull, jaw, hand, foot, and facial bones and rarely in other skeletal sites. It is a solitary, lytic, expanded lesion and infrequently may extend into the surrounding soft tissue. Histologically, it is composed of fibrous stroma with spindle-shaped fibroblasts, multinucleated giant cells, and inflammatory mononuclear cells. Areas of hemorrhage are uniformly present. It may be difficult to distinguish this entity from an aneurysmal bone cyst, giant-cell tumor, or brown tumor of hyperparat
