OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the tympanotomy and pressure equilibrium tube insertion during palatoplasty on the alleviation of otitis media with effusion.
METHODS: A total of 49 ears in 38 cases of patients with cleft palate and otitis media with effusion were only treated with palatoplasty. Other 39 ears in 24 patients with middle ear effusion were treated with the palatoplasty and insertion of pressure equilibrium tubes. The function of the middle ear in each patient was evaluated 6 months after the operation.
RESULTS: 48.7% of ears with middle ear eff

AIMS: This paper describes ethnic differences in acute hospitalisations for otitis media (OM) and elective hospitalisations for ventilation tube insertion in New Zealand children aged 0-14 years. Ethnic differences in first attendances at Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) outpatient clinics are also described.
METHOD: The analysis included all hospital admissions of children aged 0-14 years during 2002-2008 which met the following criteria: Acute admissions with an ICD-10-AM primary diagnosis code of otitis media; and elective admissions with a primary procedure code of ventilation tube insertion. Fi

Children with cleft palates often suffer from chronic conductive hearing losses, delayed language acquisition and speech disorders. This study presents results of speech and language outcomes in relation to hearing function and types of palatal malformations found. 417 children with cleft palates were examined during followup evaluations that extended over several years. Disorders were studied as they affected the ears, nose and throat, audiometry and speech and language pathology. Children with isolated cleft lips were excluded. Among the total group, 8% had normal speech and language develop

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is prevalent in girls with Turner Syndrome (TS). A number of cross-sectional studies have confirmed that conductive hearing loss due to middle ear disease and permanent, progressive sensorineural hearing loss are both very common and often unrecognised in TS. Hearing screening has been suggested by many authors and is recommended in some recent national audiology guidelines (every 3-5 years in an international consensus statement, every 1-2 years in the USA and every year in the UK). The effectiveness of such regular hearing screening has not been assessed before.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear cavity, common amongst young children. The fluid may cause hearing loss. When persistent, it may lead to behavioural problems and a delay in expressive language skills. Management of OME includes watchful waiting, medical, surgical and mechanical treatment. Autoinflation is a self-administered technique, which aims to ventilate the middle ear and encourage middle ear fluid clearance by providing a positive pressure of air in the nose and nasopharynx (using a nasal balloon or other handheld device). Treatment of Ménière's disease (MD) is still controversial and pressure changes transmitted to the inner ear have been reported to have effects similar to those of other non-surgical therapies. This paper reports on a clinical trial of MD patients which has been carried out using a portable piece of equipment, called Meniett, which delivers a pulsed, controlled, positive pressure to the middle ear, provided that a ventilation tube (VT) has previously been inserted. A comparison was made of the number of vertigo spells during the 2 months before treatment and during the 40-day treatment period.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of a new device, the Meniett, in the treatment of Meniere's disease. The device delivers pressure pulses to the middle ear through a ventilating tube in the tympanic membrane at a frequency of 6 Hz for 0.6 second. After rising to a pressure level of 1.2 kPa, the pressure oscillates between 0.4 and 1.2 kPa. It is believed that the pressure changes are conveyed to the inner ear, inducing a transport of fluids via the pressure outlets and thus reducing the endolymphatic hydrops.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of otitis media in Greenlandic children is one of the highest in the world. International studies have shown that otitis-prone children may benefit from tubulation of the tympanic membrane. However, it is unknown whether these results can be applied to Greenlandic children and trials on the effects of ventilation tubes in high-risk populations have, to our knowledge, never been conducted.
METHODS: The trial is an investigator-initiated, multicentre, randomized, blinded superiority trial of bilateral ventilation tube insertion versus treatment as usual (no tube) in G

A frequently occurring symptom following COVID-19 is dizziness. Yet, the causes of post-COVID-19 dizziness are still largely unclear. This paper presents a case of a patient in his 40s who developed persistent dizziness after a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Dizziness only occurred during nasal respiration. Inspection of the tympanic membrane on respiration indicated a patulous eustachian tube (PET). Video-oculography showed a slight nystagmus during nasal respiration. Placement of a tympanostomy tube 6 months after the start of symptoms immediately resolved the dizziness, and nystagmus during nasal re

The objective of this study is to evaluate otitis media with effusion (OME) among patients with parapharyngeal tumor. We have experienced 82 parapharyngeal tumor cases and encountered 14 patients complaining of hearing loss due to OME as the initial symptom. These patients showed normal nasopharyngeal findings and the presence of tumor had been detected long time after the beginning of their hearing symptoms (4 months to 13 years: median 2.5 years). Six patients had undergone ventilation tube insertion on the affected ear, which may lead to delay in diagnosis. Pathological examination was perf

Background The eustachian tube is a tubular structure connecting the middle ear cavity with the nasopharynx, providing ventilation and pressure equalization in the middle ear, mucociliary clearance, and preventing the reflux of sound and fluid from the nasopharynx. Therefore, any kind of deficiency in this tube will lead to eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Aim This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of ETD in the Taif public. Materials and methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among the public in Taif, Saudi Arabia and it was done during the per

BACKGROUND: The etiology of otitis media with effusion (OME) is multifactorial and complex, with increasing evidence implicating bacterial infection as a potential contributor. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been identified as key participants in the pathophysiological processes of various infectious diseases. However, to date, no studies have quantitatively assessed NETs in OME or explored its role in the middle ear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to quantitatively assess NETs and mucins in different types of middle ear effusion (MEE) in children with OME, investigate the correlation

1274 T-tubes were inserted for persistent otitis media with effusion in 661 patients over a 4-year period. The peak ages for insertion were between 4 and 7 years, and by 11 years the condition is uncommon. If a tube has not extruded spontaneously after 30 months it becomes increasingly less likely to do so. Complications were persistent perforations (32.6%), tympanosclerosis (23.6%), repeated otorrhoea or tympanic membrane granulations (21%), and impacted wax (10.9%). Forty-eight percent of patients experienced one or more complication in the study period, and the complication rate increased d
