Selective vulnerability of neuronal populations occurs in both Down syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), resulting in disproportional degeneration of pyramidal neurons (PNs) affecting memory and executive function. Elucidating the cellular mechanisms underlying the selective vulnerability of these populations will provide pivotal insights for disease progression in DS and AD. Single population RNA-sequencing analysis was performed on neurons critical for executive function, prefrontal cortex Brodmann area 9 (BA9) layer III (L3) and layer V (L5) excitatory PNs in postmortem human DS and

Thirteen consecutive patients with entrapped temporal horn syndrome in the Department of Neurosurgery of Beijing Tiantan Hospital from February 2018 to September 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, and there were 5 males and 8 females, with a mean age of (43±21) years. Increased intracranial pressure caused by hydrocephalus was the main clinical symptom. All the patients underwent refined temporal-to-frontal horn shunt, and all the symptoms were improved after surgery. Postoperative Karnofsky performance score (KPS) [90 (90, 100)] was higher than preoperative KPS [57 (40, 70)] (P=0.001). Howev

Williams syndrome (WMS), a genetic condition resulting from a contiguous deletion on the long arm of chromosome 7, is associated with a relatively consistent profile of neurocognitive and neurobehavioral features. The distinctiveness and regularity of the profile of learning and behavioral characteristics in this genetic condition suggests that underlying neurobiological correlates may be identifiable. In this initial study, we report findings derived from a high-resolution neuroimaging study of 14 young adult subjects with WMS and an individually matched normal control group. Compared to cont

Frontal lobe dementia (FLD) is characterised clinically by personality changes and a progressive speech disorder finally leading to mutism. In the course of the disease also other neurological syndromes may occur such as parkinsonism, a partial Klüver-Bucy-syndrome or a degeneration of motoneurons (FLD + MND). The latter leads to death within about three years. The clinical diagnosis of FLD is supported by functional (SPECT) and morphological (CT, MRI) investigations. From 1988 to 1997, 9 cases of FLD (6 female, 3 male) were clinically diagnosed at our department of Gerontology, LNK Linz. In t

A 54-year-old woman with clinically diagnosed paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis secondary to adenocarcinoma of the lung is described. Neuropsychological evaluation revealed intact visual perception, visual construction, language, speeded processing, and verbal abstract reasoning in the presence of a severe anterograde amnesia for both verbal and visual information. A profound consolidation problem is discussed in view of other diseases of the mesial temporal lobes resulting in impaired consolidation of new material.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) can be associated with different underlying pathologies that are difficult to predict based on clinical presentation. The aim of this study was to determine whether patterns of atrophy on imaging could be useful to help predict underlying pathology in CBS.
METHODS: This was a case-control study of 24 patients with CBS who had undergone MRI during life and came to autopsy. Pathologic diagnoses included frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) with TDP-43 immunoreactivity in 5 (CBS-TDP), Alzheimer disease (AD) in 6 (CBS-AD), corticobasal degeneration in 7

OBJECTIVE: Down's syndrome is characterized by the genetically programmed accumulation of substantial Alzheimer's disease neuropathology after age 40 and the development of early dementia years later, providing a unique human model to investigate the preclinical phases of Alzheimer's disease. Older nondemented adults with Down's syndrome show normal rates of regional cerebral glucose metabolism at rest before the onset of dementia, indicating that their neurons maintain function at rest. The authors hypothesized that an audiovisual stimulation paradigm, acting as a stress test, would reveal ab

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are vulnerable to COVID-19, but whether alterations in ACE2, the viral receptor, and TMPRSS2, the spike-priming protease for SARS-CoV-2, differ between these disorders is unknown. We analyzed cleaved fragments and full-length species of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from non-infected individuals with DS (n = 9) without memory decline (nDS), DS with dementia (dDS; n = 10) and aged matched controls (n = 10). CSF levels were compared to levels in frozen postmortem frontal cortex in nDS (n = 4), dDS (n = 8) and 11

Orbitofrontal syndrome is a variant of frontal lobe syndrome in which behavioural disturbances are prevailing. It results from bilateral lesions of the orbitofrontal cortex and the medial face of frontal lobe. Patients present disorganized hyperactivity. They are distractable, impulsive, euphoric and unable to abide by social rules. They often have instinctive disinhibition (hypersexuality, hyperphagia and urinary behaviour disorders). In spite of severe behavioural disturbances cognitive functions are often intact so that orbitofrontal syndrome may be confounded with two psychiatric disorders

A patient with acute dementia underwent imaging of the brain with technetium-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime single-photon emission computed tomography. Regional perfusion abnormalities were identified in multiple locations, particularly in the left frontal lobe. This information was used to direct an open brain biopsy, which led to a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease.

Neuropsychological investigations of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) have shown impairments in such basic functions as memory, attention and executive control. Since executive functions are known to be dependent on the integrity of the frontal lobe, it was hypothesized that OSAS may be associated with hypoxaemic frontal lobe dysfunction. To test this hypothesis, 21 apnoeic patients and 10 normal controls were studied with quantitative electroencephalographic (EEG) methods during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when most apnoeic events occur and during wakefulness. In apn

A neurological complication occurs in 40-60% of HIV infected patients during the course of the disease. In 10-20% the neurological complication is the first manifestation of the HIV infection. A reliable neuropathological diagnosis is a prerequisite for a specifically selected treatment. While modern computer-assisted imaging techniques, such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, do possess a high sensitivity, they do not as a rule permit an unambiguous diagnosis. Between October 1989 and July 1994 we biopsied 38 HIV infected patients stereotactically. The indication for the bi

Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome is characterized by diplegia involving the face, the pharynx, the tongue and the masticatory muscles, with automatic-voluntary dissociation due to vascular damage of both operculi. The prognosis is usually good for life expectancy. The authors describe a 46-year-old man in whom one operculum was destroyed because of a birth trauma, the other one was injured by an ischemic infarct in the territory of the middle cerebral artery. The clinical correlations to the site of the lesions are discussed. They confirm the diagnostic value of CT scan in evaluating this syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hernia is a rare condition characterized by the protrusion of lung tissue through a chest wall defect. Trauma and thoracic surgery are the most common causes of acquired lung hernias. We present an unusual case of (sequential) bilateral lung herniation with parenchymal infarction after bilateral lobar lung transplantation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female, wait-listed as high-urgency candidate, with a body mass index (BMI) of 29 kg/m2 underwent a bilateral lobar lung transplantation for pulmonary fibrosis through a clamshell thoracotomy approach. Due to a size mis

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), previously described as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a rare autoimmune disease that causes necrotizing systemic vasculitis, affecting small- and medium-sized blood vessels. While adults typically receive GPA diagnoses more frequently, children and adolescents can also experience it, albeit infrequently. In pediatric patients, the disease presents challenges due to its rarity and complex clinical symptoms. Early detection and treatment are essential for minimizing long-term complications and improving outcomes. We conducted a literature review that includ

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The appearance and aggravation of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) have proven to be closely related to psychosocial factors. We aimed to measure altered spontaneous brain activity and functional connectivity (FC) in patients with IBS-D using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) and to analyze the relationship between these parameters and emotional symptoms.
METHODS: Thirty-six adult IBS-D patients and thirty-six demographic-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent RS-fMRI scans. After processing RS-fMRI data, the values of
