Changes in the milk composition of nonpuerperal women.

Studies were undertaken to determine the effect of expressing small volumes of breast fluid (less than 3.0 ml) on the progressive changes in concentrations of lactose, proteins, and electrolytes in the mammary secretions of four nonpuerperal women with galactorrhea and two nonpuerperal women who artificially induced lactation by breast hyperstimulation. The changes in the concentration of the milk constituents in the mammary secretion of these women are compared to the levels in colostrum, transitional and mature milk obtained from normal lactationg women. In one woman galactorrhea was associa…

Patterns of milk transmission of Strongyloides ratti.

Eight days after mother rats were injected with 4000 infective larvae of Strongyloides ratti at different stages of lactation the numbers of … ability of the neonatal gut as an environment for worm development. The timing of events leading to milk-borne infection is defined. Injected larvae were closely synchronized in their movements, which were completed in 36 h. Larvae experimentally diverted into the mother's tissues during her first lactation were not available for the infection of a sec …

Milk drinking by the elderly of three races.

The three objectives of this study were to determine: (a) If milk was acceptable for multi-racial groups of elderly people, some of whom had previously been described as lactose intolerant, (b) the frequency of milk rejection attributed to symptoms of lactose intolerance, and (c) the importance of offering different types of milk. The study was carried out on 347 elderly citizens participating in the Title VII Nutrition Program for the Elderly in Harris County, Texas. Eighty-five per cent of the Mexican-Americans, 93.5 per cent of the blacks, and 94 per cent of the Anglos surveyed reported dri…

The role of sensitizing proteins in milk allergy.

In clinical allergology and particularly during childhood, we quite frequently encounter patients who are allergic to milk. This has usually been confirmed by the clinical history and by skin testing. Statistics show a sensitization to cows' milk of between 0.3 and 7% of the world's population. In view of the diversity of opinions about an immunological problem of such clinical importance, we decided to carry out a clinical study to determine the sensitization to different fractions in patients allergic to milk. For this study, 82 patients were selected with a history of milk allergy together …

Growth and milk intake of normal infants.

The growth of 94 normal term infants was studied from birth to 6 months. 33 infants were breast fed and the others randomly allocated to one of 3 bottle feeds--Cow and Gate V formula, Baby Milk Plus, and Premium. The weight, length, and head growth velocities were similar in all 4 groups. The infants fed Cow and Gate V formula consumed a larger volume of feed at 3 months than the infants fed the 2 other formulae despite a slower weight gain. It is suggested that this is related to loss of calories in unabsorbed fat. The weight gains of all 4 groups in this study were considerably less than inf…

Fermented Milk as an Alternative Therapy for Obesity.

Obesity is a global health concern closely associated with metabolic disorders, including fatty liver disease. Conventional treatment approaches rely on lifestyle modifications and pharmacological interventions, but functional foods, particularly fermented milk, have gained attention as promising alternatives. Fermented milk containing probiotics has emerged as a potential functional food for managing obesity and its complications, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This review summarises current evidence on the role of probiotic-fermented milk in modulating lipid metabolism a…

The Multiple Facets of Cow's Milk Allergy.

Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is one of the most common food allergies in early childhood. CMA has varied presentations and multiple facets. A detailed clinical history is key for classification. In IgE-mediated CMA, skin prick testing and serum specific IgE testing are useful in the diagnosis, but an oral food challenge may still be necessary if there is doubt or to assess tolerance. Non-IgE-mediated CMA presentations include food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, and eosinophilic esophagitis. The diagnosis of food protein-induced allergic proctoc…

Composition of Breast Milk in Women with Obesity.

Background/Objectives: Among US breastfeeding women, those with obesity have significantly increased breast milk fat and caloric content from foremilk to hindmilk, with a 4-fold increase in fat content from the first to last milk sample. In view of different dietary norms and nutritional standards, we sought to evaluate the relationship between maternal BMI with breast milk fat and calorie content in women from Brazil, a low-middle-income country. Methods: Women who delivered singleton-term neonates were recruited from the Ana Abrao Breastfeeding Center (AABC) and Human Milk Bank at the Federa…

Maternal HIV infection and the milk microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Children born to women with HIV but who do not become HIV infected experience increased morbidity and mortality compared with children born to women without HIV. The basis of this increased vulnerability is unknown. The microbiome, specifically the infant gut microbiome, likely plays an important role in infant immune development. The human milk microbiome is thought to have an important role in the development of the infant gut and therefore, if perturbed, may contribute to this increased vulnerability. We investigated the effects of HIV and its therapies on the milk microbiome an…
