Association between Psychological Factors and Evacuation Status and the Incidence of Cardiovascular Diseases after the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Prospective Study of the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

Evidence regarding the effect of psychological factors and evacuation on cardiovascular disease occurrence after large-scale disasters is limited. This prospective study followed up a total of 37,810 Japanese men and women aged 30-89 years from the Fukushima Prefecture with no history of stroke or heart disease at baseline (2012), until 2017. This period included 3000 cardiovascular events recorded through questionnaires and death certificates. The participants' psychological distress, trauma reaction, and evacuation status were defined, and divided into four groups based on combinations of ps

Alteration of antral and proximal colonic motility induced by chronic psychological stress involves central urocortin 3 and vasopressin in rats.

Because of the difficulties in developing suitable animal models, the pathogenesis of stress-induced functional gastrointestinal disorders is not well known. Here we applied the communication box technique to induce psychological stress in rats and then examined their gastrointestinal motility. We measured upper and lower gastrointestinal motility induced by acute and chronic psychological stress and examined the mRNA expression of various neuropeptides in the hypothalamus. Chronic psychological stress disrupted the fasted motility in the antrum and accelerated motility in the proximal colon.

A thematic synthesis of qualitative studies and surveys of the psychological experience of painful endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a widespread problem in women of reproductive age, causing cyclical and non-cyclical pain in the pelvis and elsewhere, and associated with fatigue, fertility problems, and other symptoms. As a chronic pain problem, psychological variables are important in adjustment and quality of life, but have not been systematically studied. METHODS: A systematic search of multiple databases was conducted to obtain surveys and qualitative studies of women's experience of pain from endometriosis. Surveys were combined narratively; qualitative studies were combined by thematic sy

[Effects on the brain of effective psychological treatments for anxiety disorders: a systematic review].

INTRODUCTION: Psychological therapies can modify thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of people with mental disorders, but the underlying brain mechanisms remain to be clarified. Advances in neuroimaging techniques can help us to understand of how different psychotherapies change the human brain. This review has aimed to systematically investigate the brain effects of psychological therapies for adults with anxiety disorders. METHOD: Several electronic databases (Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE and EBSCO) up to April 2010 were searched. Abstracts which appeared to fulfill the initial selection criteri

Psychoneural reduction revised: The case of suicidality in bipolar disorder.

This paper uses suicidality in bipolar disorder (BD) to illustrate that multidimensional frameworks account for complex phenomena with cognitive, psychological, socioenvironmental and physiological components better than their reductionist counterparts. We challenge level-based reductionist models that regard a particular dimension as fundamental. To comprehensively understand complex psychiatric phenomena, multidimensional models that acknowledge the heterogeneity of aetiological factors, rather than homogenising them under a single dimension, must be utilised. Multidimensional models allow a

Advancing trauma studies: A narrative literature review embracing a holistic perspective and critiquing traditional models.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is commonly understood as a psychological and emotional response to distressing events. The subjective nature of trauma experiences has led to ongoing debates about the best theoretical frameworks for understanding and addressing trauma. This review aims to comprehensively critique traditional biomedical and psychological models and advocates for more inclusive and culturally sensitive frameworks. METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted, synthesizing data from 96 peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and authoritative reports from databases such as PubMed, Psy

A mathematical formalization of the replaced elements model.

In this work, I develop a mathematical formalization of the Replaced Elements Model (Wagner. Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology: Section B, 56(1), 7, 2003), within a general framework proposed by Ghirlanda (Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 64/65, 8-16, 2015, Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 85, 55-61, 2018), which provides a new way to apply and study the model. The result derived here has the novelty of explicitly stating how the model computes associative values without requiring either the application of complex algorithms or the use of special software. As a way of showing

History of military psychology.

Military psychology is a specialist discipline within applied psychology. It entails the application of psychological science to military operations, systems and personnel. The specialty was formally founded during World War I in the UK and the USA, and it was integral to many early concepts and interventions for psychological and neuropsychological trauma. It also established a fundamental basis for the psychological assessment and selection of military personnel. During and after World War II, military psychology continued to make significant contributions to aviation psychology, cognitive t

Optimal metacognitive decision strategies in signal detection theory.

Signal detection theory (SDT) has long provided the field of psychology with a simple but powerful model of how observers make decisions under uncertainty. SDT can distinguish sensitivity from response bias and characterize optimal decision strategies. Whereas classical SDT pertains to "type 1" judgments about the world, recent work has extended SDT to quantify sensitivity for metacognitive or "type 2" judgments about one's own type 1 processing, e.g. confidence ratings. Here we further advance the application of SDT to the study of metacognition by providing a formal account of normative meta

Life stress and major depression: The mysteries of recurrences.

Approximately half of the people who suffer a major depressive episode for the first time experience recurrences, while the other half do not. Among the initially depressed, however, who will have recurrences remains a mystery, and cannot be forecasted with any statistical or clinical confidence. It is well documented, though, that highly stressful life events commonly precede first episodes of major depression, and that these experiences become progressively less common prior to recurrences. Determining the basis for this consistent empirical observation holds promise for discovering among th

From dysfunction to adaptation: an interactionist model of dependency.

Contrary to clinical lore, a dependent personality style is associated with active as well as passive behavior and may be adaptive in certain contexts (e.g., in fostering compliance with medical and psychotherapeutic treatment regimens). The cognitive/interactionist model conceptualizes dependency-related responding in terms of four components: (a) motivational (a marked need for guidance, support, and approval from others); (b) cognitive (a perception of oneself as powerless and ineffectual); (c) affective (a tendency to become anxious when required to function autonomously); and (d) behavior

An exploration of acceptability of a collaboratively developed model of formulation.

Collaborative, recovery-oriented psychological interventions are in demand within mental health settings, but layers of barriers can impede their implementation, particularly within acute services. Psychological formulation is a recovery-oriented, collaborative process involving the development of a shared understanding of a service user's mental health difficulties. Psychological formulation has the potential to support a shift away from the embedded medical model; however, few, if any, frameworks have involved service users at the development stage. This study examines the acceptability of a

Trajectories of psychological distress and spinal pain in manual therapists during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden.

The aim of this study was to assess the one-year trajectories of psychological distress and of spinal pain intensity in manual therapists during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden, and to assess characteristics' association with trajectory membership. In this cohort study, 816 clinically active licensed manual therapists answered four web-based surveys during a year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden, measuring psychological distress and spinal pain intensity. Trajectory modelling was conducted to cluster individual trajectories over time. Association between baseline characteristics and cluster

Mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: exploring the role of psychological flexibility and stress-related variables.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and the psychological factors associated can help inform subsequent interventions to protect psychological health. In particular, psychological flexibility has been shown to be an important target for intervention. The current study aimed to investigate associations between protective factors (state mindfulness, values and self-compassion) and risk factors (COVID-19 stress, worry and rumination) for mental health during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: 439 participants completed three online survey

Modeling quality of life in patients with rheumatic diseases: the role of pain catastrophizing, fear-avoidance beliefs, physical disability, and depression.

PURPOSE: To examine factors in the fear-avoidance model, such as pain, pain catastrophizing, fear-avoidance beliefs, physical disability, and depression and their relationships with physical and psychological quality of life in patients with rheumatic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data were obtained from 360 patients with rheumatic diseases who completed self-report measures assessing study variables. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the hypothesized relationships among factors specified in the fear-avoidance model predicting physical and psychological quality of life.

Clinically speaking, psychological abuse matters.

BACKGROUND: The adverse effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) on mental health are well-established, except in the cases of psychological abuse and men's victimization. This research study examines the prevalence and the independent contribution of psychological IPV on mental health for both genders. METHODS: The initial sample comprises 661 college students from a Portuguese public university, who completed an e-survey. Statistical analysis focused on a subsample (n=364), 23% of which were men, after removing cases of physical and/or sexual abuse. RESULTS: A total of 75% of men and 72%

Asthma, atopy and serious psychological distress: prevalence and risk factors among young people in the Melbourne atopy cohort study.

Background: While atopic conditions are associated with increased risk of mental health problems, the evidence that a range of allergic conditions are associated with psychological distress in young people is less clear. Methods: We recruited a longitudinal birth cohort study of 620 children with a family history of allergic disease. At the 18-year follow up, atopic sensitization was determined by skin prick testing. Surveys were used to determine psychological distress (Kessler 6), quality of life (SF12), respiratory symptoms and management, presence of current eczema and hay fever. Regression
