Sulfite oxidizing enzymes (SOEs) are molybdenum cofactor-dependent enzymes that are found in plants, animals, and bacteria. Sulfite oxidase (SO) is found in animals and plants, while sulfite dehydrogenase (SDH) is found in bacteria. In animals, SO catalyzes the oxidation of toxic sulfite to sulfate as the final step in the catabolism of the sulfur-containing amino acids, methionine and cysteine. Sulfite oxidase is a mitochondrial enzyme encoded by the SUOX gene and essential for the detoxification of sulfite which results mainly from the catabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. Decreased activity of this enzyme can either be due to mutations in the SUOX gene or secondary to defects in the synthesis of its cofactor, the molybdenum cofactor. The clinical signs of camel sway disease in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province were defined. Reconstitution of purified demolybdosulfite oxidase from rat liver has been achieved using inorganic molybdate as the source of molybdenum. The activation process has a pH optimum of 7.4 and is dependent on concentrations of molybdate and demolybdoenzyme. A number of metals are mutagenic in bacteria or phage. These include compounds of arsenic, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, platinum, and selenium. Compounds containing alumium, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and tellium have been shown to induce chromosomal aberrations or abnormal cell divisions in animal or plant cells. In this report, we describe the synthesis and characterization of 1,3-bis(hexyloxy)propan-2-yl nitrate (NDHP), a novel organic mono nitrate. Using purified xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), chemiluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we found that XOR catalyzes nitric oxide (NO) generation from NDHP under anaerobic conditions, and that thiols are not involved or required in this process. Lesions of connective tissue in the media of the aorta, including ruptures, were produced with experimental copper deficiency in turkey poults. The copper and molybdenum contents in the livers of 12 turkeys that had succumbed to naturally occuring aortic ruptures were measured to determine if field cases of the disease are etiologically related to copper deficiency. Half of the livers contained less than 10 ppm copper, and the others contained 10--20 ppm copper. Molybdenum levels were less than 1 ppm.

The substitutional photolysis of K4[Mo(CN)8].2H2O in 98% N2H4.H2O has been investigated in detail. A molybdenum(II) intermediate, K5[Mo(CN)7].N2H4, is isolated in the primary stage of the reaction that involves the oxidation of N2H4 to N2, as evidenced by the analysis of evolving gases. Evidence for the influence of trace elements on disease resistance in ruminants is reviewed with emphasis on susceptibility to infection in vivo during the more common deficiencies (copper, selenium and cobalt). The contrast of an x-ray exposure is influenced by the x-ray absorption of the examined material and the x-ray frequency. The examination of the absorbing properties of bone material in the molybdenum spectrum by means of the Bragg-method revealed an intense increase of absorption in the long-wave range. By using a zirconium filter, long-wave and monochromatic MoK alpha-rays can be isolated from the spectrum of a molybdenum x-ray tube. The x-ray exposures of thin bone tissue produced in this spectral range show a much greater degree of contrast and depth as compared to conventional exposures.
