Recessively inherited multiple epiphyseal dysplasia with normal stature, club foot, and double layered patella caused by a DTDST mutation.

We have observed over 25 different mutations in the diastrophic dysplasia sulphate transporter gene (DTDST) in association with the recessive disorders achondrogenesis 1B, atelosteogenesis 2, and diastrophic dysplasia. The c862t (R279W) transition is the most common mutation in non-Finnish patients, but in these disorders it is usually combined with other DTDST mutations. We had not seen a case of homozygosity for c862t (R279W) until we analysed DNA from a 36 year old male with tall-normal stature (180 cm) who asked for genetic counselling for suspected multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. He was tr

Phenotypic abnormalities observed in aged cloned mice from embryonic stem cells after long-term maintenance.

Somatic/embryonic stem cell cloning has made it possible to produce an individual genomically identical to another individual. However, the cloned animals have a variety of abnormalities caused by the aberrant gene modification, with insufficient reprogramming in cloning. We previously reported abnormalities in cloned mice at birth. In this study, we examined what abnormalities could be seen in cloned mice after long-term maintenance. The aged cloned mice showed multiple abnormalities: increase of body weight, some phenotypic abnormalities in the kidneys, testes and thymus, and lower urea nitr

Successful pre-implantation genetic testing for autosomal recessive cutis laxa: clinical utility of a multidisciplinary team approach.

PURPOSE: Pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) enables couples at risk of transmitting serious genetic disorders to their offspring to give birth to healthy children. Here, we present an illustrative case of the use of PGT-M in a couple who were both carriers of autosomal recessive cutis laxa (ARCL) and describe the application of PGT-M in our reproductive center using a multidisciplinary team approach. METHODS: The couple experienced four adverse pregnancy outcomes, and both partners were subsequently identified as carriers of ARCL caused by PYCR1 gene variants dur

Association of gestational weight gain patterns with preterm birth subtypes in a population based cohort study from China.

This study examined the association between gestational weight gain (GWG) patterns and preterm birth (PTB) subtypes using data from a registry system in Wuhan, China. A total of 57,138 women with live singleton births were included. Total GWG in the first and second trimesters was categorized as insufficient, appropriate, or excessive based on Chinese guidelines, and weekly early GWG (< 20 weeks; eGWG) was classified into Class I (< 100 g/week), Class II (100-399 g/week), and Class III (≥ 400 g/week). Multiple logistic regression analyses assessed the relationships between GWG patterns and PTB

Marijuana Use for Women: To Prescribe or Not to Prescribe.

The marijuana policy varies greatly worldwide. Marijuana use is illegal in most countries. Nevertheless, the medical potentials of marijuana have been increasingly uncovered, and its use by women is increasing. Objectives: Herein we aimed to share some of our perspectives on the hot important topic: marijuana use for women. Methods: We reviewed publications indexed in PubMed reporting the benefits and harms regarding the medical use of marijuana for women and its impact on offspring. Results: For non-pregnant women with some long-lasting conditions refractory to regular management, marijuana c

Long-term endocrine outcome of small for gestational age infants born to mothers with and without gestational diabetes mellitus.

Small for gestational age (SGA) infants and infants born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at an increased risk for significant morbidity and mortality, mainly metabolic disorders. We aimed to question the long-term endocrine morbidity of SGA infants born to mothers with GDM compared to SGA infants born to non- diabetic mothers. A population-based cohort study was performed to assess the risk for endocrine morbidity among children born SGA to mothers with and without GDM. The main outcome evaluated was endocrine morbidity of the offspring up to the age of 18 years, predef

Association between maternal zinc status and the physical development of infants aged 0-12 months: a cohort study in Northeast China.

BACKGROUND: Zinc serves as an indispensable element for fetal growth and neonatal development. Presently, the evidence of the relationship between zinc during pregnancy and the physical development (length and weight) of offspring remains inconsistent. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between them. METHODS: This study recruited pregnant women who gave birth from January 2019 to August 2024. Zinc of these pregnant women in the third trimester pregnancy was tested by atomic absorption spectrometer. Telephone follow-up was carried out when babies were 6 and 12 months old usi

Gene-Temperature Interactions and Risk of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

BACKGROUND: High ambient temperature in early pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). To better understand biological mechanisms, the current study evaluated potential interaction between temperature and genetic characteristics. METHODS: We used data from California birth records (1982-2008) and California Cancer Registry (1988-2011) to identify ALL cases (n=3,353) diagnosed ≤14 years of age and non-cancer controls (n=3,530) matched 1:1 on sex, race, ethnicity, and birth year and month. Weekly ambient temperatures throughout pregnancy we

Bridging Differences in Cohort Analyses of the Relationship between Secondhand Smoke Exposure during Pregnancy and Birth Weight: The Transportability Framework in the ECHO Program.

BACKGROUND: Estimates for the effects of environmental exposures on health outcomes, including secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, often present considerable variability across studies. Knowledge of the reasons behind these differences can aid our understanding of effects in specific populations as well as inform practices of combining data from multiple studies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the presence of effect modification by measured sociodemographic characteristics on the effect of SHS exposure during pregnancy on birth weights that may drive differences observed across cohorts.

Expectant management versus multifetal pregnancy reduction in dichorionic triamniotic (DCTA) triplets: Single centre experience.

OBJECTIVES: In trichorionic triplet pregnancies, multifetal pregnancy reduction (MFPR) reduces the risk of preterm birth, neonatal morbidity and mortality without increasing miscarriage. A similar benefit has been suggested in dichorionic triamniotic (DCTA) pregnancy, but multiple methods are currently used. This study investigates if the method of reduction used in DCTA triplet pregnancy influences the evidence of benefit from MFPR. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of DCTA pregnancies between 2010 and 2019 who attended a single UK fetal medicine tertiary referral center. Cohorts

Exposure to preeclampsia in utero affects growth from birth to late childhood dependent on child's sex and severity of exposure: Follow-up of a nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: An adverse intrauterine environment may affect offspring growth and development. Our aim was to explore whether preeclampsia (PE) exposure in utero influences growth from birth to 13 years. METHODS: In a nested case-control study, 229 children were exposed to PE (mild/moderate: n = 164, severe: n = 54) and 385 were unexposed. Length/height and weight were abstracted from records at birth, 3 and 6 months, 1 and 4 years, and measured along with waist circumference and skinfolds at follow-up at 11/12 (girls/boys) and 13 years (both sexes). Associations between PE and z-

Determinants of bronchial responsiveness at school age in prematurely born children.

The bronchial challenge test using isocapnic hyperventilation of cold air (IHCA) was used to evaluate bronchial responsiveness in 63 offspring of multiple pregnancies when they were 8-15 years old. At birth, 27 (43%) children had had intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR, birth weight <-2 SD, or birth weight difference between twin pairs >1.3 SD). The median birth weight was 2,050 g (range, 800-3, 150), and the median gestational age was 35 weeks (range, 28-38). None of the children had asthma or suffered from asthma-like symptoms. In the interpretation of the IHCA test, a fall of 9% or more i

Metabolic functions of prolactin: Physiological and pathological aspects.

Prolactin is named after its vital role of promoting milk production during lactation, although it has been implicated in multiple functions within the body, including metabolism and energy homeostasis. Prolactin has been hypothesised to play a key role in driving many of the adaptations of the maternal body to allow the mother to meet the physiological demands of both pregnancy and lactation, including the high energetic demands of the growing foetus followed by milk production to support the offspring after birth. Prolactin receptors are found in many tissues involved in metabolism and food
