A 6-year-old girl presented with rhabdomyolysis following a febrile illness. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Influenza B and enterovirus was positive. Her serum creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin levels were very high. She developed myoglobinuria with oliguria leading to acute kidney injury. Continuous renal replacement therapy along with Cytosorb filter resulted in good outcome.

We report the clinical and histological findings in patients with acute renal failure caused by the ingestion of wildfowl who had eaten hemlock buds. Neurotoxic effects were accompanied by rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria, and acute tubular necrosis. Histological studies showed diffuse degeneration of the tubular epithelium. Immunohistological studies demonstrated the presence of myoglobin and actin in renal tubular cells.

Myoglobinuria and acute renal failure were observed in two patients with vasopressin-treated gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Because there were no other obvious causes of renal failure in either patient, we propose that skeletal muscle ischemia developed during vasopressin infusion, followed by release of myoglobin and renal damage. This association should be considered in the period after vasopressin-treated gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Myoglobinuria has a variety of causes, ranging from trauma to heavy exercise. Symptoms usually consist of myalgia and muscle weakness; dark, bloody-looking urine may be noted. Myoglobin can be identified by readily available laboratory techniques. Acute renal failure can be a dangerous consequence of myoglobinuria but, with rapid recognition and strict monitoring, the prognosis in most cases is good.

We report an autopsy case of a man who died 2 days after taking an overdose of vegetamin. The autopsy findings were as follows: the epidermis on the axillary fossa and the inguinal skin had become macerated. Skeletal muscle was discolored. A 57-year-old man with lung tumor was scheduled for right middle lobectomy under general anesthesia. The patient received glycerin enema 2 hours before anesthesia. It has been shown that certain patients with cirrhosis have asymptomatic cardiac abnormalities that have not yet been explained. Severe potassium deficiency is an uncommon cause of rhabdomyolysis. We recently treated a 45-year-old patient with myalgia, serious generalized weakness, increased serum creatine kinase and myoglobin level as well as excessive hypokalemia. Histological examination of deltoid muscle biopsy showed rhabdomyolysis. After complete recovery of muscle damage by potassium substitution Bartter's syndrome proved to be the cause of initial and persistent hypokalemia.
