Role of the hypoglossal nerve in equine nasopharyngeal stability.

The equine upper airway is highly adapted to provide the extremely high oxygen demand associated with strenuous aerobic exercise in this species. The tongue musculature, innervated by the hypoglossal nerve, plays an important role in airway stability in humans who also have a highly adapted upper airway to allow speech. The role of the hypoglossal nerve in stabilizing the equine upper airway has not been established. Isolated tongues from eight mature horses were dissected to determine the distal anatomy and branching of the equine hypoglossal nerve. Using this information, a peripheral nerve

Pre-malignant nasopharyngeal epithelial cell models.

Experimental models that allow investigation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) progression could provide valuable insights of the molecular mechanism of nasopharyngeal carcinogenesis as well as potential clinical intervention. Because Epstein-Barr virus only infects humans and a few species of monkeys, representative NPC animal models have not been available so far. Attempts to provide cell models for early nasopharyngeal carcinogenesis have involved in the studies of in vitro transformation of normal finite lifespan human nasopharyngeal epithelial cells (NPEC) to immortality. The first two imm

Middle turbinectomy as a complication of nasopharyngeal airway placement.

A nasopharyngeal airway is an adjunct used to relieve airway obstruction due to tongue relaxation in an unconscious or semiconscious patient. It is considered a safe procedure in patients without massive facial trauma or basilar skull fracture. This is a report of a healthy patient undergoing procedural sedation who sustained a middle turbinectomy upon placement of a nasal trumpet to assist ventilation. He subsequently developed severe epistaxis that resolved only after multiple attempts of packing both by the emergency physician as well as the otolaryngology service. It is to be hoped that th

[Late neurotoxicity after nasopharyngeal carcinoma treatment].

PURPOSE: A retrospective analysis of risk factors for late neurological toxicity after nasopharyngeal carcinoma radiotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1993 and 2004, 239 patients with non metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by radiotherapy associated or not to chemotherapy. Radiotherapy was delivered with two modalities: hyperfractionated for 82 patients and conventional fractionation for 157 patients. We evaluated the impact of tumour stage, age, gender, radiotherapy schedule and chemotherapy on neurological toxicity. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up of 107 months (35-176 m

[Discussion on security of fiber nasopharyngeal laryngoscope for children].

OBJECTIVE: To study the factors of complications and the incidence rates after the examination of fiber nasopharyngeal laryngoscope. METHOD: To observe the complications appeared within 24 hours during and after fiber nasopharyngeal laryngoscope examination for 5000 children. RESULT: Of 5000 cases, 305 cases (6.10%) occurred transient complications during and after the operation. The incidence of complications in different age groups (0-1, >1-3, >3-7, >7-16) were 9.83%, 6.14%, 3.15%, 1.69% respectively. It was significantly lower in older age groups compared with younger ones. The commonest

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: the role of the Epstein-Barr virus.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) arises from the epithelium of the nasopharynx and is a rare tumor in most parts of the world, including the United States. Neck swelling, nasal obstruction, and epistaxis are the most common presenting symptoms. The etiology of NPC is multifactorial and includes genetic susceptibility, exposure to carcinogens, and prior infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). We report a case of a 16-year-old African-American male who presented with hemoptysis and a 3-month history of a neck mass. Diagnostic evaluation identified a nasopharyngeal mass that upon biopsy was sh

Breast metastases from undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The most common primary tumours metastasising to the breast include melanoma, lymphoma, lung cancer and ovarian cancer, while metastases from head and neck cancer are rare. Metastases from undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma cancers are extremely rare, and only 3 well-documented cases have been reported in the English literature. We report a fourth case of breast metastases from nasopharyngeal carcinoma confirmed by in situ hybridization, focusing on clinical data as well as radiologic and pathologic features.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: molecular biomarker discovery and progress.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy in most part of the world and it is one of the most confusing, commonly misdiagnosed and poorly understood diseases. The cancer is an Epstein-Barr virus-associated malignancy with a remarkable racial and geographical distribution. It is highly prevalent in southern Asia where the disease occurs at a prevalence about a 100-fold higher compared with other populations not at risk. The etiology of NPC is thought to be associated with a complex interaction of genetic, viral, environmental and dietary factors. Thanks to the advancements in genomics

A rare case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in an elderly female.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas occur predominantly in males in their puberty and adolescence; the incidence in other age groups and in women is exceptional. This report describes a case of a 57-year-old woman with nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presenting typical radiological findings in computed tomography, MR imaging and angiography. The tumour was successfully removed and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. In 6 years follow-up the patient is free of symptoms.

Nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Gambian villagers.

BACKGROUND: To prepare for the introduction of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine of restricted valency, we studied the nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Gambian villagers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 21 villages after a census. We recorded demographic characteristics, information on medical history, and data on possible risk factors for carriage from subjects. We collected a nasopharyngeal swab specimen from each subject for isolation and serotyping of S. pneumoniae and for antibiotic susceptibility testing. RESULTS: The prevalence of S. pneumoniae

[Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: stage and surgical approach].

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNAs) are benign tumors that occasionally invade the pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, or middle cranial fossa. Several surgical approaches have been used based on the location of the tumor, including transpalatal, transmaxillary, and lateral rhinotomy, midfacial degloving, and Le Fort type I osteotomy. We reviewed 4 cases of JNA that had been treated by resection in the Department of Otolaryngology of Kagoshima City Hospital and 31 cases of JNA reported in the Japanese literature between 1990 and 2003. We analyzed the outcome of the surgical tr

A rare complication of embolization in juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is one of the most common benign nasal cavity tumors of adolescence. It exhibits a strong tendency to bleed and despite being microscopically benign, its behavior is locally aggressive. Preoperative embolization is helpful to minimize intraoperative bleeding. However, embolization procedure may have some important thromboembolic complications such as central retinal artery occlusion. In this article, a young male with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, who lost his vision in the left eye following embolization was presented and the possible therape

Clinical presentation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Sarawak Malaysia.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common cancer in Malaysia. The clinical presentation in Sarawak has not been well documented. A retrospective review of 213 selected NPC cases was undertaken on the clinical records in Sarawak General Hospital, Sarawak, from June 1999 to June 2003. There were 116 patients in Kuching and 97 in Serian. There were twice as many males as females. The youngest patient was 16 and the oldest 88 years old with a mean age of 51 years. The four most common symptoms in order of frequencies were cervical lymphadenopathy, epistaxis, hearing loss and diplopia. 80.8% of th

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis: a case report presenting with diplopia.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a common infectious disease worldwide. It can affect many organs, the most common is lungs infection. Upper respiratory tract involvement is uncommon and the least common regional involvement is nasopharyngeal region. The authors report a case of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis who came with diplopia which is a very rare presentation. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare condition that is found in only reported cases in the literature. In Thailand, the present case is the second case of this condition with diplopia. Nasopharyngeal examination reveal mass or ulceration. The di

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: recognizing the radiographic features in children.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Children often present with enlargement of the nasopharyngeal soft tissues, which is usually due to benign hypertrophy of adenoids. The objective of this report is to emphasize that, although rare, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) does occur in children and can be diagnosed reliably when certain key radiographic features are recognized. METHODS: The presenting scans of 11 patients with biopsy proven NPC were reviewed retrospectively by a CAQ-certified neuroradiologist. The age range was 12-17 years (median 15 years). Fifteen scans were reviewed, including 8 CT scans of t

Aberrant methylation of RASSF4/AD037 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Ras-association domain family of proteins (RASSF) is characterized by the Ras-association (RA) domain at the C-terminal. Frequent inactivation of RASSF1A gene in human cancers suggests that other members of the family may also play an important role in tumorigenesis. By in silico gene searches, the number of RASSF family members is increasing. Two new members of RASSF family, RASSF4/AD037 and NORE1, were recently identified. While the status of RASSF4/AD037 is poorly understood, methylation of NORE1A was reported to be common in human cancers. In this study, we aimed to investigate the express

Transoral endoscopic resection of a nasopharyngeal hairy polyp.

Hairy polyps are rare congenital benign tumors that usually present a pedunculated mass in the oronasopharynx. A hairy polyp originating from the left eustachian tube orifice was found in a 7-month-old girl presenting sleep apnea and blood-tinged vomiting. This was successfully removed by transoral surgery under endoscopic visualization. The endoscope-guided surgery may help avoid undesirable complications as well as completely excise the lesions attached close to the eustachian tube openings.
