Effects of Virtual Nature Embodiment on Compassion, Empathy, Nature Connectedness, and Symptom Burden in Patients With Psychosis or Depression: An Explorative Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Nature experiences may have a positive impact on mental health. Innovative alternatives, such as immersive virtual reality (iVR), can have similar effects. In previous studies on embodying a tree in virtual reality, connectedness to nature has been induced in healthy participants and shown to be influenced by compassion. Compassion and empathy, however, can be altered in psychiatric disorders, leading to impaired relationships with fellow human beings. The potential effect of nature experiences in iVR on compassion, empathy, and nature connectedness in mental health disorders has n…

The experiences and perspectives of participating in a nature integrative rehabilitation programme when suffering from post-concussion syndrome: responses, gains, and impact from using enriched nature environments as a rehabilitation setting and integrating nature as rehabilitation means.

PURPOSE: This study aims to understand the perspectives of individuals participating in a nature integrative rehabilitation (NIR) programme for post-concussion syndrome (PCS) in Denmark. The focus is on benefits, challenges, and impact of using enriched natural environments in rehabilitation. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 23 participants who completed a 10-week NIR programme in a therapy garden. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify key themes and patterns in participants' experiences. RESULTS: Participants reported enhanced emo…

Perceiving Natural Speed in Natural Movies.

The visual system uses the physical laws of nature as constraints for perceiving objects and events. Images violating natural laws would therefore tend to be perceived as unnatural. To understand vision's implicit knowledge of natural speed in the real world, we examined visual tolerance to artificial speed deviations in 22 natural movies. For most movies, perception could tolerate deviations from original speed by as much as a factor 2×. However, for movies including human body movements or falling objects, perception only tolerated a significantly narrower range of speed deviations. In gener…

Nature lifts when feeling low: Daily high and low awe nature clips decrease repetitive negative thinking and dampening and increase subjective happiness in adults.

Exposure to nature can enhance mental well-being, making nature-based interventions promising for the treatment and prevention of mental health problems like depression. Given the decreased self-focus and sense of self-diminishment associated with awe, the present study investigated the impact of exposure to awe-evoking nature on two key risk and maintenance factors of depression-repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and dampening of positive feelings-and on subjective happiness. In a randomized controlled trial, we tested the effects of exposure to awe-evoking nature clips through a 1-week inter…
