Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are widespread DNA viruses that can infect epithelial cells of the skin and mucosa. Most HPV infections remain clinically unapparent and clear spontaneously. In few cases, however, HPV infections persist and can cause benign and malignant neoplasms at different anatomic locations. Malignant HPV-induced neoplasms are caused by distinct types of HPV (oncogenic or high-risk (HR) HPV types) and present in the anogenital (anus, penis, uterine cervix, vagina and vulva) and head and neck (particularly oropharynx) region. In the anogenital region defined precancerous stage

Lobular carcinoma in situ is an uncommon noninvasive breast neoplasm; it accounts for about 0.8-3.8% of breast cancers and presents 3 peculiar characteristics: multicentricity (60-90%), bilaterality (35-59%), and the risk of invasive cancer (17-37%). The latter feature led some authors to consider this lesion as a marker of the development of an invasive cancer rather than a real malignant neoplasm. The main problem after histologic diagnosis is the choice of treatment: follow-up or surgery? Some authors reported, in the patients with lobular carcinoma in situ, the same incidence of ipsilatera

Fifty-seven thymomas, defined as neoplasms of the epithelial-reticular framework cells of the thymus, were assessed in respect to histologic type, inclusive of there ultrastructural aspects. The median age of the 57 patients was 40.4 years, with a range of 2 1/2--72 years. All neoplasms were located in the anterior mediastinum. The tumours in 40 cases were encapsulated and without invasion of adjacent tissue or implants (equal to non-invasive thymomas). The tumors in 17 cases were invasive of adjacent tissue, particularly mediastinal pleura, pericard and trachea. Six of 57 patients (equal to 1

BACKGROUND: To identify the preoperative factors predicting resectability in periampullary neoplasms.
METHODS: Twenty-three different parameters representing the clinical, laboratory and radiological data of 65 patients, who were operated for periampullary neoplasms, were analyzed to determine their value in assessing neoplasm resectability. Coefficients were calculated by Cox regression analysis for significant factors. A scoring system was designed for resectability. All patients were divided into 4 groups according to their scores.
RESULTS: Twenty-six patients who had a resectable neoplas

Oxyntic gland adenomas (OGAs) are benign gastric neoplasms composed of gland-forming epithelial cells with predominantly chief cell differentiation resembling oxyntic glands confined to the mucosa. If the tumor has submucosal invasion, it should be classified as gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic gland type. The OGAs can pose a diagnostic challenge, as they can resemble aggressive gastric neoplasms. There are no current guidelines on the management of OGA. Due to the relatively small size and low malignant potential, these lesions are typically managed endoscopically. In this case, we are report

Here, we report a case of mediastinal mesenchymal tumor with a pericytic neoplasm feature that responded to radiation therapy. A 43-year-old man visited our hospital with a complaint of esophageal obstruction and chest pain. Chest computed tomography revealed a middle mediastinal tumor and a mesenchymal tumor was diagnosed with a pericytic neoplasm feature by video-assisted thoracoscopic biopsy. The definitive treatment for soft tissue tumor is surgical resection; however, the mediastinal tumor was unresectable because of esophageal and tracheal invasion. Radiation therapy was administered and

Bronchogenic cysts are commonly located in the middle mediastinal compartment as fluid-filled cysts and thymoma is one of the most common neoplasms in the anterior mediastinum in adult cases. For two cases of asymptomatic, incidentally discovered anterior mediastinal soft tissue mass in adults, we planned to perform complete thymectomy with minimally invasive techniques based on the guidelines of International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group. Their pathological finding revealed cystic lesions lined by ciliated epithelium and this supported the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst rather than thymic

Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the male breast represents an extremely rare entity that accounts for less than 1% of all malignancies, and histologically may range from papillary hyperplasia in gynecomastia to invasive papillary carcinoma. This report presents the case of a 61-year-old Caucasian man who presented with a 5-year history of a centrally located painless swelling of his right breast with occasional nipple discharge. Triple assessment was very helpful in establishing the diagnosis. Treatment included a mastectomy and hormonal therapy because the neoplasm expressed hormone recept

Intraluminal pathologic conditions of the bile ducts and gallbladder are common, most frequently consisting of calculi and adenocarcinoma. In recent years, intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile ducts (IPN-B), which is analogous to intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas, has been recognized as a distinct pathologic entity and a precursor lesion to adenocarcinoma of the bile ducts. Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN) of the bile duct was subsequently described as a distinct pathologic entity. With increased awareness and advances in imaging techniques, these lesions

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms are a well-recognized pathologic entity of the pancreas that is being reported with increasing frequency. These tumours carry a relatively favourable prognosis and are frequently associated with extrapancreatic malignancies. The combination of advanced age and co-existence of two neoplasms challenges the planning of the best treatment option. A 78-year-old man presented with rectal bleeding which led to the diagnosis of a stenosing adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. No metastatic lesions were present but a 30 mm intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm

Verrucous carcinoma of bilharzial bladder, a rare neoplasm, is regarded as a distinct variant of squamous cell carcinoma. We studied 37 cases treated with cystectomy in the past 15 years. Despite previous reports of no local invasion and no local recurrence or distant metastasis postoperatively, we observed 60% of focal tumour transformation into invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Such transformation and dedifferentiation to squamous cell carcinoma can be expected in a high proportion of these tumours. The survival rate in the invasive cases was approximately the same as in squamous cell carcin

Myoepitheliomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms of the salivary glands. Minor salivary gland neoplasms most frequently occur in the palate (hard palate), followed by the lips, oral mucosa, and tongue/floor of the mouth. Additionally, less prevalent locations encompass the retromolar area, pharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and larynx. The lack of distinctive cytologic features and bland morphology in both benign and malignant myoepitheliomas necessitates the use of histopathology and immunohistochemistry for accurate diagnosis. Hence, here, we report a series of three cases, including tw

INTRODUCTION: Tracheal neoplasms account for less than 0.1% of all malignancies. The majority of tracheal malignancies are secondary neoplasms from direct tracheal invasion from adjacent structures and less commonly from hematogenous or lymphatic spread from distal malignancies. Evidence-based guidelines for management are lacking. Less invasive bronchoscopic ablation modalities are an option for non-operable patients. We report a case of endotracheal oligometastatic adenocarcinoma successfully treated with photodynamic therapy.
CASE: A 59-year-old man with past medical history of stage 1 rig

An adult, gravid, female pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) presented for facial swelling centered on the left mandible that was approximately 5 cm wide. Differential diagnoses included infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic origins. Definitive antemortem diagnosis was not possible, and the macaque's condition worsened despite supportive care. Necropsy findings included a mandibular mass that was locally invasive and expansile, encompassing approximately 80% of the left mandibular bone. The mass replaced portions of the soft palate, hard palate, sinuses, ear canal, and the caudal-rostral

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition is an important component of tumor progression, due to which the cells of malignant neoplasms acquire invasive and migratory properties. Analysis of the literature and our own data show that the activation of proteins involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition crucially affects the progression of endometrioid carcinoma of the endometrium and the significant variability of their expression could determine the clinical and morphological heterogeneity of this cancer. The most aggressive endometrioid carcinomas of the endometrium are characterized by a hybrid e

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare, aggressive, poorly understood malignancy that usually occurs in the salivary glands. CXPA has been reported to account for 3.6% of all salivary neoplasms and 11.7% of salivary malignancies. CXPA not only has a low incidence rate but there are few papers or case reports reporting perineural invasion rates. We report a case of CXPA which occurred in the parotid gland, showing retrograde perineural invasion along the facial nerve back to the internal auditory canal (IAC).

Understanding the timing and spectrum of genetic alterations that contribute to the development of pancreatic cancer is essential for effective interventions and treatments. The aim of this study was to characterize somatic ATM alterations in noninvasive pancreatic precursor lesions and invasive pancreatic adenocarcinomas from patients with and without pathogenic germline ATM variants. DNA was isolated and sequenced from the invasive pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas and precursor lesions of patients with a pathogenic germline ATM variant. Tumor and precursor lesions from these patients as wel
