Primary malignant melanoma of the oesophagus is a rare disease, only 262 cases being reported up to June 2005. In general, the prognosis is dismal because of its tendency to present as an advanced neoplasm with aggressive biological behaviour. (18)FDG-PET-scan is a useful tool for evaluation of metastatic disease and locoregional lymph node metastasis. We present herein a case of a young adult with primary malignant melanoma of the oesophagus, followed by a literature review on the subject.

Presentation with synchronous salivary gland tumors is rare, with the most typical combination being Warthin's tumor and pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. Involvement of minor salivary glands in such occurrences is extremely uncommon. We report a case of simultaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue and pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland in a 40-year-old woman. The submandibular mass was initially considered to represent regional lymph node tumor metastasis but later was shown to be an intraglandular primary neoplasm.

We describe a case of a lingual tonsillar metastasis as the first manifestation of a bronchial adenocarcinoma. Tonsillar metastases infrequently become manifest before the diagnosis of the primary neoplasm. A review of the literature disclosed 89 cases of carcinoma metastasizing to the palatine tonsil, but no one has reported the involvement of the lingual tonsil. Our patient is the first described case of bronchogenic carcinoma with this unusual form of presentation and furthermore is also the first carcinoma metastasizing to the lingual tonsil.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate intraoperative factors predicting appendiceal pathology during gynecologic oncology surgery for suspected mucinous ovarian neoplasms.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on 225 patients with mucinous ovarian neoplasms who underwent surgery for an adnexal mass with concurrent appendectomy between 2000 and 2018. Regression analyses were used to evaluate intraoperative factors, such as frozen section of the ovarian mass and surgeon's impression of the appendix in predicting appendiceal pathology.
RESULTS: Most patients (77.8%) had a normal appendix on final pathol

The computed tomographic (CT) findings are reviewed in 7 patients with metastatic ovarian tumors from gastrointestinal tract neoplasms (Krukenberg tumors). All patients presented mixed ovarian masses. In 6 cases the masses were mainly cystic, with internal septa and focal or uniform enlargement of the cyst wall. In the seventh patient the ovarian mass appeared on the CT as mainly solid. The size of the neoplasm varied between 5 and 46 cm. Ascites was only seen in 1 case and in another the existence of a primary tumor in the sigmoid colon was demonstrated. In our cases the CT signs of ovarian m

This review is based on a presentation given at the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society companion meeting at the 2019 United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology Annual Meeting. It presents updates on the diagnosis and classification of neuroendocrine neoplasms, with an emphasis on the role of immunohistochemistry. Neuroendocrine neoplasms often present in liver biopsies as metastases of occult origin. Specific topics covered include 1. general features of neuroendocrine neoplasms, 2. general neuroendocrine marker immunohistochemistry, with discussion of the emerging marker INSM1, 3. non-s

Clear cell mesothelioma is an extremely rare neoplasm of the pleura, which can easily be mistaken for a metastasis of clear cell carcinoma to the pleura. We report here the histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural aspects of a new case of clear cell pleural mesothelioma in a 52-year-old man with no known asbestos exposure. He was admitted to the hospital for recurrent pleural effusion, which was negative for neoplastic cells at the cytologic examination. A partial decortication of the right pleura was performed. The morphologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features

Seventeen neuroendocrine neoplasms of the larynx were examined for DNA ploidy. Twelve tumours were atypical carcinoids, four paragangliomas and one a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Seven atypical carcinoids were aneuploid, one diploid and one tetraploid, with metastasis being aneuploid. In three cases only skin metastases were available for study, which were aneuploid. The small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma was aneuploid. Two of the paragangliomas were aneuploid and two diploid. Like other sites, neuroendocrine neoplasms of the larynx have a high rate of aneuploidy. Determination of DNA

Malignant basaloid neoplasms of the skin are frequent, and their accurate diagnosis holds paramount importance for treatment and prognosis. However, these neoplasms can present diagnostic challenges because of their extensive differential diagnosis, which encompasses cutaneous metastasis among many other possibilities. We present a case of a 74-year-old man with a history of p16-positive palatine tonsil squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) treated with surgery and adjuvant radiation with no prior evidence of recurrence who presented to the dermatologist with 2 chin papules. The initial histopathologi

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) comprise a wide-ranging group of abnormal neoplasms with atypical presentations, from primary localized disease to extensive metastasis, reaching the bone and brain. The NENs are divided into two major groups: neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), which are well-differentiated tumors of any grade, and neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs), which are poorly differentiated, high-grade cancers with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. The challenge of diagnosing NENs early, particularly prior to metastasis, highlights the importance of further studying these dise

Between 1964 and 1986, 19 patients underwent resection of both a primary lung cancer and the associated brain metastasis. One patient underwent resection of 2 separate primary lung cancers and the associated metastases. The 12 men and 7 women ranged in age from 42 to 67 years (mean, 54.6 years). The cell type was adenocarcinoma in 12 tumors, squamous or adenosquamous cell in 5, large cell undifferentiated or anaplastic in 2, and malignant carcinoid in 1 tumor. The types of resection were as follows: lobectomy for 12 neoplasms, pneumonectomy for 5, bilobectomy for 2, and wedge resection for 1 n

Trichoblastic carcinoma (TBC) is a rare adnexal neoplasm of follicular germ cell differentiation with the potential for local invasion and metastasis. Histologic features of trichoblastic carcinoma have significant overlap with trichoblastoma and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), making diagnosis difficult in some cases. Treatment strategies are not well defined and include surgical excision for localized tumors and systemic therapies for metastatic disease. We present a case of trichoblastic carcinoma clinically resembling a benign cyst that was ultimately treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MM

A 70-year-old man with cerebellar syndromes was clinically diagnosed as paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration and underwent whole-body F-FDG PET/CT imaging for screening primary tumor. Intensely elevated tracer uptake in both cerebellar hemispheres was revealed, whereas no abnormality was found in MRI. Increased tracer uptake and swelling of the left tonsil and a cervical lymph node were found at the same time, suggesting neoplasm in tonsil with lymph node metastasis. Pathological examination demonstrated lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the left tonsil.

We present the case of a 56-year-old man who developed a neoplasm of epithelioid histology in his anophthalmic left orbit 21 years after he underwent enucleation for a spindle cell iris melanoma. The recurrent tumour was managed by orbital exenteration. Neither further recurrence nor metastasis was diagnosed over a 5-year follow-up period. This case, along with five other similar cases in the literature,1-3 emphasises the importance of long-term follow-up after treatment of iris melanoma.

Extracranial metastasis arising from primary intracranial malignant tumours are rare. Cases documented have arisen from tumours arising from glial cells or from undifferentiated neurons. Extracranial deposits from intracranial malignant nerve sheath tumours have not been documented. This case report shows histological similarity - rhabdomyoblastic differentiation in a malignant neoplasm in the clavicle similar to that seen in a malignant trigeminal schwannoma operated earlier. Detailed immunohistochemistry confirmed similarity in histogenesis confirming that the clavicular deposit was a second

Female adnexal tumor of probable wolffian origin is a rare neoplasm that can present diagnostic difficulties. We report herein a case of a 60-year-old woman with female adnexal tumor of probable wolffian origin arising within the leaves of a broad ligament and, 5 years later, presenting with metastasis to the liver. The morphologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and DNA ploidy findings of the original and metastatic tumor, differential diagnoses, and the results of the English-language literature review are presented.

We describe a case of a Merkel cell tumor of the eyelid that manifested as a recurrent chalazion. This tumor had the classic characteristics of a Merkel cell neoplasm by light microscopy. Electron microscopy showed dense-core neurosecretory granules and perinuclear microfilaments consistent with the diagnosis. Because a Merkel cell tumor may manifest as a chalazion, pathologic evaluation of all atypical chalazia is essential. Merkel cell tumors are malignant, and they must be treated aggressively to minimize recurrence or metastasis.

An ossifying fibromyxoid tumor is a soft tissue neoplasm with ambiguous differentiation and low metastatic potential. Most cases involve the lower extremities, followed by the trunk, the upper extremities, and the head and neck region. It mainly arises in 40-70 years of age, and men dominate the disease's gender distribution. In the described types of ossifying fibromyxoid tumors, there are three variants: one is benign (typical), the second is malignant, which carries the risk of disease recurrence or metastases, and the third is atypical, which does not meet the criteria of either typical or

BACKGROUND: Primary liver cancer is a highly aggressive neoplasm with high incidence and mortality. Due to the high ability to metastasis, the 5-year survival rate of patients with primary liver cancer is poor.
AIM: To investigate the clinical value of systemic immunoinflammatory index (SII) in predicting recurrence and metastasis after interventional therapy in patients with primary liver cancer.
METHODS: Total 186 patients with primary liver cancer were included and underwent Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), and followed up for 3 years. Then, patients were divided into 110
